Did Vasu recover from the accident?
Miss You began with a bunch of goons sent by a minister to Vasu’s home to threaten him and his family. Vasu, formally known as Vasudevan, had filed a complaint against the minister’s son regarding an incident. Vasu’s father begs them to leave them alone. Vasu, an aspiring film director, was at a coffee shop in Coorg, savoring a special coffee named “Bella.” On his way back to Chennai, Vasu meets with a car accident, and during his recovery process, the doctor lets the family know of his intermediate memory loss. Vasu had forgotten everything that happened over the last two years, and this was the first obstacle he faced, as any lead would in a romantic drama. The politician was also relieved that Vasu did not remember anything, but he was sure if his memories did come back, he would return and continue his crusade to put his son behind bars.
Why did Vasu move to Bangalore?
Since Vasu had lost his memories, he was harmless at the moment, but wanted to get away from his family, especially his friends Aravind, Sindhu, and Charles. On his way to Bangalore from Chennai, he met Bobby, who was sulking over his ex-girlfriend. Vasu comes across as a good Samaritan and advises him to move on with life if Bobby thinks he has given his 100% to his relationship. This motivation was enough for Bobby to head back to Bangalore and ask Vasu to join him.
Why did Vasu’s mother reject Subbulakshmi?
Bobby and Vasu become fast friends because that’s the need of the hour in the movie for the plot to move forward. He began to work in Bobby’s coffee shop and ran into Subbulakshmi, a woman living in the same complex who worked as a tax auditor. It was love at first sight for Vasu, as is the case with many relationships in romantic dramas, and he pursues her hoping she would accept his love for her. Subbulakshmi said no to his proposal, which put Vasu on the back foot as he planned to marry her. This was bizarre since he had only just met her and expected her to be okay with a long-term commitment with him. Her response was normal, yet Vasu had to bring in the big guns, his friends and his mother, as he believed they would back his plan to marry Subbulakshmi. To his shock, his mother was against Vasu marrying Subbulakshmi, and his friends were also discouraging him. Vasu was seeking reasons, and they finally had to come clean about his past with Subbulakshmi, which he had forgotten about, thanks to his accident.
Did Subbulakshmi and Vasu’s marriage break up?
Long before Vasu’s car accident, he had met Subbulakshmi on a bus to Chennai, and they did not have a good first meet cute like you’d expect in a romantic comedy or drama. They were irritated with each other the whole trip and eventually resented one another to the point Vasu was hoping not to meet her again. Subbulakshmi was also the woman his father and mother introduced him to as a prospective bride, but that idea went downhill. Both Subbulakshmi and Vasu got into a severe argument over him accidentally hitting her father while driving. There was no room for reconciliation until Subbulakshmi’s father was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since Vasu and Subbulakshmi’s fathers were friends, he convinced his son to get married to her and promised things would be good after the nuptials.
What happened after the wedding?
Vasu, who was hearing about this chain of events from his friends, was shocked to know he was married to Subbulakshmi,. He was keen to find out what caused their marriage to end. Vasu and Subbulakshmi got married thanks to their parents, and as expected, both were not compatible with each other from the start. Vasu noticed they were different but Subbulakshmi assumed this was how marriage was supposed to be and was not bothered by Vasu’s discomfort around her. Vasu was not happy in his marriage, and nobody would notice that, including his parents and wife. Vasu’s friends expected him to adjust, but he was having a hard time being around a spouse who did not understand him. Ever since that realisation, Vasu also did not put in any effort to make the marriage work.
During a late-night return from a cinema, Subbulakshmi was a witness to the murder of Murali, the son of Vasu’s househelp. Vasu was not with her since he’d been asked to meet a producer who was interested in an adaptation of his story for his first film. The news channel and the police the next day were claiming the death was due to an accident while Subulakshmi swore she saw the young boy being beaten brutally by a minister’s son. Vasu wanted her to file a police complaint, and he promised her he’d stick by her side if any issues came up. A confused Subbulakshmi did not agree with him and refused to file. Vasu, who was livid at the turn of events, chose to announce that he wanted to leave Subbulakshmi since he could not be with a partner who did not trust him This announcement was a breath of fresh air for Vasu, but for his parents, Subbulakshi and her father, it came as a shock that he would choose to take a step based on a ‘small’ incident. Vasu refused to change his mind, and Subbulakshmi’s father also asked her to leave a spouse that did not want her. With the support of a progressive father who chose his daughter’s happiness over societal pressures, the couple went ahead with the divorce. This was followed by the accident that led to his partial memory loss. This incident connects the prologue of the film as to why the politician, his son, and the henchmen were after Vasu.
Why did Subbulakshmi reopen the murder case?
