Spoilers Ahead

Yug Arya

Yug Arya, played by Raghav Juyal, really impressed me in this series. After watching him in Kill, I became a huge fan of his acting, and he certainly didn’t disappoint in Gyaarah Gyaarah. He takes on the role of a righteous cop with such conviction. When the series begins, we meet Yug as a young boy, linked to a case from 2001 involving a girl named Aditi who was abducted and later killed by a woman. Young Yug was playing with Aditi at a fair when she was kidnapped by this woman. Since he was the only witness, he provided crucial clues to the police to help solve the case. Fast forward 15 years, and in 2016, we see that the young Yug has grown up to become a police officer himself. It feels like he joined the force partly to solve this long-unsolved crime, driven by the desire to right the wrongs he witnessed as a child. Yug’s determination to solve the case is evident. He remembers seeing the kidnapper was a woman with polio-affected legs, but the police had wrongly accused a man named Raghav. Young Yug even gave clues to police officer Shaurya Anthwal in 2001. Through a walkie-talkie, this time the grown-up Yug, being a police officer, got through to Shaurya in the past and, with his help, eventually solved the crime. From then on, Yug was obsessed with solving crimes and seemed to want to change the past to prevent future crimes. He tackled cases from 1990, 1998, and 2001, all of which had been stalled or mishandled by higher-ups who either ignored the cases or blamed the wrong people to cover up their own failings. In the end, one of Yug’s senior officers, Vamika, suffered at the hands of a man wronged by the justice system, all in front of Yug. It became clear that Yug was determined to expose the corrupt higher-ups responsible for the deaths of Shaurya Anthwal and Vamika. The big question now is whether he will manage to manipulate time to change the past and future once again to save his seniors and catch the main villains. We’ll have to wait and see!

Shaurya Anthwal

Shaurya Anthwal, played by Dhairya Karwa, was another standout character. You might remember him from Uri: The Surgical Strike or Gehraiyaan. In Gyaarah Gyaarah, he plays a righteous cop from the past who teams up with Yug from the future to solve crimes. All three cases have personal links to him, which probably explains why he connected with Yug through time. Take the 1990 case, for instance. It involved a serial murderer known for “tie and die” murders. Shaurya’s own girlfriend, Palak, became one of the victims. However, the hairpin he gave her turned out to be crucial in solving the case. Before they could use it, though, Shaurya faced skepticism from his peers. When he started receiving clues from Yug in the future, some officers thought he might be involved with the killer. Otherwise, how would he know where and how the crimes would take place? The bluff about the walkie-talkie did not help his case, and his higher-ups thought he had likely gone mad. They even locked him up, which cost him his chance to save Palak. Despite this, the DNA found on the hairpin eventually led to the real perpetrator in the future. In the 1998 case, Shaurya was involved in a gang war investigation where a man was wrongfully accused and imprisoned. Shaurya’s lack of belief in the man’s innocence led to this injustice. In 2016, this wrongful accusation came back to haunt him when his junior, Vamika, was killed by this man who was angry at the justice system. And he was not the only one who was fed up with this corruption. It became clear that Shaurya was frustrated with the corrupt higher-ups too, who were more interested in rushing cases to their conclusion than solving them properly. When he questioned their methods and deceitful tactics, he was punished—his badge and gun were taken away, and he was even framed for accepting bribes. They wanted to silence him because his integrity was a threat to their corrupt practices. In the 2001 case of Aditi’s kidnapping, Shaurya tried to inform the police that the kidnapper was a woman, not a man named Raghav, but his warnings were ignored. His persistence probably made him a target, and it’s unclear what happened to him—whether he was murdered or not remains a mystery. One thing is clear: his dedication to justice, despite the obstacles, was both inspiring and tragic.

Vamika Rawat

Vamika Rawat, played by Kritika Kamra, was a crucial link between the past and present in the series. She worked under Shaurya Anthwal as his junior and later served as a senior DSP for Yug. It felt like she and the watch she wore, which belonged to Shaurya, were symbolic connections bridging times and these two officers. Even though Shaurya was her senior, Vamika admired him deeply and, perhaps, even had feelings for him that she never confessed. She seemed to aspire to live up to the person Shaurya was, which is why she tried so hard to go against the corrupt higher-ups, despite their efforts to shut her down or sabotage her operations. It felt like she was always holding onto the hope that Shaurya might return, and that’s why she never quite moved on from the uncertainty over what might have happened to him. Tragically, Vamika met a heartbreaking end. In an attempt to save someone from a frozen van, she ended up inside it. The van had been rigged with LPG, which exploded when she tried to enter. Her charred body was later found, a grim reminder of the dangers faced by those who strive for justice. Vamika’s end was particularly unfair and highlighted how even the righteous can suffer due to the actions of others. It’s a stark reminder of the challenges faced by good people working in a flawed justice system.

Sanjana Tiwari

Sanjana Tiwari, played by Gautami Kapoor, was a powerful figure in the series. As the mother of Aditi, the girl who was kidnapped and killed, she spent fifteen years protesting and demanding justice from a system that seemed to have failed her. Her relentless fight to get answers and find the killer highlighted the deep flaws in the justice system. Despite her efforts, the statute of limitations prevented the case from being reopened or properly investigated. This meant that even when the truth about the crime came to light, Sanjana was denied the justice she sought for so long. Her story underscores the tragic reality that sometimes the legal system’s constraints can leave victims and their families without closure.

