Why did Wes want to get connected with his father?
Ever since Wes could remember, he was obsessed with bike racing. He had grown up idolizing his father, Dean Miller, who was a big deal in the racing world. Everyone talked about Dean like he was a legend. But after Dean left Wes and his mother when Wes was just a kid, they never saw him again. Dean had this attitude that he wasn’t cut out to be a father. Instead of stepping up, he buried himself in racing, alcohol, and women and avoided any responsibility. He left Wes and his mom behind because he thought that was the easy way out. Despite everything, Wes still dreamed of becoming a bike racer. After serving six months in prison for illegal street racing, he found himself broke, jobless, and stuck in a crappy motel. All he had was his dream of racing. With nothing left to lose, he decided to reach out to his estranged father as he was hoping to take a chance on himself. Their first meeting was honestly not so good. Dean was surprised and uncomfortable, as he had never planned on being a father. But when he saw Wes’s talent and determination, he couldn’t ignore it. Despite his reservations, Dean decided to give Wes a shot and agreed to be his trainer. So, instead of stepping into the role of a father, Dean promised to help Wes become a one-of-a-kind racer. It was a chance for both of them to build a relationship by finding a new path forward, with racing as their common ground.
How did Able help Wes?
So, as Wes started getting trained by his father, Dean, another important person in his life came into the picture: Able. Able was not only Dean’s friend but also his boss at the bike shop where Dean worked. He knew Dean well and understood that he wasn’t cut out to be a father. When Wes first showed up at the shop, Able was upfront with him. He warned Wes not to expect any fatherly love from Dean. it was clear that Able was looking out for him and didn’t want Wes’s heart broken again. But Able saw something in Wes. He started believing Wes had the potential to be even better than Dean after he won his first race. When Able learned that Wes didn’t have a job, he offered him work at the bike shop and even gave him an advance on his salary to help him get by. Then there was Camila, a girl Wes was dating who had a little kid. Dean thought Camila and the child would be too much of a distraction for Wes. Able, however, believed that a real man would take responsibility and wouldn’t let distractions get in the way. Able was all about keeping Wes grounded and not letting the racing world go to his head, unlike Dean, who had let his ego and alcohol destroy his potential. Things took a turn when Wes faced an opponent named Cody in a race. Cody knocked Wes off the track, which sparked a huge feud. Dean took the loss hard and became more ego-driven than ever, even calling Wes “son” in a way that made it clear he was taking the loss personally.
Dean didn’t want anything to come between Wes and racing. So he went too far and informed Camila that Wes had been in prison for street racing, and emphasized that in the world of racing, there is always the potential for accidents. That’s why he warned Camila not to depend on Wes, as there was no future for them. Also, he advised Wes to leave his job at Able’s shop. Able, who was devastated by this, knew it wasn’t right but couldn’t stop Wes. When Wes moved in with Dean, he found out just how messy and chaotic Dean’s life was. The house was a disaster, with dirty dishes piling up and women coming and going. This wasn’t the kind of life Wes signed up for. It was clear that Dean was trying to turn Wes into another version of himself, irresponsible with no ambition and empty inside- and Wes did not want that. He confronted Dean about it, and Dean’s anger got out of control, which led him to physically lash out at Wes. Feeling crushed, Wes turned to drugs and ended up in jail again. And guess who came to the rescue? Yes, Able. He not only got Wes out of trouble but also offered him a safe place to stay with him at his house. Able wanted Wes to stay focused on racing and stay away from the toxic environment with Dean. He even let Wes choose a bike from his collection to ride, which showed just how much he cared. So, even though Wes faced a lot of setbacks, Able was there to support him and help him get back on track.
Why did Dean decide to race?
Throughout all this drama, something changed in Dean. After reconnecting with Wes and seeing how things turned out, Dean started to realize a few things about himself. He knew he wasn’t cut out to be a father, and felt genuinely sorry for not being there for Wes. But meeting Wes again gave him a new sense of purpose. Dean understood that he couldn’t change Wes to be just like him. Instead, he realized that Wes needed to follow his own path and race in his own way. But there was one thing Dean knew he was still great at—bike racing. He wanted to prove to himself and to Wes that he still had it. That is why he decided to race alongside his son. For Dean, this wasn’t just about winning the race; it was about bonding with his son in a meaningful way to see who could come out on top together.
In One Fast Move’s ending, at the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Wes and Dean, along with other racers, participate in the big race. It was an intense, nail-biting competition, and Wes and Dean fought hard to stay on top. But just before the final stretch, Dean’s bike slid off the track, and he lost the race. However, Wes managed to pull through and win. At that moment, Wes proved to his father that he was truly his son. Despite all the challenges—being broke, having no job, and juggling a complicated relationship with Camila—Wes showed that nothing could distract him from his goal. He had the talent and the determination to win, and he did. Dean, Able, and Camila were all incredibly proud of Wes. May he not turn out like his father and go on to win many races in the future as well.
