‘Un/Happy For You’ Movie Ending Explained & Recap: Did Zy And Juancho Get Back Together?

Taking a break from holiday movies, Un/Happy For You, a Filipino Netflix Original, tells the story of an ex-couple who run into each other under extraordinary circumstances and discuss their relationship and eventual breakup. Un/Happy For You is an ideal mix of 500 Days of Summer, the Hollywood cult film, and the recently released Tamil film Lover, which was about toxic relationships and breakups. 

Where did Zy and Juancho meet?

Un/Happy For You began with Zy and Juancho meeting in Bicol, a province in the Philippines known for its spicy food. They enter a spicy food eating contest as partners and win the contest. Since their first meeting and owing to their shared interest in Bicol cuisine, which Juancho was good at, both fell in love eventually. He was an aspiring chef from then on, Juancho and Zy were together. 

Why did Juancho want to talk to Zy many years later?

Two years later, Juancho was now running a restaurant named Casa Rosa, named after his grandmother, Rosa. He was running this place with the help of his grandfather, his trainee chef Jon, and his business partner Aiah, aka Babi. In the hope of getting more investors on board to keep his restaurant going, he meets with a potential candidate and offers to make dinner with him. The highlight of the day is Juancho running into Zy after two years since their breakup. It was awkward for her to speak with him as they had had a bad breakup. It was not explained at this point under what circumstances the breakup happened, but Juancho took this as a chance to pester her to find out what led to them breaking up.

Zy was already not feeling right even before she ran into her ex-boyfriend, Juancho. She had moved to New York for further studies and was back in town as a part of an assignment to write an article on Bicol cuisine. Zy was shocked to find out Juancho was transforming Casa Rosa, a small unit, into a full-scale restaurant, and was awaiting approval from potential investors to expand the establishment to Manila. Zy eventually revealed that she was engaged to be married to a man named Matt in New York, which crushed Juancho. Two years ago, Zy had become distant after she moved to New York and Juancho spent most of the time clinging to the phone, begging for her to speak to him. She eventually let him know she was seeing someone and abruptly broke up with him. 

Was Juancho harassing Zy?

Juancho was retaliating for the way she broke up by forcing loads of people Zy was supposed to interview to back out so that she would have no choice but to get most of her information on Bicol cuisine from him. Both began to spend time with each other as she wanted to do research on said cuisine. She was also introduced to Babi, Juancho’s business partner, whom she initially assumed to be his girlfriend. Juancho had hoped the presence of Babi would make her feel jealous, but Zy was far from thinking about that scenario. 

What did Zy reveal about her breakup with Juancho?

Juancho had invited everyone that worked with him to the restaurant for a bar menu tasting. Zy was also invited for the same as his way of including her after their first few awkward days of meeting. Juancho eventually got drunk and got ticked off when Matt called Zy to speak to her. A drunk Juancho let his guard down and spoke about the awful breakup he had to endure as he believed Zy had cheated on him before breaking up. As the situation got tense, a distraught Zy had to reveal that she was not in a relationship with Matt or anyone else two years ago. She’d had to lie about the cheating part to get Juancho to stop begging her to make their relationship work. 

Why did Zy break up with Juancho?

Juancho confronted Zy as he was keen to find out what had made her want to break up with him. Initially, Zy was not keen on continuing this conversation as it was in the past. His insistence forced her to reveal that she was tired of mollycoddling him when they were together. It was revealed that Zy had invested money and time in helping Juancho set up a stall named Casa Rosa, but he’d been unable to take care of it. She received constant complaints, and Juancho had stopped contributing to household chores as well. She felt he was taking her for granted, which led to her leaving for New York for her studies and their eventual breakup. 

What was Zy’s plan?

