The Curro killer is causing quite the mayhem in 1992 as he keeps claiming victims with a flamethrower. We’re going to break down all the deaths and the reasons behind them in the article. For a detailed recap and examination of the ending, please click here.Â
Spoilers Ahead
Alvaro
Alvaro’s death has to be the most unfortunate one because he had absolutely nothing to do with the 1992 expo, which was the root of all evil. What’s even worse is he was actually a good man who loved his wife and was always there for his friend Richi. Alvaro was just unfortunate to be in the same building where Roberto Valcarcel died thanks to an explosion. Quite naturally, his wife Amparo couldn’t just sit around, and needed justice for her husband. Richi also joined the quest as he owed Alvaro his life. Amparo and Richi’s investigation then uncovered many things, and sets up the whole story from there.
Roberto Valcarcel
We don’t get to see much of cheap clothing merchant Roberto Valcarcel, but we know for a fact that he died in an explosion at his office. Of course, the explosion was not just an accident. The killer set it off in order to kill the businessman. Since we haven’t seen the death, it is impossible to say whether the explosion killed him or the flamethrower, but my guess would be the latter. The killer only staged the explosion so that it didn’t look suspicious. Roberto’s death is, of course, the first one in the series of murders. It is also the result of a revenge quest by the Curro killer.
Domingo Granjero
About to have a nice erotic evening, Dominingo Granjero gets the shock of his life when the Curro killer barges into his hotel room and uses the flamethrower on him. This is the first time we see the killer in action, and we realize that this guy means business. Granjero was also part of the 1992 expo in Seville, just like Roberto, and both of them were involved in a huge cover-up job of a murder. Quite naturally, Granjero was also part of the killer’s revenge mission. The woman who was murdered was the killer’s mother, by the way.
Jose Zamorano
Back in 1992, Zamorano was the commissioner. Obviously he had a lot of power during the expo. Not to mention, he was as sleazy as Roberto and Domingo. The group of five also included future minister of the interior Esteban Palacios and future tech businessman Fernando Victoria, who used to work for Zamorano back then. During one of the wild party nights they used to have, Esteban accidentally killed sex worker Margarita, and to save their skin, these men covered up the whole thing. Martha didn’t get justice, and her teenage son witnessed everything. Thirty years later, Zamorano has lost his memory and is spending his days at an old age facility. However, that doesn’t wipe out his sins from the past, as we see the killer not at all hesitating to use the flamethrower on the man.
Rosa
On the night of Marga’s murder, Rosa and Azu—both sex workers and Marga’s best friends—were also at the expo pavilion. They both knew what happened but were forced to keep their mouths shut because of their social status. When Marga’s son Victor got completely burnt while trying to recover his mom’s body, Rosa started taking care of the boy. She continued to do that for decades until Victor turned into the Curro killer and went on his revenge quest. Did Rosa try to talk him out of it? Probably yes, but it was futile. Thanks to an explosion at Fernando Victoria’s office, Rosa got fully burnt and ended up in the hospital. When Victor visits her, she asks for death, and he obliges. I don’t think Victor wanted to kill Rosa. What he did to her in the end is actually him showing gratitude to the woman who helped him all these years.
Commissioner Robledo
Commissioner Robledo might come off as a by-the-book police officer who is uninterested in Richi and Amparo’s investigation into the Curro killer. But eventually he turns out to be someone who actually wants to solve the case and find out who’s behind the Curro mask. Too bad that he has to lose his life in the process. He probably shouldn’t have gone after the killer alone and chased him to the top of the tower (from where he was thrown off and died), but considering the kind of situation it was, you can’t blame him for trying either.
Esteban Palacios
We should probably blame Esteban Palacios for all the other deaths as well. Had he not gotten carried away and done that awful thing in the past, none of this would have happened, and people like Alvaro could have lived longer. Instead, he went and did what he did and then brought on security head Jose to do the cover-up job. That saved him for three more decades, but ultimately, he had to pay for his sins. His wife refusing to save him in the end and letting him fall pray to the Curro killer is exactly the kind of fate Palacios deserved, I suppose.
Fernando Victoria
Fernando Victoria is probably worse than Palacios. Sure, back in 1992, he didn’t have much of a say. He didn’t even participate in the whole Curro mask-wearing and partying thing. But he was still part of the cover-up and went on with his life after that. Only when he went bankrupt did the idea of making Victor take revenge (and helping him) come to him. That was also because of a stroke of luck when he saw Rosa (a woman he never noticed all this time) and followed her. Trying to convince Victor that the other four were responsible and not him was quite the cunning move. I also don’t think he told Victor anything about his plan to get the money out of Palacios. So in the end, he got what he always deserved—death by fire at the hands of the Curro killer.
Victor aka The Curro Killer
Had Victor not died, he would have ended up in jail. What happened to him is absolutely terrible, but the law wouldn’t have given him a pass, as he is also responsible for the murder of a lot of people, some of whom were actually innocent—like Alvaro. So the best possible ending Victor could possibly have was a death, hopefully a painless one. Although I’m not sure if he had any sensation of pain, as he lived most of his life as a burn victim. Dying in the hands of Amparo—although she just shot his flamethrower’s tank and the explosion kills himself—is also kind of justified because Victor is responsible for her husband’s death.
Other deaths
There are also some deaths in 1992, like security guy Jose, who dies of cancer, which happens much before the present timeline of the show. We also get to see Richi’s accident, which happens due to his drunk driving—killing his daughter and wife.
