The first season of Seth Rogan’s bawdy food comedy Sausage Party: Foodtopia concluded on an interesting cliffhanger, strongly hinting at the possibility of a continuation in the near future. As a sequel to the first Sausage Party movie, the miniseries did a decent job of expanding the food lore by drawing real-world allusions. There are a number of ways to explore the narrative further, which includes key plot points not only from the recently concluded series but from the original movie as well.

What Was The Significance Of The Drone?

In the final moments of the season finale of Sausage Party: Foodtopia, Frank appeals to the better judgment of foodkind by asking them to honor Brenda’s memories by abolishing teeth or any form of currency. The introduction of currency led to economic disparity, crime, and a class divide, which not only weakened foodkind from within but also made them closer to humankind through a commonality in their respective follies. However, even after the foodkind abolished currency, the existing situation doesn’t really improve, as, just like Jeri the rice grain experienced, the strong still continue to prey on the weak by taking over everything for themselves. Extremely disappointed and furious at this selfish gesture of fellow food, Frank takes a stringent measure by making Jack the human his new enforcer and forcing  foodkind to comply with his commands by keeping them in check through fear. Barry expresses his concern over Frank’s method, who is adamant about continuing this new world order, as otherwise Brenda would have died for nothing given how power hungry the food has really become.

In the last scene of the finale, a drone is seen hovering above the gathered food, which can have multiple implications. The drone might be operated by food from other provinces who have been liberated, like Frank and co., who are trying to establish connections with their own kind. But the probability of this happening is rather slim. The most likely reason seems to be that a surviving bunch of humans have found Foodtopia and are keeping a close watch over the food while awaiting the perfect moment to strike. This bodes poorly the food, as a full-scale planned human invasion isn’t something they can deal with. On a positive note, can this also be a way to begin a partnership between humankind and foodkind in the near future? Jack’s introduction in the series hinted at the possibility of such a resolution, and we can get a definite answer to that only after the upcoming continuation reveals it.

Will Frank Rectify His Ways in the Near Future?

Throughout the first season, Frank has found himself stuck between a rock and a hard place, as he wanted to ameliorate the concerning disparity among food, but not at the cost of Jack’s life, as he believed that they could still get much help from the only surviving human in the vicinity. He made a series of bad decisions, which led to him having a falling out with Brenda, and even though he made efforts to mend their relationship, it was already too late as Brenda died at the hands of Jeri the rice grain. Guilt-stricken and disheartened, Frank eventually took an autocratic measure to force the food to quell the existing disparity by using Jack as his enforcer. While this action might have earned the food temporary peace, the method adopted by Frank to go about the situation was not the best option, and Brenda would not have approved of this either. In pain and anger, Frank has taken a harsh decision, and it will be interesting to see whether he makes a course correction in the near future, as he will not be able to maintain the peace otherwise with the possibility of the food revolting against him.

Can Brenda, Gum, and other deceased foods return in the future?

In the series, the food of Foodtopia lost the two most important members as Gum sacrificed his life to save his friends, and Brenda lost her life at the hands of Jeri the rice-grain. Gum’s experience and intellect was a key part in establishing a new world for the food, and Brenda’s wisdom and optimism was pivotal to ensure Foodtopia becomes a truly exemplary civilization in years to come. It goes without saying that their deaths were a massive blow to Foodtopia’s future, but there still might be a way for  foodkind to bring them back.

In the Sausage Party movie, in a metanarrative twist, Gum had discovered a way to move to a new dimension – where the creators of the food resided. With Gum’s help, Frank and co. had learned that they are in fact portrayed as cartoon characters, meant to entertain a bunch of other dimensional beings, and their makers used their pain and suffering to entertain the viewers. Even though Frank, Brenda, Barry, Gum and a number of their allies had crossed over the portal to the said dimension, the series doesn’t address this point at all. There is a chance that in near future, Frank and co. once again travel to the other side, and coerce their makers to bring back all the deceased food to life – which includes Brenda and Gum as well. While Foodtopia might be guided by rules akin to that of our own world, being a product of their makers’ imagination, their life and death is in their control – which implies there is still a chance of the creators reviving the characters in near future.
