The second season of Netflix’s The Night Agent brings Peter and Rose back onto the playing field, once again getting them embroiled in a game of secrets, cover-ups, shifting alliances, and conspiracies—one that can, and does, change the fate of the nation at the end. While a number of familiar faces from the first season are missing, as the story ventures in a new direction, the impact of the events of the first season is strongly felt in the newest chapter of the spy thriller series. Also, series fans will be pleased to learn that characterization has remained on point in the second season as well, especially as seen with the introduction of new characters. The narrative is more gripping this time around compared to the first season, and while at times the converging storyline of political conspiracies and a terrorism plot might seem a bit muddled, the plot sorts itself out well by the end. The ending of the second season sets the stage for an already greenlit third season, which will see Peter taking on his toughest challenge yet.

Spoilers Ahead

What Was Peter’s Mission in Bangkok?

Peter Sutherland was recruited as a Night Agent in the final moments of the first season, and the beginning of the second season follows Peter on one of his assignments in Bangkok, where he is partnered with fellow agent Alice, who is teaching him the ropes about espionage drills. The duo is tracking a CIA agent, Warren Stocker, who is allegedly selling confidential intel to potential buyers. However, during the mission, their cover gets blown, and the extraction location gets compromised as well, which results in Alice getting shot to death, though Peter somehow escapes with his life. Having experienced betrayal, Peter considers his new handler/case officer, Catherine Weaver, as crooked as his former mentor, Diane Farr, and he goes AWOL to find answers on his own. On the other hand, Catherine couldn’t fully trust Peter—firstly, during her tenure as a Night Agent, she was assigned to investigate the Pentagon leak allegations, which revealed Peter’s father to be a turncoat, and secondly, following the events at Camp David, Peter was hastily put into the Night Action team upon the President’s request, without necessary preparation or psychological evaluation. Catherine hadn’t wanted Peter to be a part of the Bangkok mission since the very beginning, which made Peter wary about her intentions when the mission went wrong.

Following Warren Stocker, Peter arrived in New York and tried to use his connection with his son to get to him. If this action of Peter’s seems uncharacteristic, then I should mention that the more Peter  adapts to the spy life, the more he loses touch with his inner, humane self—and this has been highlighted on a number of occasions throughout the second season. Anyway, the mysterious buyer gets Rose involved in this mess as well by informing her that Peter has gone missing following a botched mission and might be in danger. Rose was trying to make a career programming facial recognition software, which she uses to narrow down her search for Peter, and eventually Catherine becomes aware of her pursuit, even though she doesn’t approve of Rose getting involved with Night Action investigations. Peter and Rose finally reunite as Peter chases down Stocker, and the duo barely manage to escape from the crew of the mysterious buyer. Following an interrogation session by Peter, Stocker reveals that he shared intel about a secretive but now defunct CIA chemical weapon program named Foxglove, however, before he is able to share much, the buyer’s crew shoots Stocker dead. Catherine rescues Rose from the buyer’s crew, and after meeting Peter, implores him to play by the book and follow her command.

Foxglove and its Connection to the Bala Family: What Was Viktor’s Plan?

The Foxglove program was created by the CIA as a means to prepare for chemical warfare, and aimed to create extremely potent poisonous compounds with the intention of creating an antidote against them. KX was one of the compounds that was created as part of the Foxglove program before it was shut down for good, as the risk of it being used for malevolent purposes was too high.

The buyer, who is later revealed to be former US Marine Solomon Vega, was working for an influential and enigmatic information broker, Jacob Monroe, who likes to have leverage over the who’s who in world politics through his expansive intel network. Monroe had helped Vega in a personal crisis, locating the man who was involved in the hit-and-run incident that left Vega’s sister, Celeste, a paraplegic—and ever since, Vega started working for Monroe.

