The ending of The Serpent Queen Season 2 will remind people of the ‘Red Wedding’ episode from the Game of Thrones series. Catherine managed to eliminate many of her enemies and others who betrayed her. Her maneuver showcased her ruthless nature and her ability to manipulate her enemies by making them walk into her den and slaughter them. It also indicated that she had managed to put Anjou under her spell and make him do all of her work. However, she and her son Anjou blamed the Guise family for the massacre that killed every Protestant in the city around the palace, including Sister Edith. Cardinal Charles and Francoise Guise were put in prison in no time. Catherine wanted to monopolize the power behind the throne, which inadvertently made her children see the worst version of her. Rahima was devastated as Duke Alessandro was killed, while Catherine did not feel the least bit guilty of killing her half-brother. Rahima was pregnant with Duke Alessandro’s baby, and she intended to keep the child.
Season two ended on the note of King Charles being gravely sick, and him being engaged to the granddaughter of the Holy Roman Emperor for the sole purpose of her taking care of him and his health. There is a possibility that King Charles would finally get married to the granddaughter as per the plan. There will be another Protestant and Catholic union that will officially end the civil war. King Charles might pass shortly after his nuptials, possibly triggering another civil war in the court, and a battle over who would be the next monarch that will take control of France. Catherine will outlive another child of hers, and will have to take reigns back into her hands to make sure she remains the Regent. Catherine, despite opposition, will place her last living son, Anjou, on the Throne of France in her attempt to continue exerting control over it. Princess Margot and her new husband might oppose this move because of Anjou’s sexuality and queer habits, but Catherine would have to reassure the council her son is a better person to be on the throne than Henri, who was only seeking power. Catherine might also use the woman card and claim women cannot be monarchs, unlike how things turned out in England. She will try to keep her daughter Margot at bay to make sure Anjou’s seat is not threatened.
Anjou will get a taste for power as well if he is made the new King of France. There is a possibility he would begin to splurge on himself as a king, and that would draw the unwanted attention of his rivals. They could use this to either kill him or sideline him and pave the way for the new monarch, which could be anybody. Princess Margot and her mother, Queen Catherine’s conflict will reach its peak as they will undermine each other constantly. Princess Margot would also develop a thirst for power and try to put her husband on the throne. This is the first time she might try to go against her family for forcing her to get married to her cousin. Henri is good to her from the start, she would begin to reciprocate his feelings and encourage him to prepare for the fight against her mother. Since Antoine and Louis Bourbon are alive by the end of season two. This again indicates they would not give up their dream of being in power as well. They might discretely approach Henri and offer their assistance in making him the next King of France.
The Bourbon brothers might go across the continent to find allies that would rally behind Henri and his wife Princess Margot to be the next rulers of France. There is a possibility that the Guise brothers will be released from imprisonment on Margot’s request. They would also join hands with the Bourbon brothers to seek revenge for the massacre carried out in their name. There is no indication what happened to Antoinette de Guise, as the makers failed to let the audience know if she was dead or alive. If she is alive, she might also rally with the Bourbons to push Catherine and her stooges away from power.
Catherine will lose a lot this time, but she will not give up on her power. Just like before, she would make sure to arm-twist her way into the seat of power in France. She might also work with Queen Elizabeth to make sure her power is secured in France; there is a possibility that Mary, Queen of Scots, would make a reappearance this time to save Queen Catherine some trouble. Catherine would bring her back and use her as a pawn. Anjou might get married, despite his interest in men, with him being forced to make this decision for the sake of securing himself as the King of France. Catherine in the second season was warned of a newborn child that would lead to her downfall. It could be either her grandchild from Charles or Margot, or Rahima’s child with Alessandro, which could be the reason behind Catherine going out of power.
Rahima will do anything in her power to destroy Catherine as revenge for killing Alessandro. Rahima might also get in cahoots with someone from Sister Edith’s group to get back her mistress. Aabis’s fate is also unknown, but there is a chance she could be alive. Aabis will also play a major role in getting rid of Catherine. The next season, Catherine is essentially surrounded by people who want her powerless and dead. This will either mentally break the Queen Regent or she will again find her way out of it and secure herself to be indestructible. She will stay true to the name given to her by her enemies, “The Serpent Queen.”
