‘Agents’ Movie Ending Explained: Will There Be Any Sequel?

I don’t think it’s my place to talk about how amateurish director Aditya Awandhe’s thriller—Agents—looks in every aspect. From the acting to the direction to the script to the action, everything in this film seems to be put together by five-year-olds. Anyway, my job is to explain Agents for you, especially the ending of it. That’s exactly what I’m going to do here, while also looking into the odds of it getting a sequel (I hope not, though).

Spoilers Ahead

What Happens In The Movie?

Agents is set on the small island of Mauritius. The Chinese government, which is an ally of the Mauritian government, is about to bring in an artifact named ‘Jade’ for exhibiting purposes. For such a high-value item, the security department is on high alert. A group of agents, led by our hero, Nad, is tasked with the protection of Jade when it arrives. Unfortunately, upon its arrival, the artifact gets stolen by a group of criminals when Nad and his team are ambushed all of a sudden. Quite naturally, that’s terrible news for the Mauritian government, and especially the security department. Nad’s boss, Vincent, is furious, and he doesn’t want to hear any justification. Our hero now has to fix the whole situation by recovering ‘Jade’ in order to prevent bad blood brewing between the two governments.

Who stole Jade?

Since this is an explanatory essay and (hopefully) y’all have come here to read this after watching the movie, there’s no point in holding back this discussion. It was Nad who actually took ‘Jade’ right after it was landed. He didn’t steal it for any personal gain, though. Our man has been secretly investigating this gangster, Raul, and all his wrongdoings. He is keeping things under wraps, especially because Vincent is in cahoots with Raul. Nad does have a personal stake here—his father, who was also a security agent, was framed by Raul with corruption charges. Nad’s main agenda is to expose the whole conspiracy, but there’s an undeniable revenge angle here as well.

How does the Chinese government react?

Obviously the Chinese government was not going to sit tight and wait for the Mauritian government to find ‘Jade’ for them. So they put one of their finest on the case—the prodigy, Agent Yuan. However, it doesn’t take long for us to realize the whole purpose behind introducing a female agent is giving our hero some scope for romance. Sadly, the writing of Agents is so bad that you don’t feel anything for Nad and Yuan, leave aside wanting to root for them. Not to mention, the bare minimum acting effort from the actors doesn’t help much. Anyway, Yuan has no idea about what Nad did, so she goes on to do exactly what’s expected from her—thoroughly investigating everything related to the ambush from where ‘Jade’ was taken. Unlike Nad, she doesn’t know the name of Raul, so she keeps looking into several people—mostly criminals—as suspects, and also considers foul play in the security department. She’s right about the latter, though, given we have a rotten apple killer, Vincent, sitting at the top.

What’s cooking in Raul’s den?

Our cartoonish villain has to be the worst thing about the whole thing. Raul is an erratic psychopath, but the actor’s over-the-top performance, along with the terribly written dialogue, reduces him to nothing but a caricature. The man is understandably mad when he doesn’t get ‘Jade’ after ambushing Nad and the agents. He points a finger at his own gang members even though they have nothing to do with it. Meanwhile, one of the gang members, Bravo, gets arrested by the coastal police while moving one of their illegal shipments. Fearing Bravo might end up in the hands of national security, Raul plans to kill Bravo in custody—unsurprisingly, he has half of the government and police in his pocket. But Bravo’s brother Dwayne pleads with Raul not to kill Bravo, as they’ve been nothing but loyal.

Coastal police predictably call our agents, Nad and Yuan, to interrogate Bravo if it can help them solve the case (not that it matters, as Nad already has ‘Jade’ with him). The agents do exactly that, and through Bravo, they are able to get a hold of Dwayne and, eventually, the elusive Raul’s location—somewhere around Le Barachois. After a lot of badly filmed car and boat chases, our agents are finally able to reach there.

Does Nad take his revenge?

The movie was always going into a big showdown between the good guy, Nad, and the bad guy, Raul. When the two finally come face to face, Raul expectedly starts behaving like an overconfident buffoon. Now that he has the intel that Nad’s looking into him and planning to upstage him, he orders Nad to give him ‘Jade’ away if he wants to avoid Raul’s wrath. Nad was never going to do that, so to make things a bit challenging, Raul practically abducts Yuan. The deal now is that Nad has to go give ‘Jade’ away if he wants Yuan back. What’s baffling here is Yuan suddenly being portrayed as a damsel in distress. Only a while ago, we saw her taking care of thugs when Nad was unable to. Did the director suddenly forget that she is also a special agent, maybe even superior to Nad? Anyway, it’s futile even raising these questions here. We knew what was going to happen—Nad was going to fight everyone and set Yuan free. Thankfully, Yuan also participates in the fight, getting back into the original groove of the character.

Agents ends with Raul getting arrested and our lead pair being congratulated for their work. We don’t get any more of the romance, though, not that we were asking for it. As far as the possibilities of a sequel go, Raul is not dead yet, and he has already promised to take his revenge—so it’s all but certain that the director wanted to leave the door open here. In case you’ve enjoyed Agents, it’s definitely good news for you.
