Paatal Lok season one was spectacular, to say the least. The ending of the show displayed practiced storytelling and finesse. There were many characters that added depth to the story and the screenplay and effectively shouldered the show till the end, giving us a definitive ending. The second season of Paatal Lok primarily moves between Nagaland and Delhi, amidst the murder of a popular Northeastern leader in the capital city of the country. There are some old characters that return and many new ones that change the trajectory of the show.

Hathi Ram Chaudhary

Jaideep Ahlawat returns as the magnanimous yet subtle Hathi Ram Chaudhary, whose career has not taken off since the closing of the Hathoda Tyagi case. He has moved on to his routine work and takes up a new case regarding a missing man. The case snowballs into something major and shady. He has no choice but to inform his ex-colleague-turned-IPS officer, Imran, to run an investigation. Hathi Ram is also aware of the Jonathan Thom case and finds leads that could help Ansari. Even at home, he and Renu are missing their college-bound son. Amidst all of this, he brings home a toddler and hopes Renu will let him stay at their place until the young boy’s relatives show up. Hathi Ram and Ansari are headed to Nagaland to find answers regarding the state’s charismatic leader’s death. The political climate in Nagaland is unfamiliar to our hero, and Hathi Ram is not sure how to trudge through it and nab the killer. He is forced to go after powerful people even though he knows it might cost him his job.

IPS Imran Ansari

Ishwak Singh is back in Paatal Lok season two, this time as an IPS officer and not Hathi Ram’s subordinate. IPS Imran Ansari has been handed over the investigation of Jonathan Thom’s murder. This murder took place amidst the Naga Business Summit, and the crime is the talk of the town. His investigation into the murder merges with Hathi Ram’s search for a migrant living in Delhi. IPS Imran Ansari has not changed a bit and still considers Hathi Ram as his mentor. On his recommendation, Hathi Ram joins the Jonathan Thom murder case, and both head to Nagaland. Ansari is not afraid and is keenly observing the political climate of Nagaland ever since Jonathan’s death. IPS Ansari and Hathi Ram are on the same track and come to similar conditions when things get out of hand. Ansari is also harboring a personal secret, but that does not make him any less capable a police officer.

Meghna Barua

Tillotama Shome, as Meghna Barua of Nagaland police, is a new character in the show. She is assigned to help with intel and support as Hathi Ram and Ansari reach the Northeastern state amidst a tumultuous time. Meghna Barua is a widow and a single mother who is raising her child in a state that is struggling with drug abuse, and as a police officer, she knows there are many who do not follow her orders. She also knows there are officers who hesitate to take orders from her as their boss. Ansari and Hathi Ram have no reason to fully trust her since they expect her to hide many details as both end up running their investigation without keeping her in the loop. Meghna is also a witness to a tragic death, and this helps her to change her mind. She joins hands with Hathi Ram to know more about Jonathan and his killer.

Reuben Thom

LC Sekhose, a Nagaland-based rapper, is Reuben Thom, the only living son of Jonathan Thom. Reuben, right from the start, is shown as someone who had a very public falling out with his father. Jonathan Thom had chosen to be a part of the business summit that would boost his state’s economy. Reuben was not in favor of it, and hence he was also a suspect in his father’s murder case. The police do not have any evidence against him, and his introduction is rather volatile as he is initially stopped from attending his father’s funeral. He is eventually allowed to go in since he is family. Turns out he and his mother are harboring many of his father’s secrets and hope they do not come out. Jonathan is keen to find Rose Lizo and seek answers about his father. The situation goes out of hand as the state police put out a shoot-on-sight order on him. Reuben is also not on good terms with Kapil Reddy, his father’s closest friend and a business ally. He is forcing Kapil to return the money he owed to his father. Reuben is a gray character who is carrying many unpleasant memories and has been trying to sort them ever since his father’s murder.

