The Sticky on Amazon Prime Video is one of those hilarious crime dramas that discusses how things go awry when a normal person commits a crime without any criminal experience. Since they are decent human beings, they assume their plan would work as per their vision. As a result, there are some characters with good ideals who have been wronged by awful people. There are also awful people who want to prove their prowess. The show is loosely based on ‘the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.’
Spoilers Ahead
Ruth
Margo Martindale is amazing as Ruth Landry, who is taking care of the maple farm owned by her husband Martin. Ruth loves her husband dearly, as they have been together for many years. Martin is in a coma, and Ruth spends every minute of the day by his side, hoping he will wake up one day. Martin has been set up with the required medical devices at home since Ruth can stay close to him. To her horror, her husband’s nemesis, Leonard, has filed suit against her, claiming she cannot be taking care of the farm since the property legally belongs to her husband. Ruth is aware Leonard is planning to poach Martin’s land at a bare minimum price, and she’s keen on making sure he does not succeed.
Ruth wants to get back at him, but she does not have the money to pursue this motion. She learns of maple syrup worth 150 million dollars being kept in a storage unit, and somehow she is convinced to carry out a robbery with two more people who have reason to get back at Leonard. Ruth and the two men face a lot of obstacles, and one of the major ones has to be the police. Around the same time, a murder has taken place, and the police are looking to find out who the killer is. Ruth feels one of the men with her might be the killer, but she has to stay focused on robbing the storage unit.
Remy
Guillaume Cyr, the Canadian actor, portrays the role of Remy Bouchard, the security guard at Leonard’s storage unit that harbors all the maple syrup the farmers turned in as a part of the association for sale. Remy was the only security guard of the place, and he took advantage of that by robbing one barrel of maple syrup every month. Remy is the only child of his parents, and they mollycoddle him a lot. Being a typical countryside man, he feels committing crime is easy. His mind starts churning when he comes across a man named Mike who has links to a Boston-based mafia group called the Devaney family. He shares the information he has about the storage unit in the hope he will be able to carry out a heist on a bigger scale. He wants to involve his friend Orville, but he is found dead the next day.
Remy, just like Ruth, has never involved himself in a crime of this magnitude, and they meet each other through Mike. Soon he and Ruth realize Mike is not the person he claims to be, and he has a murderous instinct. Things get out of hand very quickly when Remy is accused of killing Orville, and he begins to suspect Mike has a role in murdering Orville.
Mike
Christopher Diamantopoulos portrays the role of Mike, aka Michael, a henchman working for the Devaney mafia family based in Boston. It is not established how he is related to Martin and Ruth. He does, however, turn up for the couple every time they are in trouble. He visits Martin, and Ruth asks him for a way out of the situation with Leonard. Mike initially has no plan in hand, but after having run into Remy and learning of the maple syrup barrels, he decides to include Ruth in the heist. Mike, in reality, is a house sitter with a bare minimum of experience killing people. This is the reason why his first instinct is always to kill people to prove that he is a capable henchman too. Mike is a stubborn man who never works as per the plan set by Ruth, even though she has more ground-level experience working in the town. Mike, being himself, always defends his moves until his crimes catch up to him. Suddenly he is on the hit list of his employers, the Devaney family, and he will have to find a way out to save himself.
Beau
The amazing Jamie Lee Curtis has a cameo as Beau, a hitman herself, who is hired to kill Mike. Beau is sent by the Devaney family to kill Mike as he was being hunted by the Quebec police for attempting to kill Gary, a security guard. Mike is also being suspected in the death of Orville, Remy’s best friend. Beau is like a parent figure to Mike, but ever since an incident that rendered her lame and needing a walking stick to move around, their relationship soured. It is established that Beau and Mike share a love-hate relationship with each other. With Ruth and Remy accidentally running into Beau when they come to meet Mike, the real hitman learns of the heist they are planning to carry out and begins to involve herself and change the actual proposition according to her expertise in the crime world.
Leonard
Guy Nadon is the antagonist Leonard, who is the president of the maple farmers association. He is in charge of the maple syrup that is collected in barrels and stored in a large storage unit. Leonard is a petty man, and ignorant too, since he doesn’t think of keeping high security around the facility. It is the lack of it that propels Remy to rob him, and he involves Mike and Ruth in this. Just like any power-hungry man, Leonard is on a spree to buy land off struggling farmers at rock-bottom prices. He plans to do that to Ruth and Martin as well, but the former is not willing to give up yet. He is also a stubborn man who wants to turn up the heat on Ruth to the point she will be forced to sell her farm out of desperation. Liam, his son, tries to talk some sense into Leonard. The old man is too heavy on his ego to let go of the plan he has come up with to stay in power.Â
Liam
Peter Seabourne portrays the role of Liam, Leonard’s son. Liam is the only person who sees how power hungry and diabolical his father is. He also sees how futile the rift between Leonard and Ruth is. As a result, he gets Ruth bailed from a local jail on charges filed by his father; he claims he needs to be the same person as two elderly people are trying to pull each other down at any given point. It wasn’t too late when Liam realized his father had carried out some unspeakable crimes against the community, which forced many farmers to leave the countryside. He begins to separate himself from his father’s way and soon faces the consequence.
Maurice
Michel Perron is Maurice, Remy’s father. He is a protective father who always goes out of his way to make sure Remy remains safe. He is an emotionally available parent figure, which begins to nauseate Remy a little bit as he feels Maurice is treating him like a ten-year-old kid. Maurice is a simpleton who does not realize that his statement may have caused the police officers Teddy and Valérie to assume Remy may have killed Orville. Maurice is a nice guy, a typical countryside man who feels the world is a peaceful place.
Teddy
Gita Miller portrays the role of Teddy, the local police officer who is the first person to have found Orville’s body in a barrel full of maple syrup. Teddy is a smart person who is able to connect the dots and find some leads in the case. She is, however, put on the back foot when the detective Valérie steps in as the homicide specialist sent to investigate the death of Orville. Orville is known to have links with several mafias, which is why it is important to find out who killed him. Teddy is proactive in the case since Valérie joins. Any murder of this kind happens rarely in a small town where Teddy resides now. This is the reason she is excited to work with Valérie to find the killer.
Valérie
Suzanne Clément, the popular Canadian French actress, portrays the role of Detective Valérie Nadeau. She is a homicide detective assigned to find the killer in Orville’s murder case. She is not keen on taking up this case as it is a small town. She is aware small towns are closely knit, and it will be hard to crack such murder cases. Even though Valérie’s subordinate Teddy is happy to help her, she cannot wait to leave this town and move back to the city. As a senior officer of the law, she brings in experience, but she lacks the connection that Teddy has with the locals. Valérie is close to catching Orville’s murderer, but it is not who they think it is.Â
