The Wheel Of Time returns this week with a new season and new characters, but if you’ve forgotten any of the important characters, don’t fret because we’ve got you covered. The high-fantasy show is adapted from Robert Jordan’s works and drifts quite far from the source material. For those of us who haven’t read the books, the show is quite entertaining and has a great dose of fantasy. The show first aired in the year for fantasy lovers! There was Dune, Sandman, The Witcher season 2, and more fantasy media dropping back in 2021. While we are still quite lucky in the realm of fantasy, people have high hopes for the second season in comparison to the first one because of the introduction of the new characters and the pandemic no longer being an obstacle for shooting. So, let’s quickly break down the search for the Dragon reborn through the characters of The Wheel Of Time season 1.
Spoilers Ahead
Rand al’Thor
The Dragon reborn himself. Rand can be titled the main protagonist of the series. He’s a brooding young boy who cares a lot for his friends. Rand is deeply in love with Egwene in season 1 and will do anything in his power to keep her safe. He discovers that he is the Dragon and then decides to sacrifice himself for his friends. At the end of season one, Rand ends who he thinks is the Dark One and then leaves Moiraine to lie to his friends that he died in the process. As it is known that men who use the power go mad because of it, Rand, who felt the madness take over him when he channeled the One Power, decided to get away from the ones he loved so he wouldn’t end up hurting them or, worse, killing them.
Egwene al’Vere
Egwene is one of the five important people in The Wheel Of Time. Moiraine teaches her to channel on their journey because she thinks Egwene is the Dragon at first. Egwene is not as powerful as Rand or Nyneve, but she is still as important. Egwene wanted to be a Wisdom like Nynaeve in the Two Rivers initially, but then she was taken away by Moiraine to the White Tower. Egwene isn’t naive, but she trusts Moiraine very much; she too would do anything to save her friends, and her abilities work best when she’s trying to save someone she cares about.
Matrim (Mat) Cauthon
Mat is the rebel child of the group. After stealing a dagger from a shadow city that put everyone in danger, Mat made another terrible decision by staying back and not traveling with the group to the Tower. Mat really only cares about keeping his sisters safe and happy, but there is a darkness in him, according to Moiraine, which is why the dagger was so powerful in his possession. At the end of season 1, we don’t know where Mat is, but Moiraine had asked the Red Ajah to find him and keep him under their care at the end of the season, meaning he may be in deep trouble.
Perrin Aybara
One of the other suspected Dragons, Perrin, is an ex-blacksmith. He accidentally killed his wife, Laila, while trying to fight off the Trollocs. Perrin has a special connection to wolves, and his eyes turn golden when he or anyone he cares for is in danger. It’s almost as if he commands the wolves to help him. At the end of the season, Perrin is with Nynaeve and Egwene.
Nynaeve al’Meara
Nyneve happens to be one of the most powerful channelers ever seen when she tries to save Lan’s life after the false Dragon almost killed him. Nyneve has a lot of pride, and it sometimes prevents her from doing the right things. She needs Egwene to egg her on and see what is important. Nyneve was the wisdom at Two Rivers, and she got away from the Trollocs all on her own. She and Lan fall in love with each other, but they know they can’t be together in the end.
Moiraine Damodred
Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, Moiraine travels for 20 years to find the Dragon, only to realize there are five potential Dragons. Moiraine’s warder is Lan, and they share a beautiful bond. Unfortunately, she masks the bond when she takes Rand to The Eye of the World and ends up losing her power because of the “Dark One”, who we now know is Ishamael (based on promotional material!). She is also in love with Siuan Sanche, the Amyrlian Seat, and they both share a secret relationship.
Lan al’Mandragoran
Moiraine’s warder, Lan, is the son of the Malkier royal family, but when the city fell to the Great Blight when he was a baby, he was taken to Fal Dara and brought up there. Initially, Lan knows everything that Moiraine is doing, but by the end of the season, she hides everything from him, what with their bond broken. What will be next for them?
Loial
The Ogier helps Moiraine and the group on their quest to figure out who the Dragon is and essentially save the world. A jovial fellow with a lot to teach and learn. At the end of season one, Loial is severely injured by Padan Fain.
Elmindreda “Min” Farshaw
Min is what we could call a psychic. She can see the future of people like an aura around them. Moiraine thinks Min can help her figure out who the Dragon is, but she doesn’t give away the truth. When Rand realizes he is the Dragon, she acknowledges his discovery.
Liandrin and Alanna
Liandrin is part of the Red Ajah and is an opposing force to Moiraine. The Reds don’t have warders, and she wants to get Nynaeve on her team. Alanna, on the other hand, is a Green Ajah. She is supportive of Moiraine and a good friend of hers, even with Moiraine’s quiet disposition.
Logain Ablar
The False Dragon, who got caught by the Aes Sedai. He had an army of followers because of how strong he was, and everyone believed he was the Dragon because of how powerful he was. Pairs of Aes Sedai had to shield his power, but he ended up killing Kerene, the Green Ajah.
Padan Fain
Padan looks like a simple peddler who visits Two Rivers all the time, but he is a “Darkfriend” who is in support of the Dark One. At the end of season 1, he shows up with the Trollocs and ends up killing a lot of the good guys. Padan is part of Ishaemael’s group.