Zy and Juancho finally had a catharsis after having the conversation about their abrupt breakup. Juancho apologized to her for being needy and clingy. Zy, on the other hand, changed the subject of her interview and decided to focus the article only on Juancho and his upcoming restaurant serving Bicol cuisine. Matt was not happy with this idea, but he went along with it because Zy was convinced about her new idea. Zy and Juancho spent days looking into their video footage of them preparing for the first version of Casa Rosa. Reliving the memories of this time led to them sleeping with each other once again for the first time in the two years since their breakup.

Did Juancho lose his investor and his business partner?

On the night of the investor dinner Juancho had planned to save his restaurant, he was in a confused state of mind, since Zy had walked out on him the second time after spending the night with him. A distressed Jauncho again confronted her, only this time she was with Matt, who had flown down to Bicol to surprise her. In front of him, an agitated Juancho revealed he and Zy had slept together, which devastated Matt. 

Zy was in a confused state of mind as Matt left in no time, and she was now livid at Juancho’s childish behavior once again costed her the engagement. Even though Zy had cheated, Matt deserved to know it from her and not from Juancho, who had made it his mission to be with her, indicating he had not moved on. A tired Zy had let him know that she did love Juancho, but that was not enough to let them be together in a relationship as many things have happened since their breakup two years ago. Zy had moved on, and she was planning to have a life in New York. Juancho was planning to open a restaurant in Manila and had no plans to migrate to another country. Clearly, both were not meant for each other, but Juancho could not see that. Juancho’s urgency to meet Zy on the night of his investors dinner proved to be disastrous once again. The key investor pulled out as he assumed Juancho was not serious about his venture. This move angered everyone who was hoping this deal would be a success. 

How did Juancho turn his life around?

Juancho, in one night, had lost the woman he loved and the restaurant he was trying to revive. Juancho had reached his lowest point in life, and anyone would assume he wouldn’t be able to come out of it. Juancho went through his mourning period since he had lost everything he ever wanted. It was his grandfather who encouraged him to pick up from where he left off. His grandfather was right, as there was no easy way out to work towards this goal he had been dreaming of for many years. His grandfather also reminded him how he and his wife Rosa had raised him to be a winner, as his parents were never in the picture. Both wanted him to carry forward the legacy left by Rosa. Juancho needed this, as he was mentally down since his professional and personal life had gone for a toss. His grandfather’s words of encouragement meant a lot for him. The only way to move forward was to restart their life and not worry about making mistakes again. 

Did Zy and Juancho get back together?

Juancho got back into the grind of restarting and refurbishing his menu once again in the hope of impressing another set of investors. This indicated that Juancho was not willing to give up. He was quickly moving on as he’d learned that life has to move forward and he needed to focus on his goal. Zy had also let him know he did not come through when she tried to help him establish himself. He had to reestablish himself, not to prove her wrong, but to prove himself that he was capable enough to stand up on his own. He apologizes to everyone working with him, including Babi, for ruining their chance to prove themselves to him and the guests that would come to their restaurant to indulge in authentic Bicol cuisine. He felt he had been letting everyone down by focusing on himself and not the business he wanted to establish for a long time. 

Juancho finally got the closure he needed, which helped him finally dedicate his time to making a new menu for Casa Rosa and requested his team to help him. Zy also joined them soon as a show of support. She was now single as Matt had broken up with her and flown back to the US. Zy was not planning to get back with Juancho, as their chapter was over, but they wanted to retain the memories of that relationship including the friendship. Zy and Juancho were finally on the same page, and both decided to move on to better things in life. 

By the end of the film, Juancho dropped her which was reminiscent of how he was the one who went to the airport when she was headed to New York for the first time. Zy’s trip started with her not wanting to deal with Juancho, but it turns out she was heading back after making amends with him. She’d also finally received closure after having broken up with him abruptly. As they bid goodbyes to each other, both remembered how it felt to be in love two years ago, even though things had changed drastically over the years. Both might not be in love anymore, but there was some intimacy between them, hoping they could remain friends. Even if they lost touch, the memory of a closure will help them move ahead in life. Zy and Juancho were happy for each other.
