‘Mithya’ Season 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Were Juhi And Rhea Dead Or Alive?

Mithya season 1 was about Juhi, a Hindi professor in Darjeeling, coming across unpleasant truths about her family. Out of nowhere, she was being stalked and mentally harassed by her new student, Rhea Rajguru. It turns out that Rhea bore a strong grudge against everyone related to Juhi Adhikari. As Rhea was accused of plagiarism on her college assignment essay, a Pandora’s box is opened, and everyone learns of Juhi’s father’s shady past. Season one ended with Juhi learning Rhea was her father’s daughter from a brief affair. When Rhea tried to connect with him, he ignored her, which led to her going after Juhi. Amidst all these revelations, Juhi’s husband Neil was also killed, and Rhea confessed to killing him, claiming it was an act of self-defense. To Juhi’s shock, Rhea revealed the self-defense part was a lie, just to get a smaller sentence, and she would be out in no time to take revenge on her biological father for giving up on her yet again.

Spoilers Ahead

Did Juhi plagiarize her book?

Mithya Season 2 began with Juhi confessing via social media that her award-winning book was plagiarized. The story goes into a flashback when Juhi is stated to have joined Oxford University as a Hindi professor amidst the success of her new book “Dhund.” She is approached by a man named Amit Choudhary, accusing her of plagiarism claiming she stole the story of “Dhund” from his book. Juhi was shocked, and on returning to Darjeeling, she was sent a legal notice by the same man. Rhea, on the other hand, was out of prison, taking care of her late stepfather’s tea estate and tending to her comatose aunt/stepmother. Rhea tried to manipulate her biological father Professor Tyagi by funding the local university and having them open a library in his name.

Juhi and her family did not trust Rhea’s words or actions and kept her away even though she attempted to show some concern for Yash, Juhi and Neil’s son. Amit Choudhary was indeed a small-time writer who was a big fan of Professor Tyagi and was hunted down by Rhea to orchestrate her revenge plan. She wanted to put the father and daughter through public humiliation, and luring Amit in was the only way to do it.

Why did Professor Anand Tyagi commit suicide?

Professor Anand Tyagi, Juhi’s father, who was a renowned author and ex-professor as well, was in shock on learning what Amit Choudhary was claiming about Juhi’s work. Professor Tyagi assumed he’d read Amit’s manuscript sent to him by his friend and indirectly influenced Juhi’s writing. Professor Tyagi approached Amit for the purpose of finding out what he was up to. Amit was not ready to back down and asked that “Dhund” be re-published in his name and Juhi gave a public apology where she admits to plagiarizing his work. Professor Tyagi offered him money in a conversation that was recorded by Amit. He sent these recordings to Juhi, which further angered her.

Juhi was at a loss for words on realizing this might cost her the Oxford job, which was when she came clean on having plagiarized Amit’s work. Professor Tyagi was shell shocked, but he had no response for his actions, as he claimed he did it out of love and to protect Juhi. Professor Anand Tyagi was clobbered from all sides, as his family had no love or respect for him anymore. He met with Rhea in the same coffee shop he met her the last time. He profusely apologized to her for being cruel to her all these years. Moments after his conversation with Rhea, he jumped off the coffee shop just like her mother had done.

Did Rhea threaten to reveal Juhi’s secret?

Days before Profesor Tyagi took that unfortunate step, Rhea had learned that Vishal and Juhi had been good friends from college days apart from just being colleagues. Vishal’s wife admitted to having been insecure about Vishal and Juhi’s friendship, as she’d always assumed they were in love. Rhea, just like Juhi, was attached to Yash, but the latter never let her get close to her son. Rhea, however, noticed a strange bond between Vishal and Yash, and she wondered if there was more going on than they were letting on. Rhea remembered having seen a fertility clinic file at Juhi’s home and asked her friend/errand boy Arun to steal the file. The file revealed Neil to be infertile, which made her question if Vishal was Yash’s father. At Professor Tyagi’s prayer meeting, Rhea stole some of the things in the house that might have been used by Vishal and Yash. She asked Arun to send them off for DNA testing. If Rhea’s hunch was right, she could use the findings as leverage to further inflict pain on her. The DNA results were just like she expected, and she planned to use the report against Juhi.

Juhi, on the other hand, learned that the manuscript sent by Professor Tyagi’s friend had been a murder mystery and that the story was different from ‘Dhund’. Juhi quickly found out her student’s friend had switched the manuscript using an exterminator who was instructed by Arun to do so. Juhi angrily confronted Rhea with the revelation, asking her to back away from her life. A smug Rhea let her know about her knowledge of Yash’s parentage, stunning Juhi. This put Juhi on the back foot, and her plan to put Rhea in check suddenly went haywire. Rhea branded her a cheater just like her father, and threatened to take Yash away from her, as the kid deserved a better life.

Who kidnapped Yash?

A distraught Juhi spent the whole night away from home only to come back and be informed that Yash was nowhere to be found. She was quick to inform the police and claimed Rhea had kidnapped Yash as she had threatened her before. Juhi was under the impression Rhea was the only person who was capable of doing this, keeping in mind her past record of harassing Juhi as a student. She left no stone unturned to shift the blame on Rhea, hoping to get rid of her. Rhea, on the other hand, got into a relationship with Amit, as they bonded over the pain of losing Professor Tyagi. He was a mentor figure to Amit, who claimed to have grown up on his books, which changed his life.

