Who was murdered in Prescott?
The story began in the small town of Prescott. It was a small community that had people from different strata living in close proximity to each other. One of the most popular people in town was Ms. Marian Weston, an elderly lady whose family lived in this for decades. She was revered by everyone for her kindness and generosity. Abigail, a true crime podcaster, was back in Prescott, her hometown, after going through a painful divorce. She had grown up next to Ms. Weston’s home. Abigail was also mesmerized by an estate named Bancroft and now she was able to afford and hence purchased it. The first season of her podcast was successful, and the money earned from that success helped her buy the Bancroft home. Abigail’s sister Sophia and her grandfather, a church pastor, lived nearby.
Just like the whole town, Abigail was fond of Ms. Weston. Both had a heartfelt conversation about her love for gardening. On that particular day, Ms. Weston mentioned not having gloves to work on her plants. Sadly, Ms. Weston was found dead by the neighbor/librarian Penny, and the whole town was in shock. Abigail found a discarded gardening glove near the toppled-over flowerpot. She informed her friend Matt Macadams, a local police officer, that Ms. Weston never had a gardening glove, which according to her indicates someone came into the house and killed her.Â
Who were the suspects?
Abigail and the whole town were surprised to come across Theo and Cammie, Ms. Weston’s long-lost son and his wife. Abigail’s research into Ms. Weston helped her find out the lady had a piece of the Weston Railway Fortune and was worth 23 million USD. This helped her deduce the motive behind Ms. Weston’s death, which she assumed was murder. Abigail had a lamp given to her by the deceased Ms. Weston, which had bible verses on the bottom of it. She found another one of these lamps in Ms. Weston’s home and wanted to find the connection between the two.Â
Theo and his wife’s weird interaction with her and the neighbors made her suspect them. She trespassed into Ms.’ Weston’s home, which now technically belonged to Theo, too many times to find clues. She found a crumbled visiting card, and she assumed it was a lead. She shared these details with Matt, but still, it wasn’t strong enough evidence to arrest Theo and his wife. There was a rumor that Ms. Weston had been having an affair with John Gray, a car mechanic who owned a garage. On confronting John about Ms. Weston, he overreacted and asked Abigail to leave his premises. Abigail and Matt treated John as a suspect because Ms. Weston was rich.Â
Abigail also found a note with bible verses that had spoons and oil mentioned. She connected the verses to clues that could be found in Ms. Weston’s kitchen, but Matt could not let her break the rules repeatedly. Around the same time, Abigail’s faith in God was slowly being restore as she was working with the bible verses on the notes left by Ms. Weston. To her, these verses were a godsend to let her know Ms. Weston’s death was indeed a murder. Matt was looking for hardcore evidence as he believed her death cannot be treated as murder just because Marian left some notes.Â
Did Abigail find out who killed Miss Weston?
Abigail’s boss was on the verge of shutting down the podcast as the material developed by her was not helping the second season get the expected numbers. She requested to use Ms. Weston’s case as the subject, as Abigail was sure it was a homicide. Since Ms. Weston was very close to Abigail and her family growing up, she felt she owed it to the woman who hadn’t flaunted her family money most of her life. Abigail’s motives behind finding out if the death was a murder could be selfish, as she needed material for her true crime podcast. She was sure her boss would like it, but since the case was headed towards a dead end, just like Matt stated, there was nothing they had except for the bible verses left by Ms. Weston.Â
Abigail wanted to get to the bottom of the matter even though John Gray was arrested as he was found near Ms. Weston’s home. Matt and the rest of the town assumed this was the end of the investigation, as the culprit was Ms. Weston’s lover. Everyone assumed he was a gold digger who was after Ms. Weston’s money. Matt had also politely asked Abigail not to further investigate the matter as the culprit had already been found. She was adamant someone else was the culprit because of the notes left by Ms. Weston. She needed a proper conclusion for her podcast as well, but since there wasn’t one, she was fired. Even though Abigail tried to save her job, her words stood no chance with her boss, and as a result, she was out of work.
Abigail was still pondering about the case when she asked Penny, the librarian, about the crumbled visiting card. Penny was quick to recognize the card and let her know about a ruthless attorney named Rebecca Gardner who was known for duping her clients. Rebbecca was a character who hadn’t been mentioned so far by the makers. Introducing her out of nowhere as a possible suspect was a lazy move. Abigail believed Rebecca may have been Ms. Westin’s attorney taking care of the estate, and some clash between them may have occurred. This was a plausible scenario, but the lack of evidence would not help Matt.Â
The Abigail Broukes Mysteries ended with Abigail finding the key to the chicken coop from the clothes meant for donation to the church. Theo had mentioned the coop was locked and he was unable to open it. Abigail was quick to deduce the coop contained something that Ms. Weston was not willing to share with anyone else. On reaching Ms. Weston’s home, Abigail found a will inside the chicken coop, and moments later she was attacked by Theo. This chicken coop revelation came out of nowhere, as it was only mentioned once in the film. Ms. Weston’s will had also not been mentioned in the show so far, and the makers simply assumed the audience would know of its existence since the old lady was rich. Theo and Rebecca were planning to harm Abigail by forcing her to mention the location of the changed will. Cammie, Theo’s supposed wife, was Rebecca, the thug lawyer. She’d changed her name and identity to avoid any suspicion in the town she was known for. Penny, the librarian, had immense knowledge of Rebecca, but she wasn’t aware of how she looked, which was odd. Matt rescued Abigail from being tortured. Theo and Rebecca were finally arrested. Abigail had left a message to Matt on finding out about the chicken coop key, which may have helped him locate her. Abigail’s instincts about Theo and his wife were correct, even though there wasn’t any major giveaway about them in the beginning.Â
The epilogue of The Abigail Broukes Mysteries had Abigail finishing her podcast with the help of Matt. Since Matt was a police officer who knew the nitty gritties of Ms. Weston’s murder case, it was the perfect idea to bring him on as a co-host who added some expert opinion. Abigail and Matt revealed that Ms. Weston was tired of Rebecca’s work as an estate lawyer, and had begun to wonder if she was misappropriating her funds. Ms. Weston also got in touch with her son, but Rebecca began to intercept the letters to find out what her client was up to. There was Rebecca’s boyfriend, who agreed to be Theo and ended up poisoning the old lady for money. Since they couldn’t find the updated will, both became flustered, made mistakes, and hence were caught. This was a classic case of a seemingly perfect murder, but on looking carefully around, there were clues. From a viewer’s point of view, this was the lamest way to find out two people who claimed to be Ms. Weston’s son and daughter-in-law were con artists. The podcast also revealed that the town managed to track down the real Theo, and he was asked to come to the town of Prescott. Abigail was given a chance by her ex-boss to consider restarting her work with them, but she declined. She wanted to carry out more faith-based shows after having reconnected with her religion years later. Abigail had a clean divorce, and that could be the reason why she chose to follow faith over working on true crime subjects. This jump was random and unnecessary, and there was no clarity on what exactly was Abigail’s future plan.
