In Reasonable Doubt Season 2, Episode 7, things are getting really dramatic in Jax and Lewis’ married life just like we had all predicted, because in the last episode, we saw how Jax’s life has completely flipped upside down when she discovered that her husband Lewis cheated on her with Tony. What made it even more complicated is that now Tony is pregnant and she needs a paternity test to figure out who the father is, because it could be either Lewis or Jamarion Tucker as she was sleeping with both of these men at the same time period. Lewis naturally feels guilty because of this, because he knows he messed up by cheating and lying to Jax for so long. Now that he’s ready to come clean, it’s unclear how Jax will handle it because it looks like this one mistake seems to have undone all the progress they made in couples’ therapy to fix their marriage. To top it off, Tony is now being called to testify in Jamarion Tucker and Shanelle’s case, so Jax is about to deal with Tony in court. How Jax will manage all this is what we’ll find out in this episode seven recap!
Spoilers Ahead
Who was the father of Tony’s child?
Jax had known from the start that Lewis was lying to her because she caught him at the hospital when Lewis accompanied Tony for her paternity test and said that he was tied up with work. But still, all this time Lewis had pretended to be the perfect, devoted husband, and all the while, Jax felt guilty and ashamed for sleeping with that ex-con Damon, even more so after Damon’s death. She believed her cheating and her workaholic lifestyle contributed to the collapse of their marriage. But here she got to know that Lewis had retaliated by sleeping with other women like Tony, so naturally, Jax was already feeling fed up with the whole situation. When Lewis finally came clean, Jax had had enough as she wasn’t interested in hearing his fake apologies anymore, because all he’d done was lie. So, she kicked Lewis out of the house as she needed some space to clear her mind and wanted to mentally prepared herself because they still did not know about the result of the paternity test for Tony’s baby because it felt like this could break their marriage even more.
Despite everything, Jax realized she still loved Lewis, and he also felt the same, and neither of them wanted to risk damaging their marriage further, so they went back to couples’ therapy to try and fix things. But the therapy session didn’t go smoothly. Lewis aired out his frustrations by saying how he had always been there for Jax and even forgave her after she cheated and struggled with anxiety following Damon’s suicide. On the other hand, Jax was blamed for making Lewis feel lonely, which is why he ended up with Tony as he craved some affection and did not want to feel lonely. Naturally, their therapy session developed into a heated argument, and it seemed like “uncoupling” might be easier for them than trying to fix things. But neither of them truly wanted that. The real turning point came when Lewis finally learned he was the father of Tony’s baby. Even though he knew this news could push him and Jax apart, he decided to come clean this time as he did not want to keep any more secrets. So, Lewis confessed to Jax that he was the father in the end.
What happened in the court when Tony came?
It was clear that Tony didn’t know who the father of her child was, yet she’d still asked Jamarion Tucker for money to get an abortion. At the same time, she went to the hospital for a paternity test, which proved she wasn’t sure of anything. That’s why Tony was not a reliable witness to testify, and that’s why even though Corey wanted to question Tony in court, he also knew that, as a male lawyer, it might come across as slut-shaming. So, he asked Jax to handle the case instead. You can imagine how hard it was for Jax to face Tony in court, but she had to do it for her best friend, Shanelle. And she did it quite professionally. Tony confessed that at Shanelle and Jamarion’s kids’ birthday party, she had been the one to organize everything, and from after that very party, she’d started sleeping with Jamarion, even though she knew very well he was married and had children. Despite this, Tony never told Shanelle about anything of their affair, in fact, Shanelle only found out about the affair when Jamarion himself confessed it to her. During Jax’s questioning in court, Tony tried to stick to her story by claiming that Jamarion was the only man she slept with. But after more probing, Tony admitted to sleeping with another man, who was also married with kids, though she didn’t mention him by name. But, the way Jax kept pushing her to tell the truth in front of court, it was clear that Tony finally realized that Jax knew all about her and Lewis sleeping together.
What happened between Corey and Jax?
After the trial that day, both Corey and Jax were busy going over Shanelle and Jamarion’s bank statements to figure out where all the money had gone. They knew it was going to be an all-night job, so Jax asked her assistant, Krystal, for help. But Krystal had to leave early because she was preparing for her LSAT exam, so that left only Jax and Corey in the office to get the work done. Now, throughout the season, we’ve seen that Corey and Jax had this love-hate relationship, but the way Jax could be intimidating hinted that Corey might have had a little crush on her. During this long night, Corey opened up to Jax and shared why winning Shanelle’s case meant so much to him, because there was another woman in prison who had attacked and killed her abuser because he had stalked and harassed her time after time. This woman was now serving a life sentence, and Corey felt the legal system had failed her. So, he was determined to win Shanelle’s case, not just for her, but to prove that justice could still be served for women in her position. Jax was clearly moved by Corey’s passion, and she hugged him. But there was some undeniable chemistry in the air and it felt like something more could happen between them. However, Jax stopped herself because she knew that just because she was hurting didn’t mean she should make the same mistakes again. If she gave in, her marriage with Lewis would never have a chance of recovering, with the way they both kept making bad choices. So, Jax pulled away, stopped Corey, and went home.
That’s why, at the end of Season 2, Episode 7, when Lewis came home to apologize to Jax again and tell her how much he loved her and wanted to work on their marriage, it was clear Jax didn’t want to let him go. Even after knowing he had lied and that he was going to have a baby with another woman, Jax still wanted to stay with Lewis. It definitely showed that there was hope for their marriage to get better.
