The trajectory of their relationship is covered in the story of Culpa Tuya.

Spoilers Ahead

What was Noah and Nick’s plan?

Culpa Tuya began with Noah’s mother, Rafaella, and her stepfather celebrating her 18th birthday with her friends Jenna and Lion. Nick had been sent to San Francisco to intern with a law firm and wasn’t around for Noah’s celebratory moment. Nick was the son of Noah’s stepfather, making them step-siblings. But this weird familial bond did not stop them from getting romantically involved, and so far only their friends were aware of that.

The parents became aware of their relationship at the end of the last film, Mia Culpa, and sending Nick to San Francisco was their first plan of action to keep their kids from making any more mistakes. Nick showed up at the birthday party to surprise Noah, and just like before, they couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. Nick wanted to continue working as a lawyer in Spain while Noah graduated from high school. Both were going to start a new phase in their lives, and they discussed their relationship. They felt nothing would change as long as they remained loyal and were not insecure.

Why was Noah’s mother tense?

Nick inherited an apartment from his grandfather, just like any other rich kid does, and he hoped Noah would move in with him because he wanted them to live life on their terms. Both were not afraid to go public with the relationship, but the fear of how it would reflect on their parents made them refrain from doing so. Noah was not keen to move in with Nick and decided to stay in the college dorm. Somehow her mother’s mantra of being emotionally and financially independent kept ringing in her head, and living with a man, according to her, would be wrong at that moment.

Noah’s mother, Rafaella, confronted her and admitted to having known of the relationship between her and Nick. She was not happy since the paparazzi would have a field day with it, and it would put Rafaella and William’s businesses on a standstill. She admitted to having manipulated Noah to live in the college dorm, as it would allow her to explore relationships outside of the home. Rafaella was concerned, since she did not want her daughter to make the same mistake she did by marrying her father, and the tiff between Noah and her mother continued.

Who were the new people in Noah and Nick’s life?

Noah’s new roommate was Briar, who claimed to have had a difficult school life where she attempted suicide after her relationship went kaput. Both began to enjoy each other’s company, but when Nick showed up he was shocked to meet the new roommate. Nick and Briar had a history, but it wasn’t shared with the viewers this early in the film. Briar on learning of Noah and Nick’s relationship, tried to sabotage it by pushing her roommate towards the college counselor, Michael.

Nick joined his father’s firm as an intern and was introduced to a young lawyer named Sofia Zabal. Both became fast friends as she understood the pressures of being from a rich family and the pressure to prove themselves. Nick chose to keep Sofia away from Noah to avoid any bouts of jealousy, but they eventually met. Noah was not sure if this was a good sign since he’d made a decision for her which she was not comfortable with. Nick was heading to London with Sofia as a part of a case. Sofia and Nick became closer as friends after they celebrated their win in London.

What was Anabel’s plan?

Nick and his mother Anabel had a tense relationship as he believed she had abandoned him. He shut down all communication with her and hence she tried to get Noah’s help, since she understood the pain of losing one’s parents. Noah’s father had left her, and Rafaella was left to fend for herself and their daughter. Anabel got into Nick and his father’s mansion and stole some of their toothbrushes. She claimed her son had been fed lies by his father and grandfather. Anabel additionally requested Noah to deliver a letter from her to Nick. She hoped hearing the tale from her side would soften him up so he would be willing to meet her.

Anabel also revealed that her ex-husband, William, Nick’s father and Rafaella were in a relationship long before the divorce, hence planting a seed of doubt in Noah’s mind. Noah did not reveal her role as a messenger, and Nick tore up the letter before he could read it, proving he was not in the mood to reconcile with Anabel.

Why did Noah decide to take a break?

Noah was again being confronted by her mother, Rafaella, who had asked her to be smart about choosing a partner and not to stick to the first person that walks into her life. Noah believed her mother was going out of her way to end her relationship with Nick. Rafaella wanted her daughter to build an identity before settling down. Noah also revealed she was aware of the affair her mother had had with William, thereby pointing a finger at her mother’s sense of morality. Back in her dorm, Briar left Noah with Michael, and they shared a moment when he was leaving. This was witnessed by Nick, who began to question his girlfriend’s loyalty. Since they were not meeting as much as before, the insecurity was creeping in, and Noah was frustrated at Nick’s changing behavior. Since both were going through mental and emotional changes, she suggested they take a break for seven days and make a decision about their relationship on the night of the gala hosted by William and Nick’s grandfather. Nick revealed he’d been offered a position in London, and he was considering it, which broke Noah’s heart.

What happened on the night of the gala?

