Netflix’s animated series, From Me to You, is a beautiful high school drama that will surely make you nostalgic of all those high school crushes, first loves, and heartbreaks. I personally related to the journey of all these lead characters portrayed in the anime series. There was something unexplainable about their innocence and how they tried to come out of their shells to become a better person. Nevertheless, we will be talking about those complex feelings in our recap of the first two seasons, so without further ado, let’s dive straight into it.
How did Sawako make friends?
Sawako Kuronuma is a shy girl who was treated like an outsider because of her “weird” personality. Many people thought Sawako knew black magic, while others believed Sawako was some kind of sorcerer. They even said that looking at her for more than three minutes would cause her to haunt them as if she were like Medusa. Despite being treated so badly by others, Sawako was always kind-hearted towards everyone. She tried to help people and make friends, but alas, she ended up scaring them with her appearance. To ease the burden on others, she did all the chores and made notes for them to help out, but it just wasn’t enough to change the situation. She was mockingly called Sadako. However, there was one boy who treated her right—Shota Kazehaya, one of the popular boys in school. From the very first day, Kazehaya asked her for directions to school, and their eyes met; he smiled and waved at her. It was like love at first sight for Kazehaya. He liked her instantly and always wanted to talk to her and be close to her. Sawako was shocked by his response, since he treated her like a normal person instead of being scared. As they started talking more at school, Kazehaya encouraged Sawako to come out of her shell, be herself, speak her mind, and tell people what she liked. Instead of being pushed around and treated like a doormat, Sawako found the courage to talk to people because of his encouragement. Through this, she was able to make her first two friends, Chizuru Yoshida and Ayane Yano. They saw the good in her and became her friends. Even more so, when rumors began circulating that Yano and Yoshida were players who treated people badly and that Sawako was the one spreading these rumors, they chose to give her the benefit of the doubt. They trusted that Sawako wouldn’t do anything to hurt them, and they were right. They witnessed how Sawako stood up for them by ensuring that no one spoke ill of them. This solidified their bond and showed the true strength of their friendship. And, of course, Kazehaya was always by her side.
How did Kurumi and Sawako become rivals?
We meet a girl named Ume Kurumizawa, who is stunningly beautiful—one of those girls who makes you wonder what kind of skincare routine she uses because she’s just that gorgeous. But beauty isn’t always enough; the heart wants what it wants, right? Kurumi has always had a huge crush on Kazehaya. Even in their old school, she acted cute and innocent, but whenever any girl wanted to get close to Kazehaya, she immediately tried to brainwash them by speaking ill of him, telling them lies like he had a girlfriend, so that his eyes would only be on her. She even changed schools just because Kazehaya did. After coming to the new school, she saw from a distance that Kazehaya was head over heels for Sawako. Even though people called Sawako spooky and haunting, Kazehaya still liked her. Kurumi made her best effort to show that she was friendly, kind, and beautiful, but Kazehaya did not care. This bothered Kurumi deeply. At first, she pretended to be Sawako’s friend, but she couldn’t keep up the act for long. She ended up telling Sawako that she loved Kazehaya and wouldn’t tolerate them being together. Sawako understood and respected that, but she couldn’t help her own feelings for Kazehaya either. Even during a school sports event when a guy named Ryu saved Sawako from being hit by a ball, Kurumi tried to manipulate Sawako by suggesting that maybe Ryu liked her and that perhaps Sawako liked Kazehaya only because he had been kind to her, nothing else. She should pay attention to other boys like Ryu. Eventually, Kurumi even gathered the courage to confess her feelings to Kazehaya, but when she realized that he only loved Sawako, she felt heartbroken. From that point on, she declared that she and Sawako would always be rivals. This love triangle added another layer to the story, showing the complexities of high school emotions and relationships.
What happened between Chizuru and Ryu?
Chizuru and Ryu had always been very close. They practically grew up together, and from Chizuru’s perspective, Ryu was like a brother. She couldn’t imagine having any romantic feelings for him. On the other hand, Ryu, the ever-truthful, shy, introverted, and mysterious guy, only had eyes for Chizuru. But guess who Chizuru liked? Ryu’s older brother, Toru. He was older, mature, and sensible—basically, everything Ryu wasn’t, and that’s what attracted her to him. Even though Ryu wanted to confess his feelings to Chizuru, she didn’t care because she only liked Toru. However, her heart broke when Toru came to their house with his fiancée, Honoka. Chizuru learned that they were about to get married. Chizuru had planned to buy a mini skirt to impress her long-time crush, but was devastated by the news. It was the reason why Chizuru didn’t come to see Toru off. Ryu understood that Chizuru was heartbroken, and despite his own feelings for her, he asked Toru to come one last time and meet Chizuru again. When they met, Chizuru confessed that she had always liked him. Toru had always been her favorite confidant and play buddy since childhood, who took care of her when no one else would. But Toru told her he liked her too, but only as a sister. Even though it hurt, Chizuru was happy to have made that confession. She wished him luck for his future and bid him farewell. And Ryu was there to offer her a shoulder to cry on to help her cope with the sadness of her unrequited love. But as tragic as it was, Ryu hid his own feelings from her while trying to comfort Chizuru.Â
What did Kento and Kurumi do?
