There’s a Bible verse that says, “The truth will set you free.” But what if it does not? Sometimes, the truth can be so harsh that people hide it to avoid bad consequences. In the Netflix series Desperate Lies, we see Liana and Tomas doing just that. They hide a shocking truth about Liana’s pregnancy. Liana was impregnated by two different men, which resulted in Marcos and Mateus, her twins, having two different fathers. Some might call it a miracle, but for Liana, it was a nightmare. She kept this secret for 18 years. Tomas went along with the lie—to protect the kids—until he stopped doing so. He killed Oscar, the man who assaulted Liana, and ended up in jail and suffering for years. Tomas was filled with anger and decided to reveal the truth, not to clear his conscience but to ruin lives. He used the truth to further his own political agenda by painting himself as a seeker of justice who had to lie and suffer for the betterment of his family. So, what happened next? How did the children cope with this revelation? Did the truth ruin their lives, or did it backfire on Tomas? Desperate Lies‘ ending answers these questions. We get to see the impact of the truth on everyone involved and whether it brought freedom or just more pain.

Did Marcos accept the truth?

Until now, in the series Desperate Lies, we have seen how Tomas, after coming out of jail and wanting to become a political leader, planned to reveal the truth. He didn’t want to do it for his family or for the betterment of his sons, but to improve his political image. He wanted to paint himself as a victim who suffered to protect his wife’s supposed cheating, not acknowledging that Liana had been assaulted. Tomas just wanted to be a father to Mateus, not to Marcos. This became clear. Liana, a mother who protected this hidden truth for so long, decided to come clean. She realized the lie wouldn’t protect their sons forever because they would eventually find out from their father, and it would be too hard for them to accept. After all, 18 years is a long time, and their lives have been built on lies. Suddenly learning the truth could ruin everything, but Liana was willing to take that chance. So, she finally told Marcos and Mateus the truth. She explained how Tomas was the one who first cheated on her and left her, which led to the night she was assaulted by Oscar, Marcos’ father, when she went out partying at his bar to let loose.

After the assault, she got pregnant and initially wanted to abort because she was unable to accept the fact that one of her children was the result of an assault, but she couldn’t go through with it. She just wanted the baby so much. After giving birth, Tomas gave Marcos up for adoption, but Liana couldn’t let the brothers be separated. Without asking Tomas, she took Marcos back because she believed they belonged together. Tomas always resented Marcos but went along with it until he decided to reveal the truth now. Marcos was devastated to learn his father was an assaulter who got murdered. Not knowing his real father and hearing the harsh truth was too much. But he also realized how much Liana and Mateus wanted him. Even if the world, his father, and Tomas’s family seemed to reject him, he would always have Mateus and Liana by his side. So, he decided to accept the truth and move on.

What happened at Tomas’ wedding?

The truth did set Liana free, both emotionally and from her troublesome marriage. She and Tomas ended up getting a divorce. They decided that both children would stay with Liana, and only Mateus would carry Tomas’s surname, not Marcos. Everything seemed to be going right. Liana even forgave Oscar and his family. However, Marcos struggled to accept that his father was a criminal, but he decided to give it a try. On the day of Tomas and his lover Claudia’s wedding, Mateus went to visit his father, while Marcos went to meet his grandfather, Oscar’s father. Marcos just wanted to learn a little more about his father. But we see that seeing Marcos triggered something in Oscar’s father, and he remembered that Tomas had killed Oscar. He wanted revenge. He took a gun and went to Tomas’s wedding to confront him and kill the murderer of his son. But Marcos saved the day. He stopped him, not to protect Tomas but to protect his brother Mateus.

Marcos knew the pain of losing a father and didn’t want that to happen to his brother as well; he just loved him that much. He managed to calm Oscar’s father down and take the gun away. This incident, however, backfired on Tomas. The congressman who used to support Tomas realized that his shady business wouldn’t get him far in politics and that Tomas would be a liability. Mateus also saw how hypocritical his father was. Tomas pretended to be better than everyone else but never admitted he was the real cheater, liar, and murderer. He had a complete disregard for what Liana went through, always tormented Marcos, and never accepted him as his own son. Mateus realized that Tomas, on paper, might be his father, but they had no emotional connection. Tomas didn’t deserve to be in his life. In the end, Tomas ended up losing the boy he fought so hard for, only because of his own selfishness

Tomas’s main agenda was to ruin Liana’s life, but instead, she found strength by sharing her story and raising awareness about superfecundation on social media. Her followers grew, and she became successful, something Tomas had wanted for himself. But instead of success, Tomas lost everything—his career, his family, everything. He couldn’t accept this and decided to set fire to their house, trying to end their lives. However, Tomas was caught, arrested, and sent back to prison. In the end, the man who wanted to ruin others’ lives ended up ruining his own. We see that in prison, Tomas found a new role as a leader of spiritual talks among the inmates and gained new followers there. Meanwhile, Liana kept busy with book tours. She also wanted to start a relationship with this teacher of Mateus and Marcos named Dante. It would be long-distance, but she was willing to give it a try because she also deserved happiness. Mateus and his girlfriend Julia, on the other hand, decided to attend the same school for further studies. As for Marcos, it is hard to guess what future has in store for him. Maybe Marcos will follow in his father’s footsteps and become a football player like him. But, for now, Marcos is learning to cope with the harsh truth that has affected him deeply, but he finds strength in his family’s support. So, in Desperate Lies‘ ending, despite the pain caused by Tomas, Liana and her children found ways to move forward and build new lives for themselves.