On the night of the gala, Noah showed up to support the family with Briar, only to antagonize Nick. Noah revealed she was aware of Nick’s past with Briar and was livid about it. These revelations came out of nowhere, and they were added at the last minute just for the sake of generating friction between the couple, who were on the verge of breaking up. Noah and Nick’s friends Jenna and Lion were going through tough times as well. Jenna’s father was rich, and Lion was acting insecure about that detail. He distanced himself from Jenna, and she eventually broke up with him on the night of the gala. She claimed Lion never loved her for her personality and refused to see beyond the money aspect. The breakup shook Lion, and he decided to be a better person, stepping up and looking at the situation from Jenna’s perspective.

Briar was still livid at Noah because of what happened between them many years ago. This subplot was also added at the last moment, and Briar being the vamp was unnecessary. In a rush it was revealed that Briar and Nick were in a relationship for two months, during which they got into an accident. Nick claimed he was asked to leave while she blamed him for abandoning her and their unborn fetus that died as a result of the crash. Nick was the reason Briar attempted suicide, as mentioned to Noah in the beginning of the film. She seemed to be doing better now but witnessing Noah and Nick together brought out the worst in her. It led to her setting up situations that would end her ex’s relationship with her current roommate. Since Briar was young and emotionally charged, her actions to some extent were understandable.

Anabel gatecrashed the gala and demanded to be heard out. The family moved to the garden when she revealed the letter she’d asked Noah to deliver. Anabel also revealed that William was her daughter Maggie’s biological father, and she had a paternity test to prove that. Anabel turned out to be selfish as it seemed that she wanted to get close to Nick to get William to pay for Maggie’s child support. Even though his father and grandfather played a role in demonizing Anabel, this stunt she pulled proved Nick right, as his mother never bothered to stay in touch after the divorce. Nick was angry at Noah for not letting him know about her involvement in the letter showing up, and he began to accuse her of hurting him. Both were already in pain since their breakup was now inevitable; this scenario made it worse as he felt the one person he trusted had betrayed him.

Noah was the reason Anabel could get inside Nick’s home, and her apologies had no meaning to him. He made up his mind about their relationship and broke up with Noah at that moment, kissing Sofia out of spite. Nick had a reason behind his moves, and it was pure rage. He did not take the time to process his emotions, he just acted the way he did since he was aware Noah was jealous of Sofia. Noah and Nick were still immature at this point, and their reactions proved that.

Did Noah and Nick reconcile?

Nick left the party with Lion, who was trying to knock some sense into his best friend’s head. He revealed he found clarity when Jenna broke up with him. Lion claimed Jenna loved him for who he is, and he finally had a eureka moment about that when she broke up. He added these anecdotes to make Nick realize that small mistakes would not matter in the grand scheme of things, which means his reason for breaking up with Noah was stupid. Nick reached her dorm to apologize to her, but she was nowhere to be found. He probably was in a state to hear her out and make the relationship work. Lion’s words got through to him, and he wanted to make things right between him and her.

Noah headed to Michael’s place since she was shaken. She did not go to Briar, since she was the one who pushed Nick to break up with her. She assumed Michael, being a counselor, would be able to understand her situation and be a shoulder to cry on. Since she was emotionally vulnerable, Michael let her in and switched off her phone so that she would not go back to Nick.

Michael had feelings for her, but this was not the right way to express them, since she was emotionally in a bad place. He wanted to take advantage of a vulnerable Noah, and he was successful, since they slept with each other. Noah didn’t resist his advances as she believed her relationship was over since Nick did not think twice before kissing Sofia in front of her. Noah felt bad, guilty and left Michael’s room on the same night. She wanted to process the mistake she made and realized things between her and Michael also would not be the same. She knew she’d made a mistake and walked out to find Nick waiting for her outside her dorm building in the rain. Both did not talk about it as they were aware of the mistakes they made in haste, and there was no going back to normalcy post this. Their relationship took a sudden turn, and only time will decide if they could ever reconcile.

Culpa Tuya ended with William and Rafaella admitting to having made mistakes in the past, which snowballed into Nick and Noah’s lives being ruined as well. The parents were so busy keeping up their image that they did not expect Anabel to walk over and reveal their past. Noah and Nick could no longer trust their parents, and most likely they would stay away from them to rebuild their lives. Noah visited her father’s grave in the end. She had begun to visit her father’s grave frequently since she never got a chance to know him growing up. She missed her father and wished they had time to make their relationship better. Her relationship with Rafaella seemed like it was through, unless the mother and daughter reconciled, discussed, and processed their concerns. She saw Nick’s writing on her father’s tomb, which stated, he ‘would be her light in the darkness.’ It was not made clear when Nick wrote these words. It could be after their breakup and might be his way to reconcile with her. Noah, at this point, was emotionally drained and most likely not keen on getting back together with Nick. The third and final film in the trilogy, Our Fault, or Culpa Nuestra is slated to release in 2025, and we assume Noah would focus on her studies as her mother wanted and not let Nick or his memories bother her.