As the story unfolds, Vega is revealed to have bought the intel on Foxglove to deliver it to Viktor Bala, a former dictator (nation unrevealed), who a decade ago had used compounds from the program to massacre protestors in his regime. Even though someone from US intelligence had leaked the intel on Foxglove back then to Viktor, after the dictator got charged with war crimes, the UN covered up the role the US had played in this mess. Now a captive at The Hague for the last several years, Viktor Bala plans to use KX on US soil, at UN headquarters—to give them a taste of their own medicine. Viktor’s loyal accomplice, his nephew Markus, ardently followed the orders he issued from prison—arranging a mobile lab, stealing chemicals, and whatnot. Viktor’s own son, Tomas, wanted nothing to do with the diabolical plans of his father and, with his wife Sloane, wanted to build a life far away from the reach of his dastardly family lineage. However, Tomas eventually gets himself involved in Viktor’s plan in a desperate attempt to prove himself to his father.

Why Did Noor Leak Confidential Intel Involving Her Country?

The second season of The Night Agent introduces Noor, aide to Abbas, the Iranian ambassador to the US, and she has witnessed first-hand the horrors of the autocratic Iranian regime. Noor wants to bring her brother, Farhad, and their mother, Azita, to the US and to seek asylum for her family. Noor decides to seek help from the CIA, sharing high-value intel in exchange. Noor also befriends and grows closer to the chief of security at the Iranian embassy, Javad, and it is later revealed Abbas and Javad have their own agenda with Monroe, as they have been assigned by the Iranian regime to get information on political dissidents from the country who have sought shelter across Europe. Even though Abbas’ own daughter, who has been actively vocal about the tyrannical ways of the regime, is in danger if the list of dissidents reaches the Iranian government, he doesn’t dare to oppose Javad.

Javad and Abbas obtain the list of dissidents from Vega, which he in turn gained from French intelligence agency DGSE defector, Jacqueline. As Noor learns about the exchange and shares it with her contact at the CIA, she  inadvertently gets connected with Peter, Catherine, and Rose, as they were on Vega’s tail already. Noor arranges a way for Peter and Rose to infiltrate the Iranian embassy during a party and obtain the intel—not knowing it doesn’t contain information about Foxglove, and instead is the list of dissidents. During the mission, Javad is able to catch on to Peter’s ruse, but Peter manages to escape anyway, and the images of the files containing the intel are captured on Noor’s phone. Noor refuses to share the intel unless Peter and co. fulfill their side of the bargain, which prompts Catherine to send another Night Agent, Sami Saiad, to extract Farhad and Azita from Iran.

However, things go awry after Noor’s brother gets into an unnecessary argument with Sami, which leads to a series of troubling events and culminates in Farhan’s death at Sami’s hands. Sami takes Azita with him and decides to fulfill the mission anyway, and despite knowing the truth, Peter initially keeps it from Noor to get the intel. Rose’s moral compass has not been shaken yet, which is why she continues to feel pangs of guilt, and later on, as Noor learns the truth from the Iranian embassy, Rose reveals the truth to her. Javad figures out Noor’s past actions of leaking intel to Americans and threatens to send her back to Iran, but Noor manages to cut a deal with him by offering to hand Peter over to him. However, after Peter shows his remorse and provides proof that Azita has safely reached the States, Noor decides to double-cross Javad as Peter manages to escape from him.

Later on, Noor manages to convince Abbas to hand the list over to her for the sake of his daughter’s well-being, and she delivers it to a French delegate in the UN—effectively saving the Iranian immigrants settled in Europe. Abbas throws Javad under the bus by framing him as the source of the leak, and Noor’s close friends, who were interrogated and threatened by Javad, corroborate his statement.

Why Did Peter Cut a Deal with Monroe?

