Did Kate Kill Gemma?
The fourth episode of “You” Season 4 begins with an inquiry session in which the investigators thank Joe for tipping them off to Simon’s former assistant, Blue. Joe was relieved that he was still not in trouble. But there was one more surprise in store for him. Phoebe invited him to stay at her Hampsbridge country house. Joe couldn’t refuse because he’d get to know these people better and possibly find out who the killer was. Kate was getting calls from someone asking if she needed security, but she refused any help. Meanwhile, Adam was consulting with his manager who reminded him of his debts. Adam was unconcerned about it because he didn’t need to worry about the source of money. He would call his father, and the money would be sent to all the lenders. However, upon arrival at the country house, Joe discovered that there would be no Wi-Fi, making it difficult for him to keep in contact with the killer. Joe also had the opportunity to speak with Gemma, Phoebe’s rich and arrogant friend, who didn’t find him particularly interesting. Even though Wi-Fi was unavailable, secret letters remained a viable option. Joe discovered an anonymous letter slid under his door.
In full preparation, Joe went to the location specified in the letter—the Portrait Gallery. But it was not the killer, but rather just Phoebe, who desired to be intimate with Joe. Joe declined her proposal and discovered that it was Roald’s idea, not Phoebe’s, to invite him over to her country house. Roald was one of the friends who had always had his sights set on Kate, so he could be the potential killer who cleared the path by killing Malcolm. Joe had his suspicions on Gemma when he saw her treating the housekeepers inhumanely. However, she seemed to have lacked the courage to commit a murder. The only thing she was capable of was torturing the average working people. She was just a horrible, pampered brat with no sense of humility. Joe tried to avoid getting sidetracked by the romance when Kate repeatedly seduced him, but he couldn’t resist becoming intimate with her.
Resuming his investigation, Joe looked through Roald’s belongings and discovered that he had invaded Kate’s privacy and made inappropriate recordings of her with his camera. Joe realized Roald was one of the psychos in this bunch, hiding behind a decent face. Both he and Roald want the opportunity to speak with each other in private. Therefore, Roald invited Joe for a hunt. After getting prepared with loaded rifles, Joe and Roald went hunting. The way Roald kept killing those birds, Joe found he surely had killer instincts within him. And that was indeed true, as we see Roald pointing his gun at Joe, probably wanting to kill him, but Kate interrupted his plan. As Joe walks away, we see Roald making every effort to persuade Kate that she needs someone to support her, but Kate refuses. Kate didn’t want anyone to get involved in her life, not even the bouncers her father had sent to protect her.
Roald eventually couldn’t hide his rage at the dinner table. Roald and Gemma began to suspect that Joe was the murderer. Joe was perplexed, even though it appeared that they were mocking him. Meanwhile, Phoebe was able to divert their attention by initiating a murder mystery game. While everyone else was high on drugs and alcohol, Joe and Kate took a private moment to talk to each other. Kate explained her family background. She was the daughter of an activist investor, Tom Lockwood, a vile person who usually dismantled all the businesses and profited from them. By seizing the companies, he destroyed the lives of several workers, making him one of the most powerful men in the world.
After digesting this information, Joe realized he was mistaken in thinking Kate was ordinary among them all, as she turned out to be the wealthiest of the bunch. Kate, on the other hand, did not want to live in her father’s shadow and desired to make her own name. Joe consoled her by relating to her issues and giving her a pep talk about how their past had no control over who they were now or who they wanted to be in the future. After comforting Kate, he got back into the business and began looking through Roald’s belongings once more, but this time he was caught by Roald, who smacked him and threw him out the window, but luckily, Joe survived, falling upon a bush.
Joe regained consciousness and returned to the house but was surprised to find Kate missing. As he dashed into Kate’s room to check on her, he encountered yet another disaster: Gemma’s dead body. Kate sat next to her body, holding a knife. Even though she didn’t like Gemma, it doesn’t seem like Kate could have killed her, so why was she there with a murder weapon in her hand? Was Kate the one who was murdering people? Let’s find out in later episodes.
