‘Bel-Air’ Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: Did Will Go To Las Vegas For The Basketball Match?

Bel-Air Season 2 ended with Carlton coming out to the school and his family about his drug addiction, which leads to him losing ‘The Founder’s Award’ awarded by the school to the best student based on merit. Just minutes before the award was announced, Ashley had seen him in a fit of rage because he was caught taking drugs and he threatened her. This behavior made him come clean and want to ask for help. The path from here on, with the children now looking forward to the summer, is what the next season is going to be about.

Spoilers Ahead

Was Carlton out of rehab?

Carlton was in rehab the whole summer, and he was waiting to come home after a successful stint. Only this time he did slightly break the rules by falling in love with Amira, a fellow rehab mate. The rules were strict against people attending rehab getting personally involved with each other. Both kissed on his last night at rehab as his parents, along with Will, would soon come to pick him up. At the dinner table, only Ashley had tough questions for him, keeping in mind how Carlton treated her before he confessed and later left for rehab. Carlton claimed to be feeling better, but the journey had been a long one, and he noticed there were going to be a lot of changes around him soon.

What were Will and Lisa doing in the summer?

Will and Lisa were working at the club at Bel-Air, which means they were meeting many rich people. That would mean they were networking with many rich people who would help them with any kind of assistance he or Lisa would ask for. Lisa was still working on her swimming lessons as she planned to compete at the nationals. Will gets in touch with Quentin Harrison, an MMA fighter turned investor who mentors many African American kids to help them with setting up businesses. Will was in awe of the man, and Quentin was being a good influence on the kid. Thanks to Quentin, he began to look for other options to make it to college other than just relying on basketball scholarships.

Who did Will run into?

As Carlton and Will were catching up on their lives during the summer, the latter ran into his father, who was now back in the city working as a food delivery man. Lou wanted to talk to his son, but Will backed away, showing his discontentment towards his father, because their last conversation had not ended. Carlton was by Will’s side as he began to think about Lou more often, and it affected his game. The Banks family was astonished to find out Lou was back, and Will hoped to not have any contact with his biological father.

Why was Quentin angry at Will?

Quentin was angry at Will because he had missed the meeting set up for the children from the African American community. Quentin regularly held workshops, mentorship programs, and seminars for the children as his way of helping kids from his community in the hope of financially empowering them. He wanted to make sure the children from his community escaped poverty. The man saw potential in Will, but he was livid at him, making his practice go long as an excuse. Since he wasn’t aware of Will’s willingness to work hard, he had to dismiss the kid as being just like any other privileged child who was just hanging around for some contacts. Will could not convince him otherwise.

What did Jazz convey to Hillary?

At the annual Juneteenth party held at the Banks’ home, Jazz, Hillary’s ex, runs into her after their bitter breakup. Hilary broke up with him over a slight misunderstanding where she saw him intimately dancing with another girl. She chose to not ignore that and considered it a sign for her to pursue her ex-boyfriend LaMarcus, a pro-NFL football player. As they returned from a long vacation in Europe, things were turning out good for the two, both personally and professionally. Hillary was becoming a fashion + food influencer. Jazz appeared at the party and told her he knew she would run away from LaMarcus as well at the crucial moment, indicating he felt she threw away a good relationship with him and chose to find comfort in an old boyfriend.

Did Carlton back his cousin?

Carlton and Will were having a bad day. Many people who were set to meet Carlton to help him out with his Princeton application had backed out after learning about his rehab stint. Will was also upset about Quentin not taking him seriously. At the Juneteenth party, Carlton came forward to let Quentin know Will is the real deal, and that he came up out of nowhere, his upbringing being different from the Banks children. He stood up for Will and his perseverance to do things outside the box, and Quentin was finally convinced Will was a hardworking kid.

Why was Vivian mad at Carlton?

Vivian was angry at Carlton for not saying anything about Amira to any of them. She knew her son and Amira had met during their rehab, and for her to be invited to the party would mean her son and the girl were more than just friends. Vivian felt betrayed by the fact that her son chose to lie and broke an oath during rehab. This made Vivian not trust her son from here on, and it’s likely anything Carlton mentioned would be seen through the lens of suspicion. Carlton was a better person now, and he apologized to his mother for keeping Amira a secret. Carlton was not having a good day, but he was trying to not get anxious about the situation.

Did Philip and Will have a conversation?

Philip and Will have a conversation about his mind getting distracted and him wanting to look beyond basketball for other options. Since he was in Bel-Air, Will was surrounded by opportunities and there was indeed a life to be lived outside. This made Will get in touch with his father. Lou was open about his life as a basketball player, and how he’d enjoyed the attention. This was an indication of the fact that Lou had wished to have skills beyond just the game of basketball. This made Will think of many options for his career. Will always had Uncle Philip as his mentor, and he was always ready to help him out with any kind of dilemma. It was indeed Uncle Phil’s idea to maybe converse with Lou and make an attempt to develop a good relationship with him.

Did Will go to Las Vegas for the basketball match?

Will had been practicing with Doc Hightower all this while for a big match in Las Vegas. Will showed all the skills of a talented basketball player, but the itch to try something else never left his mind. He was a young boy who had many talents in him to discover other than the sport he was good at, and he was willing to explore it. Will’s conversation with his uncle Philip and father Lou helped him get a perspective on what his future should be. The episode ended with Will deciding not to go to Vegas for the game as he wanted to stay back and work on his entrepreneur skills. Doc Hightower may not have taken this well, as he felt these matches would help him get drafted for bigger leagues. Since Will had other plans, his coach Doc may have had to step aside for the first time and let the boy spread the wings and explore.

As Carlton arrived to pick Will up, it was revealed both cousins plan to start a business. Both had no clear business ideas, but this was a start, as both had an end goal to achieve. Will wanted to find out if he could be more than just a sportsman like Quentin Harrison. Carlton wanted to build up his resume for Princeton on his own terms and not rely on alumni interviews anymore.