Uncle Ken

Jahnu Barua, a notable Assamese film director, is Uncle Ken in Paatal Lok season two. Another new character who is an influential political figure in the state, just like Jonathan Thom. Uncle Ken is a reformist, unlike Reuben and the other rebel factions who want to use force and violence to achieve social and political goals. Uncle Ken is seen as someone who has immense knowledge of Nagaland politics. He is keen on making the business summit a success, since it would benefit his people. Uncle Ken is an older gentleman who is easily likable, someone Reuben also looks up to. He gives many inputs to Hathi Ram and Ansari during the investigation, and it comes in handy for the duo.

Kapil Reddy

Nagesh Kukunoor as Kapil Reddy, a Government of India bureaucrat that has brought together the Nagaland Business Summit. Kapil has lived in Nagaland most of his life and seems to have an emotional connection to the state and its people. He is established as a good friend of the deceased Jonathan Thom, and on his insistence, the Nagaland leader had come to Delhi for the summit. It turned tragic very quickly, but Kapil is keen on going ahead with the summit. He is keen on making significant changes in the political and social system of Nagaland, or at least he portrays himself to be a good Samaritan. As the series progresses, it is established that Kapil and his wife Grace do not have the best interests of the state in mind, and at the same time they owe Jonathan a lot of money. These two reasons make him a suspect as well.

Rose Lizo

Merenla Imsong is Rose Lizo, one of the prime suspects in Jonathan Thom’s murder. She is first seen running away from Jonathan’s room in the hotel CCTV, and hence Ansari assumes she must have killed him and wants to dig up the motive. Rose has a sad history, and it includes being addicted to drugs and becoming a mother at a young age. As the series progresses, she is shown as someone who had a toxic relationship with Jonathan, and hence she had no option but to move to Delhi. Her life in Delhi is now showcased as something which is not a bed of roses as she spirals into bad company one after another until she meets Raghu Paswan, who helps her to get her out of her misery.

Jonathan Thom

Kaguirong Gonmei is Jonathan Thom, whose decapitated body is found at the start of Paatal Lok season two. He is a popular political leader of Nagaland who agrees to take part in the Nagaland Business Summit in Delhi. His son Reuben objected to his move and decided to split from his father over it in no time. Jonathan is seen as a great leader, but as Ansari and Hathi Ram further investigate, they uncover many of Jonathan’s dirty secrets. He is one of the biggest suppliers of drugs and is known to have had affairs with many women. Rose Lizo, the prime suspect in his murder, also seems to have a connection with him, and the police are trying to unravel the mystery around his larger-than-life persona in the state.

Daniel

Prashant Tamang, winner of the 2007 Indian Idol, is back on the small screen as Daniel, the security officer assigned to protect Jonathan Thom. Daniel is the silent, brooding man who is initially deemed a suspect in Jonathan’s murder, but he had an alibi as a staff member from the hotel. Daniel, a sharpshooter, is hired by someone to kill those who might know something about Jonathan’s murder. This includes Rose and Reuben. Daniel is a no-nonsense person who religiously follows orders. Daniel is just a puppet who is dangerous and hard to catch. His arrest could lead Hathi Ram and Ansari to Jonathan’s killer.

Dhruv Malik

Viren Burman is Dhruv Malik, who is one of the key persons that could lead Ansari and Hathi Ram to Rose Lizo. Dhruv is a typical rich brat who runs a nightclub but has many illegal rackets in his kitty. He claims to know Rose as his employee but soon he is forced to reveal his relationship with her. Dhruv acts cocky in the start, but soon Hathi Ram gets to him in no time to get the truth out of him.

Raghu Paswan

Newbie Shailesh Kumar is Raghu Paswan, one of the many new characters in season two of Paatal Lok. The show begins with Hathi Ram on the lookout for Raghu Paswan after his wife, Gita, filed a missing person’s case. Hathi Ram learns of his profession and life from Raghu’s roommates and his employer and joins the dots to finally figure out where the man is headed. Raghu is finally spotted by Hathi Ram with Rose Lizo in CCTV footage. He thus concludes Raghu knew Rose and both were escaping from Delhi on the night of Jonathan’s murder. Hathi Ram is keen to look for him in Nagaland and find some intel about his job and movements.
