Park Kang-moo
Park Kang-moo, portrayed by Hwang Jung-min, is a complex character whose journey reveals deep layers of devotion, sacrifice, and redemption. As a husband, Park Kang-moo comes across as incredibly dedicated and loving. He takes on traditional roles at home with genuine care—cooking, cleaning, and all sorts of chores. He takes care of Kang Mi-seon, who is a major detective. His actions show his unwavering support and commitment, even if it means stepping into a less glamorous role as a school van driver to contribute to their household. Park was a skilled and committed operative in his previous life as a secret agent for the Korean Defense Intelligence Command. His career took a dramatic turn during a mission in Russia, where he acted on his instincts to stop a dangerous illegal weapons shipment. Unfortunately, this unauthorized action led to the death of one of the other agents, Geum Seok, before his eyes. The death, along with his subsequent firing from his job, forced Park to leave his career behind. This incident weighed heavily on him, which helped in shaping his character and influencing his decisions for years to come, living a normal life as a civilian and hiding his past from his wife.
Despite leaving his agent life behind, Park’s sense of duty and justice never truly faded. His return to the world of espionage is driven by a need to make amends and find redemption. He demonstrates his resilience and commitment to doing what’s right. When he re-enters the field to help Jang Hee-Joo, one of his former colleagues, and rescue her husband, Kim Jung-san, Park’s actions reflect his dedication to fighting corruption and rectifying past mistakes. Park’s decision to hide his past life from Mi-seon comes from a combination of guilt and a desire to protect her from the dangerous world he once inhabited. He wanted to shield her from the risks associated with his former job and maintain a sense of normalcy in their lives. This secrecy, while well-intentioned, added a layer of complexity to their relationship, eventually leading to misunderstandings and tension as his wife thought that he was hiding something, maybe cheating on her. As a friend, Park is shown to be loyal and reliable. His willingness to risk his own safety to help Jang Hee-Joo and to fight against General Park’s corruption shows his sense of honor. His actions speak to his deep admiration for his colleagues and his commitment to justice. When he realized Jang Hee-Joo’s true identity as Genera Park, he and his wife joined forces to stop the illegal operation of laundering money. Overall, Park Kang-moo is portrayed as a character marked by his devotion to those he cares about and his relentless pursuit of justice. His journey from a dedicated agent to a devoted husband, and ultimately back to a key player in the fight against corruption, showcases his transformation and growth.
Kang Mi-Seon
Yum Jung-ah’s portrayal of Kang Mi-seon shows a character who is initially seen to have struggled with her husband Park Kang-moo’s perceived laziness. Although he takes care of the home, doing everything from cooking and cleaning to looking after her, Mi-seon struggles to appreciate his efforts because she’s frustrated with his lack of ambition, as he is content with just being a school van driver. After all, he is not a traditional husband, not a provider; instead, he steals money from her, but marriage is all about sacrifice, and that’s why she is willing to make it work, because deep down she knows that her husband is an honest man who is devoted to her, and she is happy with that.
The real turning point comes when Mi-seon begins to suspect that Park might be having an affair. This suspicion shatters her trust and leads her to investigate his actions. What she discovers is both shocking and transformative: her husband, whom she thought was a passive homemaker, is actually a former secret agent. The revelation of Park’s past life and his reasons for keeping it secret add betrayal and complexity to their relationship. In contrast to Park’s domestic role, Mi-seon is depicted as a fiercely dedicated detective. Her professionalism and courage make her a standout character, especially when we see how, although she wants to find out about her husband’s affair, when duty calls, she gives her job more priority than this. Despite the initial friction and mistrust, Mi-seon and Park ultimately form a powerful alliance. Their combined strengths become crucial as they work together to defeat their common enemy, General Park. Mi-seon’s detective skills and Park’s experience as an agent make for a formidable team. Their collaboration helps them catch General Par at the end. And it is clear that she has a lot more respect for her husband now, and maybe they will work together in the future as well.
General Park
Jang Hee-joo, played by Jeon Hye-jin, is a fascinating and deceptive character who plays a crucial role in the story. At first glance, Jang Hee-joo appears to be a dedicated ally and a victim of circumstance. She is portrayed as someone deeply involved in a personal mission to rescue her “husband,” Kim Jung-san, from the clutches of General Park. However, the twist reveals that Jang Hee-joo is, in fact, General Park herself. This revelation turns her into a master of deception with a hidden agenda. General Park’s goal is to recover the slush funds tied to a massive corruption scheme. To achieve this, she needs to manipulate and deceive those around her. Her motive is driven by a desire to reclaim the stolen money and secure her position, as she has left her previous life as an agent behind. To execute her goal, she creates an elaborate plan. She poses as Jang Hee-joo, the grieving wife of Jung-san, and builds a story that gets the trust of Park Kang-moo and others. She expertly fools Park Kang-moo by playing on his sense of duty and guilt. She exploits Park’s empathy and commitment to justice, which involves staged events to rescue her husband Jung-san from the mental hospital to get the password to the slush fund file. Her plan almost succeeds, but as we all know, the truth eventually comes to light. Park Kang-moo and Mi-seon uncover the truth about Jang Hee-joo’s real identity. In the end, Jang Hee-joo’s elaborate scheme fails, which leads to her capture. Her character showcases a blend of cunning intelligence and ruthless ambition, making her a compelling antagonist in the story.
Kim Jung-san
Kim Joo-hun’s portrayal of Kim Jung-san adds a crucial layer to the story, making him a key player in the fight against corruption. Kim Jung-San was initially part of a dedicated team tasked with exposing a massive fraud involving the Ministry of National Defense and capturing General Park. As a whistleblower against MND, his role was critical in revealing the illegal activities and bringing those responsible to justice. His mission was to gather evidence, expose the corruption, and lure General Park so that he reveals himself and comes out of hiding. However, General Park, who was later revealed to be Jang Hee-joo, had other plans. She managed to kidnap Jung-san and take him to a torture chamber, where he was put through intense pain and pressure. But Jung-san’s commitment to his mission remained strong, and he did not reveal any information. When he escaped the mental hospital with Park’s help, he inadvertently revealed the file’s location at the hospital to Park Kang-moo, as he trusted him. But Jang Hee-joo/General Park got that information through a hidden camera in the hospital and went to grab the file from his safe house.
Hun-Ki-Ya, Dong-Su-Ya, Sang-ung
Hun-Ki-Ya, Dong-Su-Ya, and Sang-ung were Kang Mi-seon’s detective colleagues, and they added a lot of humor to the movie. Sang-ung, in particular, had a history of being accused of affairs and had even been divorced before, which made him particularly skeptical. Together with Hun-Ki-Ya and Dong-Su-Ya, they decided to dig into Park Kang-moo’s behavior to see if he was cheating on Mi-seon. They collected evidence and kept an eye on him, trying to find out if he was having an affair. But in the end, they realized they were wrong about Park. Far from being unfaithful, he was actually a devoted husband who took great care of Mi-seon. And on top of that, a secret agent! So, they decided to give him the respect he deserved.
