Why did Subramanyam decide to produce guns?
In the village of Kuppam, people lived ordinary, normal lives. However, there was Tamma Reddy and his family members, Sharad Reddy and Viswas Reddy, who were so powerful that they terrorized the villagers with their dagger attacks. They exploited and abused the villagers and their families by spreading fear and chaos. Subramanyam, an ordinary man working as a lab assistant in a polytechnic college, also became a victim of their violence. One day, while Subramanyam was at work, he heard that some members of Sharad Reddy’s gang had abused a woman and were causing chaos on campus. Subramanyam was not the type to stand by and let such injustices happen. He believed that just because people feared the Reddys, it didn’t mean one should let bad things continue. He decided to take a stand and confronted and fought against all the members of Sharad Reddy’s gang. Naturally, Sharad Reddy was furious, and with Tamma Reddy’s influence, they pressured the principal to fire Subramanyam from his job. After all, how dare he stand against their injustice? How dare he lay hands on their people and defeat them single-handedly? They feared him.
But Subramanyam desperately needed that job, as he was the sole breadwinner for his family. On top of that, his father had borrowed money from all over the village and failed to repay it, which made the villagers furious. As a devoted son, Subramanyam couldn’t let his father face such humiliation. He promised the villagers that he would repay all the money on behalf of his father. But now, without a job and no income, Subramanyam grew restless. During this time, a suspended police officer named Palani informed Subramanyam about how guns can be sold for a significant amount of money. With his engineering experience, Subramanyam knew that if he could get the proper materials and machinery, he could manufacture guns locally. Initially, Palani was skeptical, but being in a similar financial situation for being suspended from the police station, he decided to join Subramanyam in this lucrative business of firearms manufacturing. Together, they decided to start an arms-dealing business and chose Tamma Reddy’s Talkies as their secret factory. They worked in private, making sure that no one had any clue about their secret business while they got to learn and develop their trade.
What did Subramanyam promise the villagers?
Subramanyam’s gun business created quite a buzz as he began dealing guns locally to various gangs, including the Reddys. After all, business is business. Eventually, his enterprise expanded, and he began delivering guns in secret to other villages, gang leaders, and even MLAs and ministers. The gangs, who previously only knew how to attack with daggers, mastered the use of guns to defeat their enemies, thanks to Subramanyam. In the meantime, one night, as he was working in the Talkies, Subramanyam overheard Sharad Reddy fighting some enemies in the factory. He didn’t realize who it was until he saw that it was his own father. Naturally, he was furious; Subramanyam couldn’t stand by and watch. He took matters into his own hands, single-handedly defeated all the gang members, and killed Sharad Reddy with his own hands. However, he didn’t understand why they were attacking his father until he found out that the Reddy family had taken over their family land. His father had borrowed money from everyone in the village to reclaim the land, and the case had gone to court. His father eventually won the case against the Reddys, which made them furious. That’s why Sharad Reddy had threatened to kill him. This wasn’t just the case for Subramanyam’s father; all the villagers faced similar issues. If they dared to stand against the Reddys, they were either killed or tortured, and they were often forced to migrate from the village. Subramanyam was both sad and furious upon hearing this. However, his victory against Sharad Reddy and his gang single-handedly created quite a buzz in the community, and people were thrilled to have a new hero in town. Naturally, Tamma Reddy and Viswas Reddy were furious. When Viswas Reddy came to confront him, Subramanyam killed him as well, in front of the entire village. He promised the villagers that they no longer had to live in fear. From now on, he would be their savior. He would protect them and reclaim their land from the Reddys.
Why did the police arrest Subramanyam?
Eventually, starting with his father’s land being returned to him, Subramanyam made the officer’s promise that within one month, they would ensure every villager’s land was given back. While everything seemed to be going well, Subramanyam’s father disapproved of the violence and the arms-dealing business. He made Subramanyam promise to abandon this violent path. However, as I told you earlier, Subramanyam’s booming business created quite a stir in the community, and eventually, the police traced the illegal arms dealing back to him. When they came to arrest him, the entire community blocked the road and prevented the police car from passing. Despite their efforts, Subramanyam was eventually arrested and transferred to another region in Chittoor. This transfer was planned by Tamma Reddy, who had a good relationship with the Chittoor minister. And there, Subramanyam was severely beaten during interrogation. Palani, being a loyal friend, couldn’t let this pass. When he found out about the situation, he made sure that the minister and all the police involved in the brutality would release Subramanyam. Fearing for their lives, the police and those in higher authority let Subramanyam go, and it foiled Tamma Reddy’s plan once again.
But Tamma Reddy wasn’t one to stay quiet. He needed to show his dominance and win the battle against Subramanyam. During the village festival, he showed up with his gang, as he knew Subramanyam would be there. They attacked Subramanyam’s wife and father. Subramanyam, who had promised his father he wouldn’t choose the path of violence, was torn and didn’t know what to do. Before dying at Tamma Reddy’s hands, his father told him not to let Reddy’s violence continue. He reminded Subramanyam that weapons can be used for protection too and that he should use them to protect the people of the village. With his father’s words in mind and his own willpower, Subramanyam finally stood up and fought back. Even though Tamma Reddy shot him, he wasn’t dead. Rising above the pain, Subramanyam managed to kill Tamma Reddy with his handmade, deadly weapon. So in the end, he managed to take down the entire Reddy clan. With Subramanyam’s protection, we can hope an end to injustice and newfound peace in the community.
