‘Missing You’ Recap & Ending Explained: Who Killed Kate’s Father Clint?

British criminal investigative dramas are quite the rage these days. Ever since the BBC began to produce and air such excellent crime dramas, many streaming platforms have picked up on that pattern. Missing You is one such miniseries that explores the life of a detective who is seeking the murderer who killed her father. The five-part series is dense, and many unpleasant secrets come out as the detective is close to finding the ugly truth.

Spoilers Ahead

Who was Rishi Magari?

Missing You is a five-part miniseries that began with Rishi Magari, a regular guy living in the countryside. He was kidnapped by Reynaldo, a man on a tractor, and it seems he was acting on someone else’ orders. Detective Kate Donovan, along with her colleague, Nia, and the new digital analyst, Charlie, starts investigation on the missing person case. Rishi Magari’s car was found abandoned, and the trio began their work to find where the man had disappeared to.

Rishi Magari was captured by Titus, a dog breeder and dangerous con man who kidnapped him using a catfishing account of a woman named Vanessa through a dating app called Melody Cupid. Rishi Magari’s online activity was accessed by Charlie, and they found out about the dating app. Kate formed a profile in it on the insistence of her private detective friend Stacey. She had been heartbroken over Josh, her ex-fiancé leaving her without so much as a message eleven years ago. She decided to join the dating app to find out what is out there.

Why was Kate upset?

Kate got upset on finding Josh on the dating app. This was shocking, since she had not heard from him in a long time, and finding him after over a decade made her reminisce about their days together, and she began to regress, which her friends did not enjoy watching. She tried to connect with Josh, but she got rejected by him on the app. Kate’s father, Clint Donovan, had been killed while on active duty, and ever since she had wanted to confront the killer who confessed his role in killing him. Monte Leburn was the murderer in prison and Kate learned he was dying of cancer. She got access to meet him to make him speak up about the reason behind her father’s murder.

Monte Leburn was under a lot of medication, and confessed that he was paid off to take the fall and did not actually commit the murder. This boggled Kate, for she realized her father was killed by someone else. Kate’s boss, Ellis Staggers, was angry after finding out about Kate’s visit to Monte Leburn and had to suspend her for not following the rules. However, Stacey’s investigation skills helped Kate find out that Josh had met Leburn in the prison. He had used Staggers’ influence for the meeting and it angered Kate beyond any doubt. Kate demanded answers and a dejected Staggers had to let her know of her father’s involvement with the crime syndicate boss Calligan, and how when he tried to back away from working for the mobster, it led to Clint’s death.

Who was Brendan Fells?

Brendan Fells was a young boy that was seen stalking Kate. She assumed him to be a criminal, and on confronting him, he let her know that his mother was on a vacation with Josh Buchanan. This helped Kate connect the dots and with the intention of meeting Josh, she began to help Brendan find his mother. He claimed his mother went incommunicado, but with the help of Kate, Nia, and Charlie, they found CCTV footage of her withdrawing money from an ATM. Brendan Falls accused Josh of kidnapping his mother. He was soon attacked by a stranger a few days later. The attacker turned out to be Aqua, who was Kate and Josh’s mutual friend. Aqua went out of her way to defend Josh’ behavior, which further angered Kate. Kate, through her father’s old colleague, was also made aware of his affair with someone named Parker. This was a blow to Kate, but she was slowly coming around to the fact that her father was far from perfect.

Where were Dana and Rishi held?

Dana and Rishi were the victims of a large catfish scam run by Titus and his assistant, Reynaldo. They were a ruthless combo and had a full setup on their hands to extract money from their victims. Rishi could not give him the money Titus was demanding, and hence he was killed. Titus also killed the driver he hired when his footage along with Dana emerged, fearing his scam would be exposed. Dana was catfished using Josh’s profile, and she was close to being killed since Titus was unable to access one last trust fund account that she’d set aside for her son’s education. Dana was set to be executed when she escaped from the ranch owned by Titus, hoping to meet her son.

How did Kate find out about Josh?

Kate was very close to finding out where Dana and Rishi were held thanks to Charlie. He also let her know of an AI website that would help her find Josh through the writing patterns of his articles. Since he was a journalist, his digital footprint was visible, and in no time Kate was able to find the PO box of the area Josh lived in. Kate was quick to head to that side of the town and followed an old man after noticing the pattern of his visits to the post office . This was a long task, yet Kate succeeded in it because she was determined. She was quick to follow the elderly person even though he  claimed he did not know anyone by the name of Josh or Reggie Cross, an alias.

What did Calligan divulge about Clint Donovan?

