‘Grrr’ Movie Ending Explained And Recap: Are Rejimon And Haridas Dead Or Alive?

Grrr is a Malayalam language film that is named after the sound a lion makes. This is a rescue comedy drama about the lead characters getting trapped in a lion enclosure. The rescue attempt forms the plot of the film. The article below explains if the two men were killed by the lion or saved by the authorities in the nick of time.

Where was Rejimon?

Grrr began with the news of Rejimon’s kidnapping spreading across all the news channels. The news channel builds a narrative that claims he was a victim of honor killing since he was in a relationship with a woman from another caste, and hence, he was kidnapped by his girlfriend’s family. Rejimon was a business owner, and his girlfriend Rachana was a model in one of the ads of the brand. Her politically connected father learned of the relationship and disapproved of it. Rachana was adamant about wanting to be with Rejimon.

Why did Rejimon get drunk?

The movie goes to a flashback when Rejimon and Rachana had planned to elope, and he was asked to wait at a particular spot. Rejimon, who had attempted suicide a few years ago over a heartbreak, was getting anxious as her phone was switched off. Rejimon was under the assumption she’d ditched him over the caste matter; he got drunk in a local bar with his friend Anas. Few days ago, Rachana had pointed out Rejimon was not courageous enough to talk to her father and brother about the marriage. Later in the car, a drunk Rejimon got out of Anas’ car and walked into the Trivandrum Zoo. 

Why was Haridas’ wife angry at him?

Earlier that day at Haridas’ home, his wife was angry at him as he was not sure if he would be able to attend a family function. Haridas and his wife Mridula had had a love marriage, but now they were no longer on good terms with each other, as she claimed he’d never loved her. She felt neglected by him due to his work and blamed him for her not having a career of her own. Haridas was working for the Trivandrum Zoo, which was run by the state government. He was one day away from being suspended as there were accusations about the lion not being fed the right amount of meat as a portion of it was kept by the other guards. Since all of this happened under his supervision, the man was about to be temporarily suspended, as conveyed by his boss, Fauziya Fathima. 

What caused mayhem in the Trivandrum Zoo?

Later in the day, there was mayhem in the zoo as everyone working there headed towards the lion enclosure only to find a drunk Rejimon in it. Rejimon was upset over Rachana not showing up, and in that drunken stupor, to showcase his courage, he’d entered the lion enclosure just to prove he was not a weak person. The crowd was asked to step back as their noise would make the lion anxious, and it might end up killing Rejimon in that process. There was chaos, but a levelheaded Haridas informed his boss Fauziya to alert the police, the fire force, and the vet who would decide on the dosage of the tranquilizer needed to be given to the lion. As the workers tried to get the drunk Rejimon out of the enclosure, the lion came out of its den. The workers freaked out and ran away while Haridas got stuck in the enclosure with Rejimon, who was refusing to get out because of his drunkenness. 

Where was Rachana?

Rachana was stuck at her house as her father had learned of her plan to elope. Her phone was taken away, and she was forced to meet a prospective groom who was to arrive at any moment. The groom turned out to be Haridas’ brother-in-law, Mridul. Mridul was Mridula’s brother, and she was livid at her husband for having missed the function of meeting the prospective groom. Unbeknownst to anyone, Haridas and Rejimon were stuck in the enclosure as the latter was trying to make sure the lion did not harm them. 

What was the first course of action taken by the zoo authorities?

The fire force was called in to help rescue Rejimon and Haridas from the enclosure by tying a rope around both to lift them from the spot. Rejimon was still drunk, and a frustrated Haridas was unable to calm him. Rejimon was far from sober, and he was still hoping confronting a lion would prove his fearlessness. Haridas kept reminding him that the lion would kill if he ever got hungry. As expected, the lion walked up to them, smelling their belongings around the place. The lion may have been anxious about the presence of another being in his habitat, which is what made him approach the two. Rejimon was uncontrollable; as a result, he was attacked by the lion, and he received a deep gash on the chest. The fire force had to push the lion away into his den using a firehose. The deep gash on Rejimon’s body, followed by the water they were bombarded with, got him sober. The very next second, Rejimon freaked out over his actions and wanted to live for his girlfriend Rachana. 

How did Rachana find out Rejimon was in trouble?