Throughout season 1, Sawako and Kazehaya had feelings for each other, they were afraid to confess the same. Even at the start of season 2, a similar thing happened. There were lots of misunderstandings and communication gaps between them. Sawako always felt that because she was seen as some sort of weirdo by everyone, Kazehaya was kind to her out of pity, not because he liked her romantically. Even though her friends, Yano and Yoshida, tried to make her understand that wasn’t the case, she just couldn’t see the good in herself. Little by little, as they got into high school and their seating arrangement changed, Sawako managed to make new friends. People weren’t as scared of her personality anymore, and she even used her spooky behavior to her advantage by volunteering to be a ghost and a fortune teller at the school festival. But the problem was that Sawako making new friends made Kazehaya feel insecure and jealous. Until then, he thought he was the only one who understood her well and treated her kindly, which made him special to her. But now, she was making new friends. More misunderstandings happened when Kurumi told Sawako not to give Kazehaya handmade chocolates on Valentine’s Day because Kazehaya knew she had feelings for him and might not accept them. Knowing what Kurumi was like, I was not the least bit surprised. But the fact that Sawako listened to her honestly made my blood boil. Anyway, on the other hand, there was another guy in the class, Kento Miura, who started flirting with Sawako because her unique personality attracted him. When he found out she had feelings for Kazehaya, he tried to sabotage it by lying that Kazehaya had someone else in his life. Because of all these misunderstandings, Sawako and Kazehaya became more distant than ever. Kurumi and Kento, out of petty jealousy, didn’t want Sawako and Kazehaya to be together. But don’t you think it’s human to feel all these emotions? Kurumi and Kento didn’t have bad intentions; they were just being young and stupid.
What ultimately happened between Kazehaya and Sawako?
When Kazehaya finally gathered enough courage to confess his love for Sawako for the first time, Sawako misunderstood again, as Sawako thought Kazehaya liked her as a friend, not in a romantic way. But after talking to Yano and Yoshida, she finally found the courage to express how important Kazehaya was to her. She told him everything—how he made her nervous, how her heart beat faster whenever he was around, how he changed her for the better—all those gushy feelings. And without saying anything, Kazehaya hugged her. During the bustling school festival, they seemed busy, but in that moment, in front of everyone, Kazehaya expressed that he liked her romantically. He told her that from the very first day of school, he had had feelings for her, and he would love for them to go out and for her to be called his girlfriend. All the girls in school were obviously heartbroken. Kazehaya was the popular guy everyone wanted attention from, and they couldn’t believe he chose this “spooky” girl over them. Some even thought Sawako had cast some kind of spell on him to make him fall for her, but Kazehaya strongly stood against all these rumors and said that nothing could be further from the truth. The way Kazehaya acknowledged his feelings in front of everyone made Sawako see how serious he was. For the first time in a long time, Sawako felt seen, valued, and not like a burden anymore. She realized she was someone who could be loved. Her friends, Yano and Yoshida, cheered for her as well!
At the end of Season 2, even Kurumi acknowledged that Sawako and Kazehaya were meant to be together, and she made peace with it. She even slapped Kento for ruining their moment by telling him not to come between Sawako and Kazehaya anymore. For those who might have hated Kurumi for a long time, by the end, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. She did everything she could to win Kazehaya’s love, and when it didn’t happen, she was okay after all. Kurumi even thanked Sawako, as because of her, she found the courage to express her own feelings to Kazehaya, something she never could have done otherwise. Well, that didn’t mean she was happy for them, but she promised not to be a troublemaker anymore. We have all been Kurumi once in our lives, and that’s what makes her even more relatable, honestly.
On the other hand, Ryu finally expressed what he felt for Chizuru. From Chizuru’s expression, one could easily tell Chizuru already knew, and she didn’t want Ryu to say it because it would have made things awkward between them. It would be interesting to see what happens with Chizuru and Ryu in the next season. And also what the future holds for our new couple, Sawako and Kazehaya, as well.
