Spoilers Ahead

Were Lethu and Lucky committed to each other?

Lethu and Lucky have been in a relationship for the past few years and together they run an event management company that handles weddings of the elite. One of the pre-wedding events of a couple that come from rich families became an instant hit, and Lethu was appreciated for it. Lucky could not stop admiring his girlfriend for the work she does. However, he did have concerns regarding Lethu’s best friend and their other business partner, Amanda. Amanda was clumsy but was good at handling tasks assigned to her. Lethu was close to firing her, but Amanda convinced her to keep her around and not let Lucky brainwash her into making a major business decision.

Was Themba a serial cheater?

Themba was Lucky’s older brother, who’d been married to Bridget for many years. Bridget and Themba were conservative Christians, and both believed in the institution of marriage. After having found another woman’s innerwear amongst her clothes, Bridget confronted him and asked him to leave her. Lucky had to intervene on the insistence of Themba and sort the matter out. Lethu was just glad that Lucky was not a serial cheater like his brother. When Lucky proposed marriage to Lethu, she happily accepted it, but Amanda was not happy about it. Lucky, however, ended up getting physically intimate with Amanda on the night of the celebration of his engagement, unbeknownst to Lethu.

Was Lucky cheating on Lethu?

Lethu one day found out from her gynecologist that she had chlamydia. It was not that hard to connect the dots and conclude that she got it from Lucky. It was safe to conclude that Lucky had been unfaithful to her, and she confronted him about it. He confessed to having cheated only once, but on checking his phone, she found he had been sleeping around with many women. Lucky began to manipulate and gaslight his way into keeping her in the relationship and revealed he cannot be in a monogamous relationship. He conveniently did not let her know about the affair he was having with Amanda.

What was Lethu’s proposal to make the relationship work?

Lethu had to stay away from Lucky to process the betrayal she felt in the wake of infidelity and his confession that he cannot be fully committed to her. Lethu spent some time with her grandmother, and she shared the dilemma she was going through. Since Lethu’s grandmother was from another generation, she asked her to forgive Lucky. The old woman stated men by nature were not monogamous, and they would look for escapades outside of their committed relationships. It was a woman’s duty to either ignore it or forgive them. This was not the kind of advice Lethu should have been given. Since she was deeply in love with Lucky, she chose to forgive him and had a proposal for him to make the relationship work.

Lethu wanted an open relationship where both him and her could briefly date and sleep with other people, but emotionally the couple would be loyal to each other. Lucky was insecure about the proposal initially, as he could not stand the sight of another man making his wife happy. He agreed to it because he wanted to prove that he would commit to her and not anyone else. The couple also agreed to not sleep with anyone they know, which would be a violation of trust. Lucky, however, continued his affair with Amanda and reminded her repeatedly that it was strictly a physical relationship.

Amanda, on the other hand, had wanted to take advantage of Lethu and Lucky’s new relationship arrangement as she was falling in love with her best friend’s fiance. She had hoped to get close to him and get him to commit to her. This again indicated Lucky was never planning to fully commit to Lethu as he went back to Amanda and violated the cardinal rule of the arrangement he had made with his fiancé.

Did Themba reform himself?

Themba, on the other hand, went back to cheating on his wife. His affair went bad when he was chased out of a woman’s home naked. Themba was again confronted by Bridget, who asked him to consider respecting the image of his family before getting into such messy affairs. Bridget at this point had given up on believing her husband would change. Themba took it upon himself to reform his ways. This was his way to prove he was deeply committed to Bridget. He joined one of her church congregations as his way of repenting for the mistakes he’d made in the past.

Themba promised he had changed his ways, but it was all a farce because he was a habitual cheater, and in no time at all, he went back to having affairs with other women. Lucky shared with him the new arrangement he and Lethu had, but Themba was unhappy with it. He was an old-school misogynist who believed affairs were supposed to remain discreet. It keeps the wives on the edge and tests their love for the spouse. According to him, open relationships were not the way to save the marriage. The brothers had different kinds of conversations about relationships every time they met. At one point, Themba had promised to be loyal, and so had Lucky, but they went back to their old ways in no time and tried to justify their actions to keep their relationships intact.

Was Lethu happy?

Lethu initially was happy with meeting new people and getting herself into activities that kept her mind distracted from the relationship troubles she and Lucky were facing. Lucky had begun to sleep around again, and he seemed to be happy with the arrangement as well. However, his insecurities sprung up many times as he started acting jealous whenever Lethu used to come back from her dates. This was a classic example of a man feeling the need to showcase his superiority.

While Lucky had been sleeping around way before this arrangement was made, he couldn’t wrap his head around Lethu doing the same with his knowledge. The arrangement was getting to him as he believed Lethu was supposed to be the loyal woman who waited for him at home while he would indulge in all manner of sin that was harmful for their relationship. Lucky was exactly like his older brother, who could never keep his promises. A habitual cheater would never change unless he/she genuinely went through a catharsis and put in an effort to better themselves. Lethu, on the other hand, went on a date, and there was a prospect of sleeping with the said man. She, however, realized she was doing this just to get back at Lucky and not for her own satisfaction. This indicated that she genuinely loved Lucky. She also had some self-respect to realize she would not behave like Lucky and give in to her temptations. Lethu was emotionally a stronger person, which made her walk away from the date and head back home. She could not get the image of Lucky getting intimate with other women out of her mind. This also proves that she probably did not trust Lucky, but she was willing to give him some benefit of the doubt for the sake of their relationship.

Did Lethu end her relationship with Lucky?

Lethu genuinely loved Lucky more, and her cutting the date short was an indication of that. She could only hope Lukcy would not go back to his old ways and would consider the well-being of their relationship over his temptations. Lethu, Lucky, and Amanda were handling one of the biggest weddings in the country. Lethu was busy with the nitty-gritty of the event as she got to talk to the bride, who was having cold feet. Lethu could understand the bride’s concerns, as she felt some men could not be trusted. The bride’s concerns may have come from her previous relationships, or from the couples she had seen around her. Lethu felt the bride’s concerns were genuine, as she needed a partner who would love, value, and respect her from the start till the end. This made Lethu also realize she wanted something more from her relationship with Lucky, and he will never give her that after all. Lethu was slowly maturing as a person and realizing maybe she deserved better, and Lucky was not the person for her.

Umjolo: The Gone Girl ended with Lethu catching Lucky and Amanda in the act, and for the first time she did not break down. It was as if she had expected him to ruin the relationship. Lethu was kind of relieved, as she now had a reason to give herself a clean exit from a relationship that did not serve her well. Despite people asking her to forgive Lucky, including himself, she could not find her way to do that. Lethu let him know he was a mess, and that she knew he would keep doing what he was doing while forcing her to maintain the boundaries of the relationship. This also proves Lucky never kept his promise and always assumed he would get away with his infidelity because Lethu loved him. Lucky was an ungrateful man who would never change until he really wanted to. Lethu was happy to walk away and fire Amanda from the job as well. Amanda was a horrible best friend as well, who wanted something she could not get her hands on. Going after her best friend’s boyfriend was not the right path, and she chose to be selfish. Lucky was selfish as well, to the point Lethu stated both of them were awful and deserved each other. This was the end of Lethu’s traumatic relationship, and Lethu chose to be happy and not miserable by the end of it. Her going back to the wedding party was an indication of the fact that she wanted to move on, be single for a while, and live life on her terms.
