Despite having its roots in the individual worldview, experiences, and memories, dreams tend to be the common gateway to the world of the unknown at the same time. Building its fascinating realms upon repressed trauma, desires, emotions, and dark recesses of the human psyche—it almost seems there’s a separate dimension where dreams and nightmares reign supreme. With the intention to find a cosmic connection to the world of dreaming, Jake Emanuel and Willie Block had created the thriller podcast series The Edge of Sleep, with Youtuber Markiplier playing the lead. The podcast gained immense popularity in no time, resulting in multiple adaptations in the form of novels and a recently released six-episode miniseries, which is streaming on Amazon Prime.Â
As a thriller series that combines psychological intrigue and metaphysical dread, The Edge of Sleep fares brilliantly, drawing upon several elements from world mythology and iconographies to provide a familiar shape to the unknown world of dreams. In doing so, the series presents a commentary on the human condition under the whims of the cosmic unknown.
Spoilers Ahead
Dave’s Dreadful Dreams
As The Edge of Sleep begins, the narrative focus remains fixated on Dave Torres, a night watchman suffering from parasomnia whose condition prompts him to spend several sleepless nights at a stretch. Since a young age, Dave has been tormented by night terrors, as he experienced lucid dreams where he often confronted archaic beings. In his nightmares, Dave sees a cult, which he dubs the Dream People, and a telepathic whale, who warns him of an elephant monster, a grotesque, vicious creature that has been haunting him in his dreams since a young age. A dark triangle often appeared in Dave’s nightmares as an ominous sign some connection to the elephant monster. It is revealed that during Dave’s childhood, a certain Dr. Castaneda tried to help Dave through his experimental Dream Chamber, but the elephant monster’s presence in Dave’s nightmares prompted him to unwittingly kill the doctor. The trauma of the incident, coupled with his strange condition and fear of judgment, resulted in Dave growing withdrawn, shutting himself off from the rest of the world. At present, after beginning a relationship with Katie, Dave had felt his afflictions fading away, but just like Katie’s troubling history of substance abuse, Dave’s condition eventually relapses. Katie once saw Dave engraving the triangle symbol on his body while in a trance-like state, but after returning back to normalcy, Dave refused to share a word about the incident with her. The distance and air of mistrust between the duo ended their relationship, and in the present timeline, Dave is still reeling from the pain of separation with Katie.Â
Sleep Pandemic
Dave’s colleague/good friend, Matteo, an air force veteran, is sympathetic towards his condition and wants to help him move on by encouraging him to socialize. However, as the duo go to a party hosted by their friends, they find out everyone to have died under unknown circumstances. Matteo and Dave rush a couple of their friends to nearby Santa Mira hospital, where they meet Linda, an overworked nurse over the edge who reveals they have inexplicably lost multiple patients within the night shift—and seemingly the entire town has been affected by whatever is causing this situation. After witnessing people dying right in front of them while dozing off, Dave, Matteo, and Linda become convinced that a sleep epidemic has emerged for unknown reasons. After failing to warn Katie over the phone to not fall asleep, Dave rushes off to her residence, while Matteo and Linda go to the local midnight radio station to do the same to warn the townsfolk, asking them to gather at the Santa Mira hospital. Dave brings Katie up to speed on the horrors of the present situation and takes her to the hospital.
Linda, who is revealed to be hiding her true identity as a former neurologist in a high-end pharmaceutical company, decides to pry open the brain of a cadaver to understand precisely what is triggering the sleep-death situation, only to find the overheated brain of the cadaver with a triangle engraved upon it. This is especially traumatic for Dave, who is quick to notice the common pattern in his own afflictions and the present situation—realizing that the root cause in both cases might be the same. It should be mentioned at this point that Modafalyst, a highly marketed drug that induces insomnia, comes in handy as the group takes the pills to stay awake. Ruth, an elderly acquaintance of Katie admitted in the hospital who couldn’t sleep due to her ailment learns about the ongoing pandemic and volunteers to undergo a brain scan while falling to the sleep-death condition—to help the survivors learn more about the nature of the sickness. Ruth succumbs to death after falling asleep, and from her brain scans, Linda learns that the victims are dying in their dreams.
Dreaming for Answers
The revelation draws further connection with Dave’s afflictions, as it seems that this is the moment he was waiting for all his life, which can truly exemplify his purpose. Dave has struggled to cope with his dream-afflictions, and now the answer to the sleep pandemic lies within one’s dreams —which is why Dave volunteers to sleep and dream within the exact period of time when the death trigger gets activated. It is a risky ordeal, but knowing they have no other option to consider at the present, the rest of the group begrudgingly agrees to let Dave dream. Inside his dreamscape, a chained-down Dave meets his mother, who is revealed to be a projection created by the elephant monster to manipulate Dave’s mind. The dark triangle symbol is once again highlighted, which is associated with the monster’s control. Dave is approached by one of the Dream People, who instructs him to visit the land of Aristera to save himself from the clutches of the elephant monster, and finds answers to the present scenario.Â
Did Dave Find Dream People At The End?
Dave convinces the group to visit the island of Aristera, and Matteo being an air force veteran, the option of flying to the island in a private jet seems to be a feasible option. Almost everyone in the group had a purpose to serve—Linda’s research revealed the disturbing truth of the sleep pandemic, Dave’s dream afflictions resulted in him finding a possible solution to the crisis, and now even Matteo’s skills prove to be useful for the group as they venture towards the island. Katie sticks as the odd one out; perhaps that’s why she is the one to succumb to the sleep pandemic as sleep deprivation takes a hold on her mind, and Linda isn’t able to help her in any way, much to Dave’s agony. For what its worth, Dave and Katie had managed to reconcile with each other before leaving for the island.
Dave and co. crash land near the island and swim to the shores, and just as it seems that Dave is guiding them in the right direction, the elephant monster appears to put a psychic vice grip on the minds of the survivors. Dave is tormented by visions of a deceased Katie. As the monster tries to use his insecurities and his guilt of not being able to save Katie to mentally weaken him, Dave manages to overcome the creature’s influence to truly become free. After awakening from their nightmarish experience at the hands of the Lovecraftian monster, Dave and co. are invited to a monolithic-pyramid structure—the establishment of the Order of the Dream People—where Dave meets Safet, the member of the cult from his dream who instructed him to visit Aristera. Dave meets a number of people in the establishment, hailing from all around the world, who shared his condition and were able to survive thanks to the Dream People psychically guiding them. Safet reveals that their ancient order were guided by the cosmic whale—probably a primordial creation deity—who instructed the cult to create a stronghold on the island and form a telepathic barrier around it to guard against the elephant monster. Safet further reveals that the elephant monster, or as he calls him, the Beast, is a nightmarish creature that takes on different forms for its victims and is the one responsible for the vicious sleep pandemic that claimed the lives of the majority of the human populace. However, a chosen few like Dave, who have broken free from the Beast’s hold, were able to emerge stronger and are going to play a crucial role in the upcoming conflict for the fate of the world. Dave shares his concerns about whether this reality he is experiencing is part of a fantasy-like dream as well, but Safet reveals it to be very real by revealing how the order has witnessed Dave struggle throughout his life to beat the destructive influence of the Beast.
As Dave and his friends find refuge with the Order of the Dream People, the Beast awakens its fallen victims, reanimating them as his thralls with the ominous triangle in their eyes—among whom Ruth and Katie are seen to be present as well. The Edge of Sleep ends by hinting that an all-out conflict between the forces of dreamscape will be highlighted in the continuation, and the fact that Dave and his friends will have to face people close to them as their adversaries makes this ordeal an intriguing one.Â
