The sixth season of The Dragon Prince has turned out to be the animated series’ darkest, most reflective chapter so far. And in a number of ways, The Dragon Prince season 6’s ending has set the stage for the final arc of the overarching saga. The harrowing fate of Katolis will surely disrupt the existing hard-earned alliance among humans and the rest of Xadia’s denizens; Aaravos’ return will complicate things further; and Ezran and his friends are going to have the toughest time finding a way to restore peace amidst this mess. At the end, it will boil down to the question of legacies—whether the new generation can guide the world down a better path despite experiencing the worst, or are they doomed to repeat the cycle of violence by following in the footsteps of their parents? Callum, Rayla, Soren, Claudia, and Ezran—all the major characters are going to feel conflicted between choosing to do the right thing or becoming victims of circumstance, as the seventh season marks the culmination of the narrative.
Spoilers Ahead
What Does Fate Hold in Store For Soren And Claudia?
I think series viewers will agree with the fact that Viren’s children, Soren and Claudia, are more interesting as characters compared to Callum and Rayla, the lead duo of the series. While Viren’s negative influence as a dark mage led his daughter, Claudia, astray, Soren—his neglected, simpleton son—turned his back on his family after getting directed by his conscience and better judgment. The situation is a lot like Azula and Zuko’s, but Claudia is a more layered character than Azula. From the way the sixth season ended, how the future shapes up for the sibling duo remains to be seen. After Viren left Claudia to do penance for his past sins, he truly became a changed person and spent his last few days agonizing in remorse and guilt. Claudia felt purposeless for a certain time, when her boyfriend Terry became the most supportive presence she could have ever asked for, and finally she made up her mind to see her father one last time to decide whether she should quit dark magic for good and turn a new page in her life. Unfortunately, she arrives after the fall of Katolis, when Viren has breathed his last, and Aaravos exploits Claudia’s troubled emotional state to make her a puppet of his own, ensuring his release from his prison. Had Claudia known how much her father had begun to abhor dark magic in his last days, she probably would have resorted to a better path. It seems that it is too late for her to turn to the other side, as in the seventh season we will see her as Aaravos’ accomplice—but who knows, perhaps a redemption arc is on the cards for Claudia.
Similarly, on the other hand, Soren despised his father after seeing his true nature, and he knows that even without the influence of Aaravos, Viren’s devotion to power had started corrupting his mind. Soren used to adhere to his father’s command unquestionably, even if it didn’t fit with his moral code, but the moment he found out that Viren had reached a point of no return, he turned his back for good. Interestingly, during the fall of Katolis, it is Soren who asks his father to once again use dark magic to save the people of the kingdom from Sol Regem’s wrath, and Viren’s sacrifice might have allowed Soren to grow a sense of respect for his late father. All in all, it seems that the seventh season will pit Claudia and Soren against each other, and their ideologies and worldviews will clash as well.
Ezran’s Plight as a King: An Inevitable War in Xadia
The young King Ezran stood out as an exceptional character through the series as his wit, humanistic approach, a strong moral compass, pragmatism, and pacifist perspective brought peace to the land of Xadia by unifying humans, elves, and dragons. The progress attained by Ezran’s noble effort is on the verge of being thwarted as Aaravos-controlled Sunfire mage, Pharos, led sun archdragon Sol Regem into destroying the human kingdom of Katolis. Ezran tried to break the cycle of violence, and honoring the last wishes of his father, he tried to re-mould Xandia on the foundation of love, trying to negotiate peace with even the worst discriminatory minds. Unfortunately, the fall of Katolis has undone his efforts, and the tragic aftermath of this incident will most probably lead to the human pentarchy calling for an all-out war against dragons and elves. Similarly, the newlywed couple—Sunfire Elf Queen Janai and Katolis General Arya—are going to find themselves at a strange crossroads, where they either have to choose each other or honor their allegiance to their people. This presents a really interesting dichotomy for the final season, and as fans, we cannot wait to see the entire scenario unfold.
Will Callum Succumb To The Dark Side?
The sixth season veered heavily towards Callum’s struggle with an inherent darker side of his, as he fears his usage of dark magic (although he’s used it only twice) will allow Aaravos to take control of his mind and soul. To overcome this feeling and get rid of the darker self, he underwent the Star-Truth ritual in Star Scraper, which allowed him a much-needed sense of closure as he rekindled his relationship with Rayla. However, enough foreshadowing has been provided through the last couple of seasons to suggest that Callum might be forced to choose using dark magic once again to save Rayla or his close ones, and Rayla might have to make a crucial decision at that juncture—whether to kill the love of her life or not. With Xandia gearing up for an all-out war, some tough decisions need to be made, and the lead duo of the series have to lead by examples if they want to save the world from Aaravos’ menacing gaze.
Zubeia’s Assistance, Timeblind Kosmo, and Kpp’Ar’s Return
With the relationship between humans and dragons once again on the verge of collapse, the Queen of Dragons Zubeia will play a pivotal role in the final season. She has aided Ezran constantly to form an alliance with the dragons and shares his noble belief of coexistence as well. Who knows, her new allies, the Mushroom Mage and his Mushpals, might help to de-escalate the impending war situation as well.
The Celestial Elf Kosmo, who gained transcendence in the sixth season and became time blind, might play a key role in the final season of The Dragon Prince. Kosmo had displayed the ability to literally go back in time to change the course of events and rewrite history anew, and this unique ability will come in handy when Zym and co. battle Aaravos, the near omnipotent godly elf. Finally, Viren’s former mentor, who possessed Aaravos’ Staff of Ziard and is currently soul trapped in a coin, can prove to be a wild card in final conflict, given his knowledge and usage of dark magic is superior to that of his student. To sum it up, The Dragon Prince is moving towards a really exciting and eventful final season as the heroes face a crisis that can change the world of Xadia forever.
