The one hour thirty-eight minutes long movie Trouble on Netflix is probably one of the best action comedy films I have watched recently. The story follows a guy named Conny, who finds himself in a classic “wrong place, wrong time” situation, as while he’s installing a TV at Luka’s house, Luka is murdered, and Conny gets wrongly accused of the crime and, even though he didn’t do it, he’s locked up for 18 years for the murder. Conny’s lawyer, Hasse, had promised to help with his appeal but never did. So, naturally, Conny was desperate to clear his name and get back home with his daughter, and decided to break out of prison. He remembered Luka’s last words before dying, “phone,” which means there was something on that phone that was the reason behind his murder. What’s on the phone? Will Conny finally prove his innocence? Let’s find that out from this explainer of this cat-and-mouse, fast-paced movie.
Spoilers Ahead
How did Conny end up in prison?
Conny was just a simple electronics salesman who lived with his daughter. He was a bit jealous of his ex-wife and her new husband Tomas, who was a successful pilot. Conny wished he could be like them, and have a respectable job, especially since his daughter wanted a horse for her birthday, but he just didn’t have that kind of money. Seeing his ex-wife and her new husband being able to provide everything for his daughter made Conny feel even worse. Still, Conny was a dedicated father, so he tried to pick up extra shifts at the store to make more money. Conny was also a tech genius, which is why he was sent to a customer’s house to install a high-tech TV. The house belonged to Luka and his wife, Mimmi. Mimmi had to step out for a bit during the installation and promised to be back in an hour, leaving Conny alone to work with his noise-canceling headphones on, completely unaware of what was about to happen. Luka, meanwhile, returned home, and unfortunately, someone else followed him, his murderer.
Basically, Luka worked near a restaurant called Bamboo Bamboo, where some shady drug trading was going on. The police busted the deal, and in the chaos, someone tried to escape with a bag full of money. In the parking lot, Luka witnessed this person, who also hurt a police officer in the process. Luka recorded the whole thing on his phone and the person who committed the crime was none other than a police officer herself, named Helena. She saw Luka recording everything and couldn’t risk being exposed, especially since she was a police officer involved in the drug trade. So, she followed Luka home and killed him with a screwdriver, right behind Conny, who was still busy working on the TV. When Conny turned around, he saw Luka bleeding on the floor, screaming about his phone. Conny panicked to find Luka’s phone and grabbed the screwdriver (murder weapon) to defend himself, but instead, he got knocked out from behind. When Conny woke up, covered in Luka’s blood, Mimmi found him, and he was quickly arrested. The police believed that Conny had tried to rob the house, got surprised by Luka, and killed him to cover it up. Thus, even though Conny was innocent, he was sent to jail for 18 years.
How did Diana get to know about Helena’s involvement?
At the police precinct, there was an officer named Diana who had doubts about Conny’s involvement in the murder. She had met him before at the electronics store when she’d bought headphones, and the way Conny interacted with her didn’t seem like the behavior of a murderer. Yet, this wasn’t enough to prove his innocence, so Diana decided to dig deeper to investigate further. Meanwhile, in prison, Conny started to work in the laundry room when he discovered a tunnel behind a washing machine. It turned out to be part of a prison break plan by an inmate named Musse and his boss, the same guys busted in the drug deal that Luka had recorded. Musse and his boss saw a picture in Conny’s cell of a man in a pilot’s uniform with his wife and daughter, and they mistakenly thought Conny was a pilot who could help them flee the country in their private jet. Conny was excited about the chance to escape but still wanted to prove his innocence. Therefore, one day, Conny escaped through the tunnel and went to Mimmi’s house during Luka’s funeral, where he convinced her that he wasn’t the real killer, and urged her to find Luka’s phone, which had the truth.
Mimmi searched the house and eventually found the phone hidden in the ceiling lamp. When she played the video on the TV, it showed Helena, the corrupt police officer, trying to run away with the bag of money, and it proved that she was the one who killed Luka after he recorded her on his phone. Just then, Helena arrived at Mimmi’s house, supposedly to check on her. But when Mimmi saw Helena’s face on the TV and realized she was the killer, Helena knew she had to cover it up fast. That same day, as Musse, his boss, and Conny headed to their private jet, Conny managed to delay them by causing a car accident to meet with Mimmi to get the phone, but Helena saw this and alerted all units, framing the escapees as dangerous convicts on the run. The police chased Conny and the others to the airport, where Conny managed to ditch Musse and his boss to hand over the phone to his lawyer, Hasse. But before he could do so, Helena and other officers arrived and Helena shot Conny in the shoulder, took the phone from his coat pocket, and destroyed it by burning it in a microwave to erase the evidence. But to cover her tracks, Helena went to the hospital where Conny was being treated as she planned to kill him with sodium cyanide. However, Diana was still suspicious about this whole thing, and thus also came to the hospital to interrogate Conny and hear his side of the story. And just as Diana entered the room she realized something was wrong when she found Conny drugged and unconscious, and found Helena lying in wait to attack them. When Diana tried to confront her, Helena turned things around and shot herself in the shoulder to make it look like she was the victim and that Diana was trying to flee with Conny. When a guard came in after hearing the commotion, Helena killed him and claimed Diana was responsible for that too. But thank god Conny regained consciousness and knocked Helena out and managed to escape with Diana by jumping out of the hospital window.
Was Helena arrested?
With the phone destroyed and the police after them, Diana and Conny knew they had to prove their innocence. The only way was to return to Luka’s house, as they remembered that when Mimmi played the video from Luka’s phone on their high-tech TV, it meant it was saved on the TV’s hard drive. Luckily, it was still there, but since they didn’t have a phone to record the footage, they had to take the whole TV with them. They came to the Rux hotel carrying the big TV to meet Hasse, however, when they arrived, they saw Hasse with Helena, involved in another drug trade on the rooftop. That’s when Conny realized Hasse was in on it too, and he couldn’t be trusted. As they tried to figure out their next move, the police, led by Superintendent Josef, followed their trail to attack them. Diana thought Josef might be the person to show the evidence to, but a gunfight broke out, and the TV got shot in the chaos. Hasse tried to flee with a bag of money from the drug trade, but he ran into Conny. Just as they faced off, the police arrived and arrested Hasse, who left the bag of money behind. At the same time, Musse, who was after Conny for tricking him, appeared in the hotel, and Conny handed Musse the bag of money to shut him up. Meanwhile, Diana was arrested by Josef and Helena, where Helena pretended to be the hero who caught the “criminal.” But Conny, being the tech guy, had managed to save the hard drive from the TV. With the help of a hotel staff member, he connected it to the elevator’s TV screen. In the elevator, Helena, Josef, Diana, and several other officers watched in shock as the video played which exposed Helena as the real culprit. Helena was obviously desperate to distract Josef and even tried to propose to him, but it didn’t work. In the end, Helena was finally arrested.
In the end, we see that Conny was proven innocent, released from jail, and, being the devoted father he was, made a grand entrance by riding in on a horse to impress his daughter. Conny wanted to show her that he could be a hero, even if just for one day. However, things didn’t go as planned because the horse went wild and tried to break through the children’s crowd, which caused Conny to fall off, but his daughter was happy with the gesture. And in the end we also see how throughout this experience, Conny and Diana became really close, and we can expect that there will definitely be something romantic brewing between them in the future.
