‘Suicide Squad Isekai’ Ending Explained: What To Expect From Season 2?

DC’s first anime series, Suicide Squad Isekai, concluded its first season in epic, dramatic fashion as the titular team took on mystical threats in a fantastical realm as part of their directive. The ragtag bunch of villains saved the day at the end through their teamwork, but their mission is still not over, as highlighted Suicide Squad Isekai’s ending of Season 1. There is a not-so-surprising twist at the end, which opens up new yet familiar challenges for the squad to face in the future and, at the same time, presents a new possibility for the continuation of Harley Quinn’s character arc in the second season of the series.

Spoilers Ahead

Is The Undead King Finally Gone For Good?

The Undead King, a powerful necromancer god with extreme magical abilities, turned out to be the prime antagonist of Suicide Squad Isekai, who assumed the position of Queen Aldora of the Kingdom after killing her and taking her guise to hide her own true identity and motivation. The Undead King thrived on death and sorrow, which is why she orchestrated the conflict between Queen and the Emperor in the first place and created a trail of devastation as a result—until the Suicide Squad appeared from another dimension and stopped the perennial cycle of war. After banishing the squad and taking one of their members, King Shark, into custody, the Undead King ensured the elimination of every form of resistance in her way and tried to turn the Kingdom into a valley of death by raising undead creatures. However, Princess Fione turns out to be the first impediment in her plan as she decides to come out of her meek, reserved, pliant demeanor and rises against the Undead King with the help of Cecile. Eventually, the squad assists the princess, and Enchantress, who was forced to comply with King’s commands thus far, turns on her as well. During the climactic showdown, Fione and Harley promptly dispatch the Undead King to the afterlife, banishing her from the Kingdom forever.

With her mother gone, now Fione is the Queen of the Kingdom, and being the kind person she was, Fione will try to ensure that peace among humans and other species—elves, beastmen, orcs, goblins—which remained ruptured for so long due to the Undead King’s machinations, gets restored. Hopefully, she will continue to act as a noble ally to the squad as well, given how their help was pivotal in bringing peace to the Kingdom.

Joker As The Main Villain In The Next Season

As if the Undead King identity switcheroo wasn’t enough of a twist, during the final moments of the first season it was revealed that not only had Joker arrived in this fantasy dimension as well, he had also gained some sort of powerful magical sceptre, which allowed him to change his appearance to that of Katana’s. All the time Suicide Squad had clashed with Katana in the fantasy land, it was Joker in disguise—who had manipulated all the events from the beginning. Joker had killed the Emperor and assumed his position and manipulated the Undead King and Flag’s former crew—Ratcatcher, Thinker, and Croc—to plunge the Kingdom into warfare and chaos. Ultimately, Joker’s plan failed, and with all of his accomplices gone, the Clown Prince of Crime will need to seek alternatives in the second season. This is where things get interesting, as Harley still doesn’t know that her dear boyfriend orchestrated the crisis at hand and wants to return to her reality to reunite with him at long last. Her present role as the savior of the Kingdom might have accorded her the status of a hero, but what if she eventually wants to ally herself with her boyfriend later on, given how easily Joker can manipulate her? Harley’s allegiance will be put to the test in the second season, as she will have to make a tough choice between her beloved and her new friends. With all the ruckus going on inside the dimension, we are hoping for a cameo by superheroes like Superman or Flash, which will add to the world-building as well.

Waller’s Endgame

Despite keeping their end of the bargain by aiding the Kingdom and gaining intel, members of the Suicide Squad are not really safe from the cunning, ruthless, vile mind of A.R.G.U.S. chief Amanda Waller, who has been calling the shots from the beginning and doesn’t hesitate to put her expendable task force into their place whenever she deems necessary. The squad’s primary goal was to do a recon mission, as Waller seeks to gain resources from the fantasy dimension to sustain her reality—and aiding the Kingdom to attain peace is just a ploy for the long game she is playing. Gaining trust in the Kingdom to weaken them from within and take control over their land falls right up the alley of Waller’s diabolical schemes, and the second season might highlight Waller sending a new task force to ensure the success of her heinous plan. Rick Flag, always the righteous good Samaritan, always considering himself to be above the criminal scums of the squad, is still aiding Waller covertly even after witnessing how disposable she considers others to be. This could lead to the squad coming into conflict with Flag, who will have to choose between his sense of morality and professional responsibilities.

Lastly, with the high fantasy sword and sorcery background, the scope of expansion is immense, and the second season could build on the larger settings by integrating superhero and fantasy genres further. There is a chance for alternate reality versions of characters appearing as well, just like how Harley and Fione shared a certain likeness in their appearance and character growth in the first season.
