‘Survival Of The Thickest’ Season 2: Is It Renewed Or Canceled? What’s Next For Mavis?

Michelle Buteau’s new TV series, adapted from her books of essays, is a refreshing take on our run-of-the-mill rom-com. The show is energetic and diverse—exactly the kind of thing Netflix needs to make more of! It is unfortunate that we got only eight short episodes of this easy-breezy binge-watch, so it would be so fantastic to see a second season real soon. Netflix hasn’t renewed the hot new show just yet, but we can imagine, with the majorly positive response it’s received, we’re likely to get a second season sooner than later. We’re so tired of seeing the same beauty standards and non-diverse media that we should definitely be encouraging such shows to be brought to the limelight and renewed. If you haven’t seen the show yet and just stumbled upon this article, check out our full review for reasons to watch Survival Of The Thickest. Without further ado, let’s get right into our expectations for season 2.

Spoilers Ahead

Mavis’ Career

Mavis knows exactly what she wants to do with her styling career. She has a vision, and she’s working hard toward it. It would’ve taken a lot of courage and heart to decline Natasha’s offer, but it didn’t align with Mavis’ goals, so that’s all good. Fortunately, it all turns out well in the end because Natasha comes back to her at the prom. It may not be as a client, but these are signs of healing on Natasha’s part, and she may not feel as abandoned anymore. On the other hand, with a successful show with the lingerie brand and the massive prom, Mavis is slowly inching towards the ultimate balance of doing what she loves while also making money off of it (wow, such a dream!). In the next season, we can expect her to jump out of her comfort zone more and find new varied clients in the industry and outside of it. Of course, it’s not a steady slope, and we can expect some disasters along the way, which is what makes these shows enjoyable, amirite?

Mavis And Luca

Of course, we need to address the elephant in the room first. The season finale ended with a trip of passion to Italy and Mavis and Luca seemingly getting back together. We’re definitely all for Luca, who loves Mavis for who she is, understands her career, gives her room to be herself, and at the same time has a charming naivety to his personality. There’s no way Mavis is going back to Jacque, but it is possible for the second season to introduce a new love interest, as it is the norm of such shows. Still, Survival Of The Thickest mostly subverts expectations in terms of tropes, and that’s what makes it extra special, so it would be amazing to see Luca and Mavis go steady in their relationship. This doesn’t mean there won’t be any ups and downs, but we would hope that the drama is their own with no external factors involved. We’re rooting for this adorable couple, for sure!

India And Khalil

On the other side, we left off with a cliffhanger for Mavis’ best friend Khalil’s love life. He spent the whole season pining after and getting with India, one of his art students. Khalil really likes India because he went from sleeping around to being a committed man just for her. He even purchased a couch for his bachelor pad! These are clear signs that Khalil is all in, but later we find out that India has a son, and her ex-husband doesn’t like Khalil at all. Fair enough; he’s too good to be true, so jealousy is warranted. But this leaves Khalil in a tough spot because India’s ex is trying to distance Khalil from India and her son Cooper. By the end of the series, Khalil realizes that he is hurt by the fact that India isn’t fighting for him, specifically when it comes to celebrating Cooper’s birthday. It was Khalil who taught him how to rollerskate, so when Cooper was having a party at the rink, it only made sense for Khalil to be there. It seems like India and he are far enough in their relationship for that situation to be welcome. So, in the end, when Khalil sees that India is having a tough time picking sides, he decides to back off a little and take some time away from her. It’s not a massive thing, of course, because it’s at Mavis’ party, but it definitely looks like a break. Hopefully, they’ll be able to sort things out soon enough.

Marley And Her Queerness

We’ve only just touched upon how Marley feels about her queerness. She’s a confident black woman who has always had a man on her arm, and thanks to therapy and her two good friends, Marley is able to step out and finally bring out another side of her. We see the least of Marley amongst the main leads, so we can hope for a little more expansion of her character arc. What does she do exactly, how did she get there? and, of course, her relationship with the new good doctor.

There’s a lot to learn about the relationship between Khalil and Mavis. We know they’ve been childhood friends, but with such short episodes, we don’t really get to see the full extent of that friendship. A flashback episode would be so much fun. We really appreciated the arc that Khalil and Marley go on as just friends of a friend to finding their own middle ground with each other, so we can hope to see more of that. We do hope to see the entire main cast returning for a jam-packed second season that is funnier and more out there. Additionally, a little more of Luca and Mavis’ mother interacting would be the cherry on top, for sure.