Rhea finally had seen an affectionate side of her father, who referred to her as ‘my child.’ This trauma bonding was weird and odd to watch, but somehow both found solace in each other. Juhi was caught lying when the police realized Yash’s kidnapping was orchestrated to frame Rhea. Unfortunately, Yash was not found in the hideout as per Juhi’s plan. Juhi came up with the plan to put Rhea back in prison since she had too much information that could ruin many lives. Juhi admitted to having slept with Vishal, but she was not ready to let anyone know about her son’s parentage. She was not like her father, and kept Yash because she desperately wanted a child, and Neil would not have been able to give her one.

Who killed Arun?

Arun confessed to Rhea that he’d kidnapped Yash for her, as he loved her. Rhea was shocked to find his room filled with her pictures, which made her realize Arun was obsessed with her. It was obvious in season one that Arun would do anything for Rhea. It was also appalling how Rhea did not realize this anytime sooner, and since Yash’s life was at stake, she had to come up with a plan to save her nephew. Rhea lured Arun and made him take Yash out of the forest. Amit reached on time to save her. A scuffle between the three led to Arun’s death at the hands of Amit. Amit was terrified, unlike Rhea, who was calm moments after Arun fell dead.

Amit was soon becoming a responsible partner who wanted to be there for Rhea, but he wasn’t aware of the kind of psychopathy she was capable of. He was only aware of a version of Rhea, the side she’d revealed to him. Arun had to die to pave the way for Rhea to take Yash with him and use him as leverage to make Juhi state the truth.

What Happens To Juhi and Rhea?

Juhi and the police found the dead body of a child with a mutilated head. The police claimed it was Yash’s body while Juhi had a panic attack and was sent to a mental health facility to recover from the shock. Juhi claimed the dead body was not of Yash, and she kept repeating that. She was in shock because her plan to keep Yash away from Rhea had backfired. She would not be able to live with the guilt of losing her son because of her own wrongdoing. However, her motherly instincts kicked in, and she was sure Yash was still alive. Amit, back at Rhea’s home, was alarmed to witness her killing her aunt/stepmother after she got hold of the property. A deranged Rhea wanted to take revenge on everyone that had wronged her, which could be the result of her upbringing as she had no one to turn to. The anger festering into hatred was the reason behind her killing her stepfather and his wife, whom she believed were bad parents. Rhea let him know about her plan to take him and Yash to Nepal and then fly off to Grenada in the Caribbean. Rhea was mentally disturbed, yet she was efficient with her plans, which scared Amit.

Amit sneaked into Juhi’s ward in the mental asylum and shared his plan to trap Rhea and rescue Yash. On reaching home, he shared his plans to invite Juhi to Rhea’s home under the guise of reuniting with Yash and killing her. It was hard to figure out if Amit was on Juhi’s or Rhea’s side. Amit may have had some ulterior motives behind pitting sister against sister. Juhi was brought to Rhea’s home, and she assumed Amit had switched sides. Juhi was in the enemy territory, and she did not want to die yet since she knew Yash was alive. Amit injected Rhea with the tranquilizer and began their hunt to find Yash.

Amit had no intention of pitting the two sisters against each other. He was a kind person who wanted to do something right by saving a child and letting him live with his mother. He figured he could pacify Rhea later, hoping their love and relationship would change her. It was wishful thinking from Amit’s side, as Rhea would never let go of her control over the relationship. He did not know that Rhea clearly needed help. Juhi and Amit found Yash with a local who had kept the boy hidden in a basket. Yash was rescued in no time, and Juhi was glad her son was alive. While driving back home, Rhea confronted both Amit and Juhi for conspiring against her. She was angry towards her sister, and her obsession with letting Yash have a good life was not fading away. However, Rhea could not kill Juhi, as she was family, at the end of the day. Rhea probably liked a good chase, and with Juhi gone, she would not have anything to get her going. This was a sick mentality, but Rhea’s upbringing was to blame for it. She was used to chasing her father and stepfather for love; repeating that behavior with Juhi would keep her on the edge.

Rhea shot Amit instead of Juhi. Juhi, on the other hand, wanted to get rid of the person who caused a lot of distress. She wasn’t like Rhea and wanted some peace in life now that Yash was with her. Juhi got behind the wheels ram the vehicle onto Rhea and shot her as well out of pain and agony. Season two ended with Rhea in the hospital recovering from her injuries and being questioned by the police about the turn of events. Rhea presented the story in such a manner that the police would not suspect her of any foul play. She claimed to have killed Arun in self-defense as he was trying to rape her. Rhea was planning to get away with multiple crimes yet again. However, she might have liked Amit, which was why she took the responsibility of Arun’s death to keep him alive. Rhea did not admit to knowing Amit, to avoid any complications. Amit was seen in Grenada, where he received Professor Amit Tyagi’s book with a syringe and a bottle of poison. Rhea was quick to locate him and let him know she was following him. She may want Amit alive so that she can track him down and possibly harm him as well. Juhi was seen escaping the town with Yash, possibly leaving her life in Darjeeling behind. She may have known Rhea very well by now and wanted a fresh start with her son far away from her sister.