Bala’s crew, led by Markus and Tomas, set their plan in motion by stealing the chemical compounds necessary to create KX. Catherine and Peter had managed to capture Vega, as Catherine had met with and coerced Jacqueline to take her to him, posing as a potential leaker. However, things went south as, suspecting foul play, Vega killed Jacqueline and nearly killed Catherine until Peter’s timely arrival saved her life. As Peter interrogated Vega, Catherine left to assess the situation regarding the rampage created by Bala’s terrorist crew, and Rose decided to meet the lead scientist behind the Foxglove program, Professor Wilfred Cole, to get some idea about what Bala’s crew is planning. However, Markus and co. break into Cole’s house and abduct Rose and the professor, along with his family. The terrorists force Cole and Rose to prepare KX, and Peter—who was on comms—realizes Catherine has no way to save Rose, and so far they haven’t found any lead to stop the crisis situation regarding Foxclove. In his utter desperation, Peter decides to break Vega free and meet with Monroe, who is willing to share the intel regarding Rose’s location and the terrorist plot for the right price. Peter needs to bring a specific case file from the UN Secretary General, which he is able to do with Noor’s help. However, by doing so, Peter becomes a fugitive by breaking a series of regulations—much to Catherine’s dismay, as she had just begun to trust this novice Night Agent and appreciate his skills. It should be mentioned that Catherine kills Vega following a scuffle in a parking lot by impaling him on a pipe. Peter delivers the case file to Monroe, and unfortunately this one action of his makes Peter bound to Monroe—and he is expected to return the favor for him whenever Monroe requires. Like father, like son—after all, Peter’s old man had leaked intel to foreign intelligence, and now Peter is unwittingly following in his father’s footsteps.

On the other hand, Rose tries to appeal to Tomas’ better judgment to convince him to stop the terrorism plot before it’s too late, but Tomas gets murdered by Markus using the same compound he is planning to release in the UN headquarters the next day. By the time Peter arrives to rescue Rose and the professor’s family, Markus and his crew have already left with fifteen canisters filled with KX. After learning about Markus’ plan, Peter calls for a temporary truce with Catherine and agrees to face judgment for his actions once they have averted the crisis. Markus’ plan fails miserably, and, leading a bomb squad and a group of marines, Catherine and Peter manage to neutralize the situation at the UN. As a last-ditch attempt to fulfill Viktor’s wish, Markus holds Tomas’ wife, Sloane, captive, and tries to use the chemical on the building where she resides, but after killing Markus, Peter is able to take care of the final canister as well—thanks to Rose’s quick-wittedness.

However, after all is said and done, Peter surrenders himself to Catherine and is prepared to face the repercussions of his actions. Knowing that being associated with him is already proving detrimental to Rose’s life, Peter asks her to break off their relationship and lead a happy life away from this troublesome mess. Even though Rose still loves and cares for Peter, she agrees to follow his advice, but fans already know that they will be back together in the third season anyway.

Noor gets the life she desired, as her mother gets asylum from the States government along with full citizenship. However, it remains unknown whether she will be safe after how her actions put a dent in the regime’s dastardly plans and whether Javad will return to get his revenge in the third season. Farhad’s passing will continue to torment Noor, but honestly speaking, the teenager was himself responsible for whatever happened to him. For now, Noor seems happy, and she meets up with Rose weeks later, and the duo share a meal in peace.

What Was The Intel Peter Shared With Jacob Monroe?

In the final moments of the second season of The Night Agent, the full extent of Monroe’s plans comes to be known with the revelation of the contents of the case file Peter had delivered to him. It had incriminating information on Knox, the presidential candidate who had the highest chance of winning the poll, but now as Monroe delivers this intel to Hagan, his old friend and Knox’s opponent, the information broker essentially manipulates the presidential election according to his whim. Knox withdraws his candidacy, resulting in Hagan’s sure shot win—and what’s worse is Monroe will now have control over one of the most powerful persons (arguably) on the planet. Agent Chelsea is seen present as Hagan’s security, which indicates she might return to play a bigger role in the third season. Monroe will have limitless power with all the intel at his disposal, something Catherine and Peter realize way too late as Peter is released from custody.

Knowing that Monroe will ask Peter, his biggest asset, given he is a Night Agent, to pull some favors in the near future, Catherine asks Peter to win the intel broker’s trust and then go on to infiltrate and exterminate. Having Peter inside Monroe’s circle of trust is the only way for Catherine to ensure President Hagan does not end up selling the country to Monroe and his bidders. It will also be a chance for Peter to prove his mettle and make amends for his past actions, which nearly jeopardized the agency itself. Hagan, being an egotistical, crooked politician, will try to undermine Monroe’s control—as hinted during the final moments of their interaction—and Peter, Rose, and Catherine have to work their way through and bypass a lot of red tape and regulations to get things done in the third season.