Kate was kidnapped from the yard of the elderly person’s home by Calligan, the mafioso. Calligan was now aware Kate was looking into him as she believed him to be the murderer. Calligan was not awful to her and admitted to having blackmailed her father on learning of his affair with Parker. The ruthless boss also admitted that he would often kill backstabbers by making their bodies disappear, so the way Clint was killed was not in line with Calligan’s modus operandi. Kate had to believe Calligan since he had nothing to lose at this point. Kate came back to the address she had initially followed and found Josh living with his late wife’s daughter and father. This broke Kate’s heart, and at this point she was unwilling to reconcile or hear him out.

How was Titus caught?

Titus had put together a long, devious plan to get his hands on Dana and the money they were trying to extort from her. Him and Reynaldo kidnapped Brendan, and that was witnessed by Kate. Since Dana escaped, this was the only way to get back at her. It seems Titus came up with this plan in haste and underestimated Dana and the lengths she would go to save herself and Brendan. Kate, with the help of Nia and Charlie, chased the van by tracking Brendan’s phone. Kate was keen on saving the boy because it was obvious his mother was a victim of a scam as she was aware that the profile did not belong to Josh. Kate was also informed by Titus’ neighbor about his sneaky behavior. This added to the growing suspicion about this con man/killer, and they followed him to the ranch and Kate wanted to put an end to this menace.

Dana was  alive and had killed one of Titus’ men, which petrified him and Reynaldo. They set the ranch on fire as a way to kill the people they had taken hostage. They would try to pass the fire off as an accident, in the hopes the police might have a hard time figuring out people had died in it. Dana was going strong, and as the arson was put in motion, she released all the hostages who were scammed by these two men. She wanted to help them as they’d faced their wrath as much as she did. On releasing the hostages, they killed Reynaldo. He had to be killed for the brutality he carried out in the name of loyalty and greed. The show was headed towards a mess since the conclusion of this subplot was anticlimactic. Kate, Dana, and Brendan came together to kill the last man standing, Titus. Kate was the one that shot at him, and he died on the spot. This was the end of his tyranny, and the many people who were stuck because of his diabolical scam were also rescued.

Who killed Kate’s father Clint?

Kate got to know Parker’s address thanks to Calligan. Since Calligan was keeping track of Clint and his personal life, the mafioso used the details for his benefit by blackmailing the police officer. On learning Parker was a man, Kate was shocked to find out her father had lived a lie. He was a closeted gay who started an affair with a man while not leaving his wife or Kate in the process. Parker only had words of praise for Clint, and Kate was moved by that. However, she was not sure if she was angry at her father or sad at the fact that he could not live the way he wanted. What Kate felt for her father was utter confusion, since he did cheat on her mother. On the other hand, he stayed true to himself by not leaving Parker in the end. He chose to quit working for Calligan because he felt he could not live in constant fear. Kate was quick to admit her father Clint was far from perfect, and the end of this arc felt random.

Charlie, however, ran the second fingerprints on the murder weapon that was used to kill Clint. Around the same time, Kate and Josh reconciled, and it was as if nothing had changed in the last eleven years. Josh and Kate’s relationship did not last long when the latter learned from Charlie of a second fingerprint that was found on Clint’s murder weapon. Kate could not believe her ears on learning that the second print belonged to Josh. She had to confront him and let her know the reality. This was the only way for her to uncover the truth that was kept hidden from her for obvious reasons.

Aqua, a transwoman who was Josh and Kate’s friend, witnessed Clint with Parker, so he followed her back home and began to threaten her. Clint was terrified because he was afraid Aqua would call up Kate and divulge what she witnessed. Since he’d closeted for a long time, Clint had lost his sense of control and was agitated by the thought of losing his family and career. Aqua had to inform Josh, as both were roommates, and he came to her rescue when Clint began to physically harm her. Clint could not control his anger and was close to murdering Aqua. Since he was a cop, he would get away with it and probably could live with that guilt. Before reaching Aqua’s place, Clint asked Staggers to show up there too. Staggers was loyal to Clint, and he reached on time to find Josh had accidentally stabbed Clint to death. The tussle between the two led to the murder, and hence Josh could not contain the sadness of having killed his own soon-to-be father-in-law. Josh was carrying a heavy secret within himself, and walking away from Kate without any notice was the only choice. Even though the death was accidental, he felt guilt over watching Kate crying day and night over her father’s death. They had convinced and paid Monte Leburn to take the fall, hence the record of them visiting the prison to meet him.

Missing You ended with a distraught Kate processing the information that was unloaded on her. Staggers and Josh tried to keep it a secret for as long as they could, but they underestimated Kate’s will to find out why Clint was killed. His death changed everyone’s life, and this was the closure Parker and Kate required. With Kate and Josh sitting next to each other, their future together was uncertain, yet there was a flicker of hope that their relationship might sail through this storm.
