Watching Savi felt like a bit of a letdown. The script seemed off and the pacing was slow. I found myself longing for those heart-pounding moments, especially during the prison break scenes. I was hoping for more of a thrill. Abhinay Deo’s Savi centers around a desperate housewife, Savitri Sachdeva, who goes to extreme lengths to free her husband from prison. Savitri, or Savi, is madly in love with her husband, Nakul. When Nakul is wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, Savi’s world is shattered. She can’t believe that her loving husband could ever commit such a crime. Savi believed in Nakul’s innocence when nobody else did, and Savi decided to take drastic measures. For the sake of her son, Adi, and the life they once had, she seeks help from Joydeep, an ex-con who previously managed a daring prison escape. Despite having no experience with crime, Savi dives into a world of theft, forgery, and even murder. The big question is: Will Savi’s risky plan to break Nakul out of prison succeed? Will they be reunited as a family? And what fate awaits Joydeep, the man who helps her in this dangerous mission?

Why was Nakul arrested?

Nakul Sachdeva, Savi Sachdeva, and their son Adi were a beautiful, happy little family. We see them living in Liverpool, far from their homeland, India. Nakul worked as a construction engineer, while Savi was a devoted housewife who took care of their family. But Nakul hadn’t always been this way. When they first met, he was an angry mafia fighter, always causing chaos. Savi changed him for the better, and they created this peaceful, loving life together. However, not everything was perfect. Nakul often faced humiliation and borderline racism from his boss, Stefanie Fowler, whenever something went wrong at work. She even told him to go back to India as if he did not belong there. Savi knew all about it, but they understood how important this job was. So, Nakul continued working there for the sake of his family.

One normal day as such, while Nakul was getting ready for work and Savi was about to take Adi to school, the police stormed into their house and arrested Nakul for the murder of Stefanie. Everyone was shocked. Savi knew Nakul couldn’t have done it. He might have gotten angry and frustrated, but murder? That wasn’t him. He had left his mafia days behind, and it just didn’t seem possible. But while Savi saw the matter through the eyes of a loving wife, the authorities did not. On the night Stefanie was murdered, Nakul was coming home and bumped into someone. His coat button dropped there, and it turned out to be a robbery gone wrong where the real culprit killed Stefanie and took her purse. Nakul tried to tell the authorities to search for his button on the road, but it had rained that night, which washed away any evidence. Despite Savi begging the authorities to investigate more, they saw Nakul’s deep-seated hatred for his boss as a motive. They thought maybe he had staged the scene to look like a robbery gone wrong. With no evidence to prove otherwise, Nakul was locked up in Shrewsbury Prison with a life sentence. So, that’s how their peaceful life got turned upside down. And then, Savi had to figure out how to clear Nakul’s name and bring him back home to their little family.

Why did Savi ask for Joydeep’s help?

Savi realized that she wouldn’t find help from the authorities or even from friends—all had turned their backs on them. Meanwhile, she learned that Nakul had been beaten badly by someone in prison after he refused to hide drugs in his cell. Even though that group was sent to solitary, they would eventually come out and threaten Nakul’s life again. Savi couldn’t bear the fact that her husband was locked up in prison for a crime he didn’t commit and was being tormented on a daily basis like this. That’s why she thought of a drastic plan: a prison break. She felt it was the only way to save her husband. She started reading books, searching on Google, and eventually came across the name of Joydeep Paul, who had written an autobiography about how he escaped prison. Coincidentally, he lived in Liverpool as well. Savi thought he would be the perfect person to ask for help, given his firsthand experience. When she went to meet him, he was initially reluctant to talk to her. Maybe he was busy writing his new book. Maybe he was trying to hide from her at first, but eventually he met her, as he felt her desperation and shared his story. He had been sent to prison for counterfeiting paintings, old antiques, and smuggling contraband, sentenced to three years, but managed to escape and later surrendered. Joydeep told her that if she really wanted to get Nakul out of prison, she needed enough money, the will to kill if necessary, and forged documents to disguise themselves after the escape. Joydeep became a beacon of hope for Savi. She knew nothing about handling such things but, with his help, she falsified their documents and eventually sold their house to gather enough money. She did it all to make sure her husband could be saved. Joydeep, taking on different disguises and hiding his real identity as an ex-con, helped her throughout this journey.

Was their mission successful?

Savi changed into a different person altogether. She realized she had to be desperate and brave enough to face the obstacles ahead. When she saw that she wasn’t getting enough money from selling the house, she knew she had to steal it. So, she decided to threaten a couple of drug dealers named Rox and Jason to take their black money. She held them at gunpoint and demanded the money, but when they refused, a gunfight erupted. Jason started shooting, and in the chaos, Savi managed to grab the bag of money and tried to hide. Jason shot Rox to death, and when Savi went to help Rox, she ended up shooting Jason in self-defense. She tried to help Rox, but he eventually died on the road. Savi dumped his body by the riverside and fled to save herself. The problem was that the police eventually picked up her trail after this incident and realized Savi was up to something. They discovered she had forged her husband’s medical condition, claiming he had severe hyperkalemia. The prison authorities took Nakul to the hospital for a check-up, and Savi thought this was the perfect time to get him out. But the police had already reached the hospital and were about to take them both into custody for attempting a prison break. Thankfully, they managed to escape from the hospital. Meanwhile, Joydeep brought Adi to them, and together, they all took a ferry and moved to Bulgaria, beyond the jurisdiction of the authorities. In the end, their mission was successful.

Why Was Joydeep Paul Arrested?

Savi’s love and bravery made the impossible journey possible, and she never forgot the favor of Joydeep Paul. But what if I tell you that he was the man behind Nakul’s imprisonment in the first place? When the detectives started digging into the case again, they eventually found the button that Nakul and Savi had mentioned. It was stuck in a manhole, and that button led them straight to Joydeep Paul. Maybe that’s why he helped Savi—out of guilt. Before Savi left, Joydeep thanked her for giving him the best story to write: the novel about his journey of going back to prison. He even dedicated the book to Savi. Who would have thought? When Savi and her family started living in Bulgaria, away from their past lives, they began building a new life altogether. Meanwhile, Joydeep finally went back to the prison he had once escaped from. Will he escape again? Given his history, you never know.