Brahmdutt and Birju

They were a notorious father-son duo whose dark actions and twisted motives added a chilling dimension to the case. Their story unfolded as a tragic example of how a parent’s influence and unresolved personal trauma can corrupt and shape a child’s path in life. Brahmdutt was the driver of the Kalki 543 bus, a significant piece in a series of murders. Brahmdutt was initially thought to be the killer, but it was later revealed that he was covering up for his son. His choice to protect his son, even at the cost of his own integrity, demonstrated the lengths he would go to to preserve his family’s secrets. Brahmdutt’s actions were driven by a mix of guilt and a desperate need to protect Birju, which resulted in a tragic and morally complex situation. Birju, on the other hand, was the real perpetrator behind the “tie and die” murders. His background and upbringing played a significant role in his transformation into a serial killer. Birju’s mother worked late and left him alone with his father. During these periods, Brahmdutt’s abusive behavior towards his wife and the neglect he showed his son had a profound impact on Birju. One significant event was when Birju’s mother fled from home, tying up Birju as a form of punishment so that he did not scream, after which point he never saw his mother again. This traumatic incident left deep psychological scars on Birju. These unresolved issues, combined with the anger and resentment he had towards women who were independent or worked outside the home, fueled his violent tendencies. Birju’s specific pattern of targeting women who wore makeup was a distorted reflection of his hatred and his father’s abusive behavior. Birju tried to work at a paint shop but got high off the thinner. To help his son overcome addiction, Birju’s father, Bruhmdutt, took him along on his bus route. Unfortunately, the bus route, Kalki 543, became Birju’s hunting ground for women to murder. The turning point in unraveling the mystery came with the discovery of a crucial piece of evidence—a hairpin that had been used by one of Birju’s victims, Palak. This hairpin, which had been gifted to Palak by Shaurya Anthwal, helped in identifying Birju as the true murderer. The DNA found on the hairpin matched Birju’s, and the two cut marks on his neck confirmed his guilt. Even so, Brahmdutt tried to protect his son, Birju, and went to shocking lengths to do so. When a woman named Dilshan discovered that Birju was involved in the murders, Brahmdutt feared she would expose his son. To keep her silent and shield Birju’s crimes, Brahmdutt didn’t hesitate to get his hands dirty. He ended up killing Dilshan himself. This desperate and extreme action showed just how far Brahmdutt was willing to go to protect his son.

Shamshera

Shamshera’s character is a complex mix of tragedy and revenge, shaped by his past and the failures of the justice system. In 1998, Shamshera was falsely accused of a brutal gang war killing. Despite his pleas to Inspector Shaurya Anthwal that he had left his criminal life behind and wanted to create a better future for his daughter, Garima, Shamshera was wrongfully blamed for the murders. It felt like even though Shamshera had served his time in jail and was trying to live a decent life, his past caught up with him. When the case was reopened in 2016, Yug Arya and Shaurya’s investigation led them to believe that Shamshera was involved, largely because of misleading evidence. This led to a tragic mistake—Shamshera was hunted down, his daughter was killed in the process, and he was sentenced to 18 years in prison, from 1998 to 2016. Shamshera’s time in jail hardened him. Shamshera obsessively wrote his daughter’s name on his cell wall and learned to work as an electrician, all while plotting his revenge.

Shamshera’s anger was not just directed at the gangsters or the people who had wronged him, but also at the justice system that had failed him. When he was finally released from prison, Shamshera’s quest for vengeance became more focused and destructive. He kidnapped Sultaniya’s daughter, planning to exact his revenge on both the gangsters and the justice system. His plan was to trap her in a freezer van rigged with LPG. Although his primary target was the gangster Sultaniya, his actions led to another tragic outcome when Vamika Rawat, who was trying to save his girl, was killed in the van’s explosion. Shamshera’s character shows how a person’s circumstances and the failures of the system can lead to a cycle of violence and revenge. His quest for justice, mixed with his personal pain and anger, ultimately caused more suffering and tragedy.

Ritu Bhat

Ritu Bhat was the real killer of young Aditi, and she was a truly disturbed individual with a dangerous obsession. Ritu didn’t seem to have a clear motive for her crimes, or if she did, it was never really explained in the series. Ritu used her boyfriend, Raghav Nautiyal, as a cover for her crimes. She called for ransom money from his phone, but even after getting the money, she cruelly killed the innocent little girl. When Raghav tried to expose Ritu and save the child, Ritu attacked him and injected him with heroin, which led to his tragic death. This all happened back in 2001. Fast forward to 2016, when the case was being wrapped up. Yug Arya revealed to the media that the murderer was a woman who worked at a hospital. This seemed to make her nervous. And so, Ritu tried to mislead the police by suggesting that one of her nursing ward friends was the real culprit. But her polio legs gave her away, and the DNA evidence from the crime scene confirmed that she was the true murderer.

Shaurya’s father

Even though Shaurya’s father isn’t a major character in the series, his role felt quite significant. From what I gather, as a scientist, he cracked the mystery illusion of time and created a special watch that connects the past, present, and future. This watch turned out to be crucial in solving the cases, as it helped link Shaurya, Yug, and Vamika in ways that were essential to uncovering the truth. His invention was a key piece in solving the mysteries and bringing everything together.

Garima

Garima was the brave daughter who sacrificed her life trying to save her father, Shamshera. Even though she pleaded with Shaurya and insisted that her father was no longer a criminal, her cries for help went unheard. If only Shaurya had listened to her pleas for her father’s innocence, Garima might have survived, Shamshera wouldn’t have been wrongfully imprisoned, and Vamika’s tragic death might have been avoided.