Rachana contacted Anas through Mridul’s phone, who asked her to watch the local news to understand the gravity of the matter. Rachana, the next moment, on learning Rejimon was in trouble, left for the zoo. She was followed by her father and brother, who wanted to stop them from getting married. Mridula and Mridul also learned of Haridas being in trouble on the news, and headed towards the museum. A guilt-ridden Mridula was feeling bad about the entire argument they had been having for a while, as she was genuinely scared for his life. 

Why did the tranquilizer specialist miss his mark?

The tranquilizer specialist Thampi Himagiri was asked to come to the site as there was a lot of hype around his work. His first shot however did not hit the lion. It hit Haridas, because the specialist was a recovering alcoholic and was under treatment for it. He could only take aim properly if he drank two pegs of alcohol, and he was given the same by the zoo authorities out of pure desperation to save the two humans stuck. Thampi Himagiri quickly got his mojo back and shot the lion with the tranquilizer just seconds after the beast attempted to jump over Rejimon and Haridas. 

Did Haridas and his wife reconcile?

The lion was unconscious within seconds, but Haridas was heady and dizzy because the first tranquilizer had hit him. Mridula was still shaken up from the incident where she almost lost her husband. A flashback sequence indicated that Mridula was angry at the fact that Haridas had passed the state government exams, but she didn’t. This proved that Haridas was not a bad person, but she was jealous of him having a secure job while she was stuck being a housewife. The friction between them had only gotten worse until this life-threatening event simmered down all of the anger Mridula had for her husband. She felt guilty for picking fights with him, which only pushed him away and jeopardized their relationship. Haridas hadn’t been in the right state of mind ever since the tranquilizer hit him, and Mridula was upset about how the entire ordeal turned out. 

Who kidnapped Rejimon? 

Rejimon was being treated for the deep gash he got at the paws of the lion. Since Rachana went with him to the hospital, her father and brother were not happy with her move. Since this became a public case, the police were always around the hospital, yet Rachana’s father wanted to separate them forcefully. Rachana’s father was a politically connected man who had issues with his daughter marrying someone from another caste. Her father was a typical patriarch who wanted to control her life, including deciding the groom for her. 

Rejimon suddenly disappeared from the hospital, and this could be connected to the opening scene of the film. The media and the police everywhere were looking for Rejimon, and the narrative was that Rachana’s father may have kidnapped him to disrupt the wedding between him and his daughter. The news of Rachana and Rejimon’s relationship spread like wildfire when he and Haridas were stuck in the enclosure. The media were good at sniffing out these details, which worked against Rachana’s father and brother. They also kidnapped Rejimon’s friend Anas, hoping he would know where Rejimon was. 

Was Rejimon dead or alive?

The police had no option but to issue an arrest warrant against Rachana’s father and brother in the missing person case. Despite their power and influence, they could not shy away from the real matter at hand, which was that they were forcing their daughter to marry against her will. Her father having an issue with the relationship due to the caste was rightly brought up, and this was one of the few times Malayalam cinema has brought up the subject of families having issues with people marrying someone from another community. This was to let the audience know caste-based ostracization was not a new phenomenon, especially in Kerala society. Rachana’s father was losing his temper, because he was not the one who had kidnapped her. The man had a bad reputation in the city, which led to everyone believing he may have gotten rid of Rejimon just to get things his way. 

Grrr ended with Rejimon showing up at the factory along with Rachana, where Anas was held. The couple decided this was the only way to confront her family. This was a big deal for Rejimon because this was the first time he’d gathered the strength to meet her parents and declare his love for Rachana. He was backed by Rachana, who wanted to show the power of their unity. Rachana’s father was quick to acknowledge them as a couple. This happened because he wanted to avoid being in prison and tried his level best to separate his daughter from Rejimon. He also may have realized she was indeed happy with Rejimon. 

The epilogue of Grrr had Haridas, Mridula, Rejimon, and Rachana visiting the zoo as the lion was being moved to Dhanbad to mate with a lioness. The couple arrived to bid their good-byes even though Fauziya claimed the male lion would be back in no time. This was just the couple’s way of bidding goodbye to a beast that brought them back together. Rejimon got the courage to face his father. Haridas and Mridula reconnected after a near-death experience involving the lion. They were thankful to the beast.