A tired Vasu realized he had no hope of ever reconciling with Subbulakshmi as she was not keen on pursuing any relationship with him. She claimed he wanted her since he had no memory of the difficult marriage they shared, while she did. As a result, she was not keen on taking ten steps backwards just because the man suddenly changed his mind. Subbulakshmi had lost hope and trust since Vasu ended the marriage instead of trying to make it work through communication. Since he had no memory of the wedding or the awful marriage, there was a chance he would be able to recall everything and go back to resenting Subbulakshmi like before. This was a chance she was not willing to take, and she added she was happy alone and independent.
Sahana, Subbulakshmi’s friend, came by and revealed that she had reopened the case after Vasu’s accident. But this was purely out of guilt for not filing the case and her ex-husband taking it up without worrying about the consequences of his actions. Subbulakshmi took it upon herself to fight the case that was moved to Bangalore to avoid the influence of the politician and his power. Subbulakshmi made sure Vasu would never be informed about all of this to avoid the drama. She kept herself away from Vasu’s life and fought the battle alone because she wanted to. Vasu was recovering and was battling memory loss, and his friends were also not aware of Subbulakshmi finally taking a stand since she was the eyewitness. Vasu was happy to learn about these developments, yet this was not enough to bring the couple together.
Did Vasu and Subbulakshmi reconcile?
Vasu was a witness to Subbulakshmi single-handedly dragging the Tamil Nadu politician and his son to the court and not being afraid of their threats. The politician and his son were given life sentences based on the CCTV footage gathered from the signal where the incident took place. Subbulakshmi was happy that the case’s verdict was just, and that she could finally move on to a better life. She was not living in guilt anymore, and that was a triumph for her. Subbulakshmi may have loved Vasu, but his inability to understand her or reciprocate her feelings forced her to move away. She never planned to reconcile with Vasu since had immense trust issues after her marriage ended the way it did.
Miss You ended with Vasu being asked to narrate the story to an actor, the same one he had shared with the producer. The producer-actor duo was interested in his work, but unfortunately, the meeting had happened before the accident. Vasu did not remember the story, and the only person who heard it was Subbulakshmi. This was a convenient way to bring Vasu and Subbulakshmi back to the same table. It was obvious this subplot could lead to a revelation that would bring Subbulakshmi and Vasu together. Subbulakshmi was the first person who had heard the story from him. He’d shared it with her, keeping in mind she was his wife. Sharing his film’s story was his way of letting Subbulakshmi know about his dreams and plans for the future. However, Vasu and his friends were not sure if she would remember since she was always preoccupied with running the household. This again proves that Subbulakshmi and Vasu never synced mentally.
Vasu and Subulakshmi met at the coffee shop, which was featured in the prologue of the film. This scene at the coffee shop was to connect the start of the film to the epilogue. Vasu was recording the conversation for future reference, and Subbulakshmi agreed to help him one last time. The coffee shop served the same coffee he had tried before the accident, and he was shocked that it helped him jog all the memories of the last two years that supposedly disappeared after the accident. This had to be the lamest twist in the tale, and the required suspension of disbelief was at its peak. Subbulakshmi was narrating the story she had heard from him many months ago; to his surprise, she was able to recollect everything about it. The person he had disliked the most managed to remember crucial details of his life and was ready to help instead of being petty.
Vasu was grateful for her having remembered everything, and even though his memories were back, he revealed his feelings for her had not changed. Subulakshmi was not willing to believe it, since she was under the impression he liked the new improved version of her who was independent as opposed to the older one he despised. Her fears were genuine, and that could be the reason for her not being willing to give Vasu any hope regarding reconciliation. Vasu remembered his story ended with the idea of flowers fully blooming once in a lifetime. One needs patience to wait for the next bloom, indicating the fact that true love comes with patience. A fully bloomed flower was a true love, and it took a long while, including an accident for Vasu, to finally realize Subbulakshmi was his one true love.
Miss You’s ending was lazy and inconsistent since he had despised her during the marriage, and post the accident, he had hardly known her to make a marriage proposal. The only aspect that may have been a factor was the retelling of the entire story, which could have helped him understand his mistakes. His declaration of love was his way of apologizing to Subbulakshmi. Subbulakshmi having feelings for him despite his inconsiderate behavior shows the brainwashing done on women to accept their man and live with him till the end of time. The divorce was the right choice, but her still pining after Vasu and waiting for him to change his mind didn’t send the right kind of message. Subbulakshmi was happy and content that her life had come to a full circle since Vasu was willing to accept her; adding to that, there was a voice recorder that would help him retain the memories. The movie was a weird mixture of Hollywood films Vow and 50 First Dates, and hence Vasu and Subbulakshmi reconciling was inevitable. None of the obstacles mattered, only the fact that Vasu and Subbulakshmi found their way back to each other.
